Is your horse coughing or struggling to breathe? 😮‍💨 They could be dealing with RAO (Recurrent Airway Obstruction)— also known as equine asthma. This chronic respiratory condition is often triggered by dust, mold, and poor ventilation, especially in the summer when horses spend more time in stalls or dry conditions.

⚠️Common signs of RAO include: chronic coughing, nasal discharge, labored or noisy breathing, and poor performance.

🩺Managing RAO includes improving airflow, soaking hay, reducing dust, and in some cases, medication.

Horses that graze or eat off sandy ground will ingest the sand, which can build up in the colon and lead to colic.

⚠️ Prevention tips:
• Feed hay in tubs or off mats
• Avoid feeding directly on sandy ground
• Consider adding a sand clearance product to their diet

With the warm summer weather in full swing, it’s important to recognize the signs of overheating in horses before it becomes an emergency! ☀️🔥 Look out for excessive or no sweating, rapid breathing, excess fatigue, nostril flaring, failure to cool from normal excercise, elevated heart rate!
