Vaccinate, please!!
The Nancy J. Brua Animal Care Center has seen a rise in reported cases of parvo and distemper in Sierra Vista and urges residents to take advantage of free vaccinations for puppies ages 9 months and younger.
To be vaccinated at the shelter, puppies must be healthy and not showing any symptoms like trembling, eye discharge, coughing, lethargy, reduced appetite, diarrhea, or vomiting. No appointments are needed to participate in the shelter’s puppy parvo prevention program.
Recently, the shelter has received numerous strays that test positive for distemper or parvo. Owners have also reported sick dogs to the shelter. The shelter takes precautions to prevent an outbreak of any illnesses at the shelter but urges community members to act to ensure their pets are protected too.
“Both canine parvo and distemper are highly contagious diseases that can be life-threatening, and the most effective protection is through vaccination when they are healthy,” Sierra Vista Animal Control Supervisor Arleen Garcia says. “Please do not take sick dogs to the shelter or anywhere they may contact other dogs. If your dog is sick or is an adult that has not been vaccinated yet, contact a veterinarian.”
The Nancy J. Brua Animal Care Center is open Tuesday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. To contact the shelter, call (520) 458-4151.
