It broke our hearts to say goodbye to our own Hector this past weekend. When we first met him in 2011, when he was about a year old, everyone and everything and everywhere made him nervous. He was so shut down he was less a dog and more a raw, dysregulated nervous system. He panted continuously for the first 24 hours he spent with us. He wouldn’t walk through doorways. He tried to sink into the ground and disappear at the slightest provocation.
But slowly and steadily, with human help, and more profoundly, with the help of our other dogs, Hector transformed into a true Dog: a confident, playful, loving, dignified, wise teacher and healer of other animal spirits. We’ll miss you forever, Hector. You were truly one in a million.
