Its that time of year again! The Sarpy County Fair! We will have limited appointments available on Tuesday (July 29th) and Dr. Merkwan will be at the fair all day on Wednesday (July 30th). We will be back to normal business hours on Thursday! Come support the Sarpy Cou ty Fair and maybe watch a tractor pull or a show while you are there!

Dr. Merkwan will be taking some time off around the 4th of July to spend time with his family. We will be closed July 3rd to the 6th. Normal business hours will resume on July 7th! Happy 4th of July!!!

Happy World Environment Day! Started in 1974, World Environment Day was created to raise awareness for a myriad of environmental issues. Ranging from global warming to marine pollution to wildlife crimes. With over 143 countries participating, the theme this year is . An estimated 11 million tones of plastic waste enter into aquatic ecosystems each year. So what can you do to help? Work hard to reduce, reuse, and recycle. Rethink single use plastics such as water bottles and switch to reusable options. Clean up plastic (and other waste) you find in your neighborhood or on your favorite trails. Lets all help to protect and preserve the world we are living in!

Merkwan Veterinary Services will be closed Wednesday, May 28 to Tuesday, June 3rd so Dr. Merkwan can enjoy some much needed time relaxing! Share a photo of your cutest critter so we can all admire them while he is away!

Happy Earth Day! Here at MVS we will be planting our gardens, having a plant based meal, and walking our dogs to celebrate! Sure major things like planting trees, making a donation to environmental causes, starting a compost pile, or planting an entire butterfly garden are great, but even minor things make a difference! Go bug hunting or watch a nature show with your children! Clean up trash on your regular walking or biking route! Take a load of old towels and blankets to be reused at an animal shelter! We only get one earth so lets do what we can to protect it! What will you be doing today to celebrate?

With Easter quickly approaching, we wanted to take this time to remind our followers that bunnies, chicks, and ducklings are not great Easter gifts to unsuspecting families. We truly love all animals, but to an unprepared family member a pet can be a complicated thing. Countless animals are dumped in shelters or (even more cruelly) in the wild to fend for themselves after they grow out of their cute fluffy phases. Many of these animals will not have been properly cared for, leading to long term health issues down the road. Please do your research before purchasing any pet and know that we are always happy to help with enclosure set ups, feeding instructions, and everything in between!

It is almost time for one of our favorite (biannual) events of the year! Since 1993, the Nebraska Reptile Breeders Expo has been bringing the absolute best, captive bred critters right here to Omaha! Come visit us on April 13th to meet some of our crew, win prizes, and maybe pick up some new family pets while you are there! We can't wait to see everyone!

Merkwan Veterinary Services will be closed on Thursday, April 10th and Friday, April 11th. Normal business hours will resume on April 12th! We have tried teaching Dr. Merkwan's dog to answer the phone while he is gone, but it hasn't gone very well!
