This picture is PJ in 2013. I remember the day clearly because I was just trying to get a nice photograph of the ponies and PJ was wild. He kept running up and taunting me and then sprinting away across the field, bucking and playing, and getting everybody all riled up.

The first time I saw this pony I had gone to look at another one, PJ stuck his head out of his stall as I walked by, and I was a goner. He had absolutely the cutest face I have ever seen. It’s still true. Don’t tell the others.

It didn’t take long after PJ arrived at Katydid for me to realize that this was by far the smartest pony I had ever met. And he had this way about him. He would watch me from his stall at feeding time and I would find myself explaining to him, out loud, why I had decided to do this or that around the barn. I had to finally tell myself that I was a grown woman and I didn’t need to justify my choices to this pony who had just arrived, but somehow I felt that I did.
We soon learned that there wasn’t a latch, bolt, chain, snap, or door that PJ couldn’t figure out how to escape from. He was devious, and clever, and so cute that it was always a surprise how naughty he could be.

We had to say goodbye to PJ today and as I was looking through photos of him to post on here I realized that photos of PJ are really a history of the farm. In almost every one he is surrounded by children- at shows, at home, in costume, with ribbons, ba****ck, in the snow, with campers. Groups of kids who are grown up now, some who aren’t yet. During his life he taught many, many people to ride. He leased his own girls, he had his pony pals, he was with us for a very long time. I have so many memories of the crazy things he did that made us laugh, which was frequent, and of what an unflappable guy he could be when everyone else in the ring was going crazy. He really was special in every way.

What I am really going to miss about PJ more than anything are those days in the late fall when he was up in the ring for a lesson in the afternoon, and the sun was already low in the sky to the west. Every time PJ would pass by the top of the ring with the sun behind him, his amazing blond tail would light up like it was on fire and I would run for my camera to try to capture this amazing unreal sight. His tail had a particular swing to it and with the sun behind him he just glowed. So I am going to choose to believe that wherever PJ has escaped to, he is cantering along in front of a setting sun with his incredible meteor shower of a tail streaming behind him surrounded by the love of everyone he knows. Which is pretty much how he lived while he was here.
