Lord Trooper has been my best and most faithful furry friend for all of these years. He has been a shining example of loyalty and affection for six incredible years. Wishing him a pawsitively wonderful birthday!

A friend recently asked me, “What in the world happened to you? You lost a whole person!” I have had too many people to count ask me about this same thing. Even patients of mine (when I walk into my exam rooms at work) have asked, “Are you ok? Where is my Doctor?” I laugh and say, “He got tired of being unhealthy and how could I give medical advice on health and be so unhealthy myself?”

Back story:

I did 25 years in the US Army. I was on a diet for 25 years while on active duty status. I got lazy and tired of physical training (working out), dieting and caring about my weight (like a lot of people) and let myself go. I went from 225 in 2008 (in the Army) to 245 lbs in 2010, then to 260 in 2011. I got a divorce in early 2012 and then ballooned to 300 lbs by 2013. This (and other things) made me decide to retire from the Army (a job I loved).

I was fortunate enough to get a second chance at love and happiness in late 2013. I met the prettiest girl in the world and she saw, the best parts of me. I was married to the woman of my dreams, Linda Del Grego later that year in 2014. I gained another 25 lbs over that next 10 years. At 325 lbs, I was on having daily joint pain, was on daily medications for joint pain and multiple other issues. I was on nsaids, cholesterol, blood pressure and indigestion medication every single day. I looked at myself in the mirror and I said, “Enough.” I had knee pain, hip pain, poor self esteem and was fearful of surgery about a possible joint replacement, secondary to “morbid obesity.” I was tired of being this version of myself.

The beginning of my journey: In August 2023, my wife, adult son and I joined a local wellness center and went on diets, were counseled on plans and decided to work together to get healthier. We all began intermediate fasting, changed our diets, started working out again and helped push each other to be healthier. My wife lost 30 lbs, my son has lost almost 70 lbs and I have lost over 90 lbs (so far). My wife has a trainer now and is maintaining her weight at 115 lbs. My son, Josh and I are still working every day on being better versions of ourselves. Every day is a struggle and every day, I now look at myself and say, “let’s do it.” I am now on a 1/2 dose of my antacid medication and have been able to stop my blood pressure medication. I have stopped my statin drug for cholesterol. I currently have no hip pain.

Life is better, but I am still on my journey. My goal weight is 20 lbs away. Fingers crossed. I will hit it by summer time. You can do anything with your family and friends supporting you. Thank you to all of you who believe in me and support me. For those of you who say, “I can’t do it.” Stop it! You can! Look at me. Now I have three sisters and my mother in law all working on their weight as well. They are all becoming more healthier and happier for it. Every day is a grind and can be a challenge, but are doable if you just believe in yourself. Feed your inner beast. Be the dragon and do not give up.

I am heading to the gym.

Have a great Friday!
