Banamine® helps to reduce inflammation, thereby pain, and fever. Banamine® works to reduce inflammatory proteins, and by “blocking” those proteins the fever is reduced and pain is relieved.

Because Banamine® reduces fevers, we recommend taking your horse's temperature before administering it to determine your horse's current temperature.

Did you know?

There are certain times of the year when horses are MORE likely to be exposed to tick-borne diseases.

The life cycle of the tick demands that they “feed” during certain times of their growth cycle. These stages of the tick’s life coincide with the spring and fall months. If the outside temperature gets above freezing for 2-3 days, the ticks will emerge to seek out a blood meal. At this stage, these ticks are tiny, about the size of a pin’s head. It is almost impossible to find them until the horse has a large lump in reaction to the bite.

So, the key is PREVENTION!
The following tips will help to keep the ticks away from your horse OR discourage them from staying on your horse:
1. Ticks live in brush and low ground cover – so keeping a wide 4–6-foot swath cut down around the edge of the horse’s turnout area will keep the ticks out of the pasture.

2. The best topicals for tick prevention
a. Endure (works great for flies AND ticks)
b. Equi-spot
c. SWAT (works great for sensitive areas)

3. Remember to run your hands over your horse every day looking for ticks – paying special attention to the chest, the tailhead, under the mane, and the jaw.

Pasture Management 101

Your horse stares longingly at the green blades beckoning from the other side of the fence as spring grass pops up in the pasture, but the dietary change from hay to grass has a significant effect on your horse! Proper pasture management will prevent damage to your pasture, help prevent colic and laminitis in your horse.

Did you know?
Grass contains MUCH more sugar than hay. As a result, your horse needs to be slowly reintroduced to elevated levels of sugar. This allows your horse's body to slowly adapt and maintain a healthy glucose and insulin balance. Elevated sugar levels will elevate insulin levels which can cause laminitis and change the gut microbes causing colic.

To safely transition your horse onto pasture, limit your horse's turnout to only 10-15 minutes per day to begin and slowly increase turnout time over 4 weeks as shown in the chart below.

Why perform a health check before vaccination?

Horses, small ruminants & camelids can be very stoic and hide the fact that they are not feeling well. Its important that a health check be performed on every patient prior to receiving vaccinations, sedation, or other medications since vaccinating or medicating a sick animal can cause problems. This simple health check includes taking the patient's temperature, listening to the heart and lungs, an assessment of body condition, and a brief look at eyes and conjunctiva. As the owner, you should feel free to ask questions and discuss any concerns you may have during this time.

If the veterinarian deems that your animal is under the weather, further tests & treatment will be discussed at that time, and another appointment for vaccinations can be scheduled!

If you have not scheduled spring shots yet, please give the office a call @ 508-885-4205 or email us at [email protected] to set up an appointment!

Core vaccines protect against diseases that all horses are susceptible to, regardless of lifestyle or environment and include Rabies, Tetanus, and mosquito-borne diseases (EEE, WEE, & West Nile Virus).

Risk-based vaccines, such as Flu-Rhino & Strangles, protect against diseases horses may only be exposed to in certain environments or when engaging in certain activities like traveling, showing, breeding, etc.

Part of deciding which vaccines your horse needs is understanding his/her potential exposure and the requirements of where you are headed.

Make sure to call EquidDoc Veterinary Services (508-885-4205) or email [email protected] to schedule your spring vaccine appointment and discuss additional risk-based vaccines that should be considered for your horse!

🌷Spring is here! 🌷
That means it’s time for spring vaccine appointments to be made!
Spots are flying fast so be sure to get your appointment scheduled if you haven’t already!

Below are some tips to make everything go smoothly!

1. When scheduling let us know if you need anything other than vaccines, Coggins, and f***l testing before the appointment.
2. If your horse receives many vaccines, consider splitting them into 2 visits.
3. Have a manure sample ready for parasite testing (only need 1 tablespoon).
4. Be ready with Coggins info if it needs to be updated.
5. Have questions & concerns written down so you don't forget!
6. If interested in a "farm vaccine day" or to create a vaccine day with close neighbors, please call the office to set that up!

Donkeys have a stereotype of being stubborn, but they are intelligent and affectionate companions! Here are five interesting facts about donkeys.

1. Male donkeys are known as Jacks & female donkeys are known as Jennets.
2. Donkeys prefer to have companions.
3. Donkeys are not able to adjust their hair coat weight, hair length and width in response to colder, winter weather. They should always have access to a run-in shed or stall where they can shelter from the elements.
4. Barley straw and or late-cut grass hay that horse owners might not desire can be ideal for donkeys. Too much lush grass can cause weight gain and numerous health problems.
5. Recommended routine care for donkeys consists of annual vaccines, annual oral exam and dentistry, f***l parasite testing and hoof trimmings.

Need to schedule an appointment for your donkeys' annual vaccines, oral, and health exams? We can be reached Monday through Friday 8:30am-4:30pm (508-885-4025) or email us at [email protected].
