STORY AT-A-GLANCE
The purpose of using a leash to walk a dog is to keep the animal safe and under the owner's control, and retractable leashes often do the opposite
On a retractable leash, your dog can get far enough away from you to either get into trouble or into harm's way; in addition, retractable leashes are responsible for many injuries to both dogs and dog walkers
The very nature of retractable leashes trains dogs to pull on the leash to extend the lead
The most important thing you can do to set the stage for a lifetime of enjoyable walks is to help your canine family member learn to be the perfect walking partner
Dogs who are enjoyable to walk with have learned that loose leads are good, taut leads are not, and pulling against the lead is pointless

One of the most common mistakes a pet owner can make is choosing to own a breed based strictly on their physical appearance. This can often lead to conflict with an unhappy pet owner and a dog who may be at risk of losing their home.

While we know that each dog is an individual and there can be exceptions to the rule, we must understand that each breed has a certain amount of genetic DNA that gives each breed particular traits. These traits cannot be 'trained away' and instead must be understood BEFORE you decide on the breed best suited for you, your family, and your home.

Be sure to do proper research not only of the group, but also the specific breed you are interested in. Speak with reputable breeders who understand their breed and promote sound conformation, but temperament of the breed as well.

It may be that the breed you initially thought you wanted isn't a good fit for you. That's okay. Keep searching. Your breed is out there and waiting!

As you enjoy the summer temps, please do right by the best friend who depends on you the most. Remember: a pet in a parked car, even with the windows open, can quickly overheat and die on a warm day.

If you see an animal in distress in someone’s car, call 911 immediately and try to find the owner. If you cannot find the owner immediately, and you are still waiting for first responders and the animal seems to be in grave condition, state law allows you to break the car window or make entry to save the pet’s life. ❤
