I will still be available by phone/email/social media/carrier pigeon/smoke signal for consults, radiograph review, scheduling appointments, or whatever else doesn't require me to physically be at your stable. This is a great blog and video for anyone who works with horses. The naughty or rank or grumpy horses often have a good reason for their behavior. Learn the signs and we can find and fix the issue early!

Hurricane Information
Basic guidelines for storm preparedness are available here: https://thehorse.com/119357/hurricane-preparation-tips-for-horse-owners/

If you are more than an hour, or roughly 30 miles, from the coast the need to evacuate is less, unless it is a Cat 3 storm or higher. Typically by the time the storm makes it an hour inland the intensity is significantly less. However, if your home/stabling is not hurricane rated, does not have hurricane strapping on the roof, or is not able to be enclosed you should consider evacuating if hurricane force winds are forecasted for your area regardless of how far inland you are. Also, if your location floods after heavy thunderstorms or you are close to a large body of water you will likely have heavy flooding. If your facilities are not built above floodplain or standing water even comes close to them you should evacuate.
Walk around your farms and look at what is sitting around outside. If one person can move it, a hurricane can throw it. Loose lumbar, piles of brush, shovels, buckets, planters, chairs etc. can all go flying.

Evacuation Locations:
Most facilities owned or managed by the state of Florida will take evacuees but it is situationally dependent. The state fairgrounds in Tampa, the Alachua County Ag and Equestrian Center in Gainesville, and the Jacksonville Equestrian Center have taken evacuees in the past but you will need to call for availability and to reserve stalls. Private facilities and race tracks will also take evacuees sometimes, and most will post on social media if they are.

Make sure you have proof of ownership, identifying information for your animals, and Coggins tests. When evacuation orders are issued, the state typically waves the health certificate and Coggins regulations to leave the state, BUT your evacuation site will likely still require them. If you don't have them or they are expired it is up to the individual facility to allow your horse there or not.
Areas likely to be evacuated are mapped out here: https://www.floridadisaster.org/planprepare/disaster-preparedness-maps/
Florida Division of Emergency Management and Florida Department of Agriculture & Consumer Services post updates on storm conditions and evacuations.
https://spaghettimodels.com/ has all the forecasting maps and images in one location.

Please remember and understand, that once tropical storm force winds reach your area the majority of emergency services stop traveling out. If you or your horses get in trouble during the height of the storm you will be on your own until winds subside and it is safe to travel again!!

Hurricane season can be scary, BUT we have advance warning and time to prepare so don't panic. If it is your first one, use your neighbors and local emergency management offices to help you prepare.
And remember, if you go to the store and all the beer is gone it's probably not going to be that bad. If all the water and bread is gone (and the beer) then it is definitely time to pay attention!

There are several suspected botulism cases in horses in Central Florida. Some are currently being treated at the University of Florida. Fast testing is available to identify botulinum toxin, but confirmatory testing from water, feed, hay, or pasture sources can take up to two weeks because the clostridium bacteria itself must be grown and tested in the lab. Samples have been sent to multiple labs throughout the state and country.

Symptoms of botulism in horses include sudden death, weakness, muscle tremors, depression, and mild colic. If your horse exhibits these symptoms please let your veterinarian know. If you have a horse that has died suddenly in the past week or after exhibiting abnormal behavior please contact your veterinarian to submit samples for testing.

Multiple veterinary product distributors and biologics manufacturers are sourcing hyperimmune plasma and shipping to Florida to hasten treatment on horses with probable exposure. A vaccine is available for horses in high risk areas. Your veterinarian should let you know if you are in a high risk area. Feeding off round bales or large compressed bales also increases the risk of botulism, but it is relatively rare. Botulism from hay bales usually comes from a dead animal inadvertently being pulled into the baler, affecting a small number of bales. Widespread outbreaks are very uncommon. This typically does not happen with small bales. However, if you find something dead in a bale throw out the whole bale!

If you are not in a high risk area or you have not been advised to vaccinate your horse for botulism please do not start purchasing it online. We definitely do not want to start more product shortages, ala the COVID toilet paper debacle.

Updates on testing results and cases are being provided by Larsen Hay and University of Florida College of Veterinary Medicine.

The large animal internal medicine and emergency and critical care personnel at UF are probably very busy, tired, and hungry. If you're feeling generous, gift cards for various food delivery services and coffee companies would probably be appreciated.

It is stupidly cold for Florida, and your horse may not want to drink cold water. This means dehydration and sometimes impaction colic! Try to keep your horses drinking by mixing some lukewarm water with their feed, or hang some buckets with dilute Gatorade powder, Hydration Hay, molasses or applesauce water. Always have plain fresh water available to.
