Dr. Merkwan is packing up his things and heading out of the state to check on some patients tomorrow (the 14th of December). We won't be able to see any Omaha-area patients for house calls or in clinic until he gets back on the 17th! Our usual contact information will still be checked, but cell service may be questionable depending on his exact location at the time!

On Monday, we asked if you knew why the turkey was a symbol of Thanksgiving. Well, in early accounts of the celebration, writers noted that turkeys were often hunted in autumn. That, coupled with the fact that they are unique to America and were very plentiful and tasty, helped them become the notable Thanksgiving symbol they are now. So notable, that Benjamin Franklin had even proposed that they be the national bird!

As a reminder, we are closed today and Black Friday, but will have limited house call availability on Saturday! We hope you have a very happy and filling Thanksgiving!

Happy Thanksgiving! To allow our staff to celebrate with their family and friends, MVS will be closed Thursday (the 28th) and Friday (the 29th). We will also have limited hours on Saturday, the 30th, for house calls only. In the meantime, do you know why the Turkey is used as a symbol of Thanksgiving?

Just a reminder that Dr. Merkwan will be out of the office from October 15th to October 22nd while he attends the AAFV annual conference! We will be back and ready to handle any and every pet's needs on October 24th!

It is World Mental Health Day today. The veterinary profession as a whole is facing a mental health crisis, with rates of a multitude of unhealthy coping mechanisms far exceeding the average for almost every other profession in the United States. While we at MVS strive to create a healthy environment for our employees both inside and outside of the office, not every veterinary employee is as lucky. So what can you do to help? Be kind to ALL of your veterinary staff with any and every interaction. Make yourself aware of the national prevention hotline of 988. Support NOMV (www.nomv.org), which is working hard to change the landscape of the veterinary profession with both veterinary and client outreach programs. NOMV is raising awareness for the mental health status of veterinary medicine while also researching ways to help.

Not One More Vet (NOMV) will transform the status of mental wellness within the profession so veterinary professionals can survive & thrive.

Dr. Merkwan will be out of the office from October 15th to October 22nd. He will be attending the AAFV (Association of Fish Veterinarians) Conference! Conferences such as this one allow Dr. Merkwan to stay up on the latest medications, techniques (such as the ultrasound in the photo), and medical advances. With this conference focusing on fish, we can't wait to see what exciting tips and tricks Dr. Merkwan will bring back with him!

It's Red Panda Day today! The Red Panda was discovered around 1825 and inhabits the Himalayas and South Western China. While unrelated to Giant Pandas (which are bears), their closest relatives are hotly debated with skunks and weasels or raccoons being the possible front runners. One of their coolest features? Their wrists are designed to rotate so they can move down a tree headfirst! They also have a pseudo-thumb which, combined with their special wrist, allows them to grasp bamboo while they feed!

Come see us this Sunday at the Nebraska Reptile Breeders Expo! One of our favorite stops of the year! Come see us and meet some of the best of the best local breeders! Even if you aren't ready to bring home a new critter this weekend, this expo is a great place to meet with multiple knowledgeable handlers and breeders and get more information on the species that interest you! As always, we will have equipment for brief exams, however no outside animals (besides service animals) are allowed! We can't wait to see all our old friends and make some new ones!
