Always crate your dog immediately when you first suspect a back problem (shivering/trembling, yelping, reluctant to move, arched back, head held high or low, wobbly walk) and get him to a vet asap. Read our FAQS Important things to know https://dodgerslist.com/2020/02/24/emergency-faq

One in four dachshunds may have a disc herniation. Many other breeds are also experiencing IVDD. Every day we see in other pages and groups stories about dogs going down. But we can't be on every page or group all day. We NEED YOUR HELP!
Keep an eye out for posts of people who need help. Send them our web site, Dodgerslist.com
and tell them to join here for more daily information.
YOU could be someone's hero, YOU could save a dog's life!

Sadly, we're learning of more and more breeds (and mixes) that are prone to IVDD. This condition is by no means Dachshund exclusive. Please share and tell all your friends and on other FB groups about Dodgerslist. Especially those with IVDD prone breeds. You could help save a dog's life.

What is Neuropathy??? Neuropathy is pain which presents when damage has occurred to the nervous system. The damage may be caused by many things but when IVDD is involved, it is caused by damage to the nerves due to trauma to the spinal cord from the ruptured intervertebral disc. This pain can come in the form of tingling, a pins-and-needles sensation, and even be a burning, searing electrical-like sensation which is extremely painful. Even paralyzed dogs can feel the pain of neuropathy. Many times, the pain can be so severe that the dog will self-mutilate themselves in an attempt to relieve the pain. Initial signs of neuropathy can be excessive licking of a paw, leg, ge***al area, rear end, and the tail. Excessive licking can escalate to chewing and gnawing on the painful area and then self-mutilation which can be fatal. If you even suspect your dog is starting to suffer from neuropathy, immediately put an e-collar (rolled up hand towel secured with duct tape will work) around the dog’s neck and contact your vet. There are meds that could help.

Nerve healing can take time. It is only the dog and mother nature who will reveal how long that might be. First order of business is to get the disc healed. It a good thing to know your IVDD ahead of time, Read the Dodgerslist 10 minute on-line Shortcut Thru IVDD: https://dodgerslist.com/2020/02/24/presentations/

Good advice.

There are several meds used to treat IVDD https://dodgerslist.com/meds-used-during-disc-episode Tell us what meds your vet chose to treat your IVDD dog and remember not all drugs are right for every affected dog. Work with your veterinarian to tinker and determine the best drug, dose, and schedule for your own dog.

If you read nothing else, please read our e-presentation Shortcut through IVDD https://dodgerslist.com/2020/02/24/presentations so you will be prepared if IVDD should happen to your dog. PTS is something you can't undo so give them that chance to heal. What does that hurt????

You and your dog have survived - Now What???? A dog coming off of 6 weeks post op or 8 weeks of conservative treatment crate rest needs to gradually build up muscles and stamina. https://dodgerslist.com/living-with-ivdd-tips

Did you know that these are some of the breeds that are prone to . This equals thousands and thousands of IVDD prone dogs, just in the USA. It also means that, sadly, IVDD is no longer a "rare" or "exceptional" disease. Vets WILL see it more and more often. Yet we're still hearing stories of owners whose vets are not up to date on IVDD treatment options, and sadly recommend PTS as the only option. If you have a breed other then a Dachshund, please repost on your breeds' pages and suggest they join us here on our page.

What trusting eyes our dogs have! Vets chose an anti-inflammatory during a disc episode to get painful swelling down in about 1-2 weeks. These powerhouse meds do wonders OR they can be dangerous. Vets who practice safe medicine and owners up to speed on medications make all the difference. Did you get all four right? Check your work here: https://dodgerslist.com/2020/04/18/steroids-vs-nsaids

Owners need quick knowledge about the two treatments options available for a disc episode – Surgery or Meds+Rest. Good communication, understanding and decision making with a vet leads to the best outcome for a furry friend. Compare conservative and surgery treatments. https://dodgerslist.com/2020/02/10/surgery-vs-conservative

Strict rest protects the healing disc and spinal cord! Tell your pup all is going to be ok, because it will be! Disc disease (IVDD) does not mean a death sentence. Don’t make any decisions you cannot reverse!

My doxies love plastic bottles for the noise.
Its hard to find toys now that we can put empty bottles in.
I came across this DIY and thought I would try it. Always have socks missing a mate.
This says smash the bottle but I am going to try not smashing.

2. Use an empty water bottle inside a sock.

This DIY dog toy is as unlimited as your imagination. All you need is an empty plastic water bottle and a long tube sock. Thinner socks work better if you want to do a lot of little knots. For the best results, use dress socks instead of athletic socks. Although, depending on your dog, you may want the added challenge of a thicker sock. Your call!

Salvage a plastic water bottle and then walk over to your mismatched sock pile, drawer, or basket — we all have one! Smash the bottle and shove it into the sock. Create knots to keep the plastic bottle inside but also as added bulk for your dog to chew.

An informed owner is a dog's best friend.
cRATe rEsT - CRATE REST - Crate Rest
cRATe rEsT - CRATE REST - Crate Rest
The #1 single most important treatment you can give is crate rest 24/7.
After surgery - 6 weeks
With conservative treatment - 8 weeks
There are too many relapses without the proper crate rest. If your dog is on meds, they mask pain causing the dog to overdo and reinjure the ruptured disc.
Tough love is a must! Diligent crate rest is key to recovery.
For more information on how to do crate rest: https://dodgerslist.com/2020/05/14/strict-rest-recovery-process

Lilo would like to remind you that if your dog is healing from a disc herniation and something seems off (refuses to eat or drink, vomits, the dog is lethargic, etc) to NEVER "wait it out". Call the vet immediately and discuss it, especially if the dog is taking NSAIDs or Steroids.
