Never put your hand in or near your puppy’s bowl to teach them not to bite you or guard their food. While they are eating drop a piece of meat or anything that is extra high value to them, in their bowl from above so they don’t even see your hand coming. Some pups will look up surprised at this marvel offering with joy.

Do this while they are young and they’ll never feel threatened by you coming near them while they eat or your hand. Don’t over do it. Maybe a couple of times a week till you see your pup isn’t phased by your approach. They just keep eating as if nothing is wrong. Then practice a couple of times a week until they are mature and you’ll never worry about resource guarding.

This is also a great idea to do with their toys. Trade up when you take a toy or pick up a ball. Give them another ball or toy when you take one away. You’re building a bond of trust by teaching both of these.

If your dog is already a resource guarded, don’t try this. A new and different approach is necessary and with a positive reinforcement trainer.
