Working in ER this past week: We had four heat injuries each day for two days straight. Four of these were French Bulldogs, which happens to be the most common US breed these days. The others were three Rottweilers (brachycephalic by exam) and one Pit X.

Only ONE survived. NOT a Frenchie. Not a brachycepahlix breed. The Pit X.

Why? He happened to be playing in a pond. He ran and played with kids on land and then in the shallow pond water in 95 F 85% humidity weather until he collapsed. The humidity at his breathing level was probably a lot more, since it was approx 12 inches above water level.

They recognized a problem and brought him in… from one hour away.

On arrival
he was HYPOTHERMIC. Low body temp. Typical of heat injury. We warmed him up, treated his other abnormalities and within a
few hours he waa normal. Like NORMAL. No kidney failure. No coagulopahty. NO PROBLEMS.

Why is this? Probably because this dog reached critical heat injury when he happened to be in the best environement for treatment… IMMEDIATE cooling in water that was colder than him.

RAPID cooling with the coldest source available is what saves dogs with heat injury.

It’s time ro let go of the old wive’s tales of how ice water causes vasoconstriction or that rapid cooling is bad. HEAT is what causes death in heat inrjury, not the coolong method.

Remember their hearing is 4x better than ours so this can be a very scary time for them. Keep your babies safe this 4th of July season. 🎇🐶🇺🇸🐱

Let's talk about this photo. It's cute, except it's not. I see a dog who cannot get up without telling the child to get off. How do you think a dog is going to do that?

The 7 Golden Toddler Dog Rules:
#1: If a dog walks away from you, you DO NOT FOLLOW.
#2: Always leave room for the dog to walk away from you.
---that right there is 90+% of dog bites eliminated---
#3: We do not climb on the dog.
#4: We do not grab or pull on the dog.
#5: We do not hit or throw anything at the dog.
#6: We do not touch the dog's food.
#7: We do not go into the dog's kennel.

I promise these are not overly difficult concepts for littles, nor will they rob a kid of their bond with the family dog. It will deepen that bond, while keeping everyone safe.

"Oh, it looks like Moose is walking away from you. She is saying she wants a break. Let's play with this instead!"

"It's Moose's dinner time! Let's give her space to enjoy her yummies."

"That is Moose's room(kennel) and only she is allowed to go in there."

"If Moose wanted a break, could she walk away from you right now? No she really couldn't. Let's move away from the play house. You can keep playing but now she can leave when she wants a break."

In conclusion, ***parent your child or your dog will do it for you, and you will not like how they do it.***

I feel so bad 2 years in the shelter. I wish I could take them all.

Look at these beautiful faces. They just don’t understand why they don’t have anyone interested in adopting them. They’re looking at me for an explanation, and I don’t have one. They’re very special! Bogey Is about 4 1/2 years old and Beacall is 9. found on the side of the road in the early hours of the morning on May 15, 2022. Can’t believe they’ve been here for over two years! They are very bonded. They absolutely love each other. Snuggle at night with each other play nicely together, but they do not like other dogs. If they could be separated, they would’ve been adopted long ago, but we cannot separate them. Please help us find the home they deserve. You can visit with them and all the other dogs between 10 o’clock and up until 3 o’clock seven days a week. 68 Old Rte. six, Carmel , New York.

You never think your pups will out live you, but unfortunately in the case of Breezy & Pearl it’s true. After suffering the loss of their one and only human these girls were left homeless. They were literally denied from shelters stating they were too old and rescues told them they would be ineligible for adoption, so not worth the placement. These girls went from being the love of someone’s life, to being told they were better dead than alive.

It’s true Breezy and Pearl are old, they are 12 & 14, but we are adamant believers in helping seniors. These boxer girls have spent their whole life together and right now each other is all they have. They are well tempered, well mannered pups that can coexist with other canines. Both have lived with children and are extra sweet with them. Breezy seems to be losing her sight and her ears can be a bit tender, but at 14 years old that’s not too uncommon. We are hoping to find a place for them to stay before the family has to euthanize. These girls really do deserve to enjoy their golden years comfy without worry. If you can help Breezy & Pearl email [email protected] today!
