If you guessed radiographs or x-rays on yesterday's What Is It Wednesday, you were correct! One of the best features of our mobile radiology system is its ability to work on even the smallest, strangest of companions! While we have to get creative on helping fish stay still, MVS is always up to the challenge! This particular fish was having some buoyancy issues, so Dr. Merkwan snapped a few radiographs to see if there were any irregularly located regions of air. Thankfully there weren't and he has made a full recovery! We see everything from koi to eels, so reach out if your favorite fish friend needs some assistance!

Guess who's back at the Sarpy County Fair!? Dr. Merkwan will be at the fair Tuesday and Wednesday (the 30th and 31st) which will limit our appointment availability for the week! We will still be responding to communications, but it may be limited as well, depending on where and what exactly Dr. Merkwan is handling at the fair! We can't wait to see what everyone has worked so hard for in the last year!

Happy 4th of July! MVS will be closed on the 4th and have limited availability on the 5th to allow our families to celebrate! We will also have limited availability on the 1st (Monday). Reach out this week if you are in need of assistance helping your pets stay calm and collected next week as the fireworks start! Also remember to keep pets inside, away from windows, and well supervised if they must be outside once fireworks start! We are happy to help however we can and wish you as much joy as this dog for the 4th of July!

We don't know them all, but we owe them all! MVS will be closed for Memorial Day to allow our families to both remember and celebrate those that made the ultimate sacrifice. We are closed on Sundays, but will reopen for normal business hours on Tuesday the 28th. We wish you and your families an enjoyable and meaningful Memorial Day!

Merkwan Veterinary Services' house-calls aren't just for exotic pets! We see everything from snakes to llamas to cockatoos but also dogs and cats, all from the comfort your own home! This reduces stress and anxiety related to veterinary visits both for patients and clients. We are able to provide routine examinations, health certificates, and vaccinations for more traditional pets along with all the services we use for our exotic patients such as mobile x-rays and ultrasound! Come see us next Sunday! We are absolutely thrilled to be back at the largest captive bred reptile show in the state! Dr. Merkwan will be available to do some limited exams on animals purchased at the expo (no outside animals are allowed) and we can't wait to see the familiar faces and new friends that these shows bring!

Happy Easter! While we are always happy to keep any and every animal healthy, we would like to remind everyone that chicks, ducklings, bunnies, and other adorable baby animals make terrible gifts for an unprepared family member. With chickens and ducks living up to 10 years, as well as rabbits living upwards of 12 years they are a much longer commitment than just putting them in an Easter basket! For those that are prepared though, let us know when your fine feathered and furred friends need a checkup!

Thanksgiving Hours:
In preparation for the Thanksgiving holiday, we will have some restricted hours so staff can spend time with their families! MVS will be closed on Thanksgiving day (November 23rd). We will have limited availability for house call appointments on Friday the 24th as well.
Since we see turkeys, chickens, and all their poultry relatives, we will be celebrating this week by posting interesting turkey facts! Stay tuned to learn about the wild counterparts of our Thanksgiving mascot!

The American Association of Fish Veterinarians only has about 300 members, so we are very fortunate to have Dr. Merkwan! Almost everything we can do to a land dwelling animal can be done to an aquatic species including (but not limited too) anesthesia, surgery, ultrasound, scoping procedures, and labwork. Did you know that it is the male seahorse that carries the eggs in a specialized pouch until they hatch? Unlike most species where the female is the primary caretaker of the babies or eggs, seahorse males take that role! Did you also know that Dr. Merkwan is a member of the American Association of Fish Veterinarians (AAFV)? Membership allows Dr. Merkwan to attend their annual conference this week in Springfield, MO. We will be closed on Friday, October 6th through Monday the 9th. We will have limited available appointments available on Tuesday the 10th. He will be returning with the most cutting-edge information on fish care, treatments, and diagnostics so reach out to MVS for your fishy friends care!

The largest and oldest captive-bred expo in Nebraksa also has a humongous variety of reptiles and amphibians including axolotls, ball pythons, and bearded dragon among a multitude of other species.
