Happy Earth Day! Here at MVS we will be planting our gardens, having a plant based meal, and walking our dogs to celebrate! Sure major things like planting trees, making a donation to environmental causes, starting a compost pile, or planting an entire butterfly garden are great, but even minor things make a difference! Go bug hunting or watch a nature show with your children! Clean up trash on your regular walking or biking route! Take a load of old towels and blankets to be reused at an animal shelter! We only get one earth so lets do what we can to protect it! What will you be doing today to celebrate?

With Easter quickly approaching, we wanted to take this time to remind our followers that bunnies, chicks, and ducklings are not great Easter gifts to unsuspecting families. We truly love all animals, but to an unprepared family member a pet can be a complicated thing. Countless animals are dumped in shelters or (even more cruelly) in the wild to fend for themselves after they grow out of their cute fluffy phases. Many of these animals will not have been properly cared for, leading to long term health issues down the road. Please do your research before purchasing any pet and know that we are always happy to help with enclosure set ups, feeding instructions, and everything in between!

Merkwan Veterinary Services will be closed on Thursday, April 10th and Friday, April 11th. Normal business hours will resume on April 12th! We have tried teaching Dr. Merkwan's dog to answer the phone while he is gone, but it hasn't gone very well!

Happy Lunar New Year! You may recall that this is a Snake year, a Wood snake year to be specific! The Wood Snake is said to be a symbol of mystery, intuition, and wisdom. The snake itself is said to represent healing and personal evolution, due to a snake's ability to shed its skin. This Pine Woods snake is native to the south-eastern US, and its cool fact is that it is rear-fanged while being venomous (only mildly, so not dangerous to humans). We will share some other cool species of snakes throughout the year to represent the year of the Snake! Have any you would like to know more about? Let us know!

Did you know that 2025 will be the year of the Wood Snake? While the Lunar New Year won't actually start until January 29th, we figured this Pine Woods Snake could start it off a little early! Not only are we excited about anything involving snakes, but a wood snake year is a time a progress and growth! We can't wait to see what 2025 has in store for MVS! We will be closed at 4pm on the 31st (New Years Eve) and remain closed on New Years day so our friends and family can usher in the new year. We will be back on the 2nd of January though! Do you have any fond MVS memories from 2024? We would LOVE to hear about them!

Dr. Merkwan is packing up his things and heading out of the state to check on some patients tomorrow (the 14th of December). We won't be able to see any Omaha-area patients for house calls or in clinic until he gets back on the 17th! Our usual contact information will still be checked, but cell service may be questionable depending on his exact location at the time!

On Monday, we asked if you knew why the turkey was a symbol of Thanksgiving. Well, in early accounts of the celebration, writers noted that turkeys were often hunted in autumn. That, coupled with the fact that they are unique to America and were very plentiful and tasty, helped them become the notable Thanksgiving symbol they are now. So notable, that Benjamin Franklin had even proposed that they be the national bird!
