Never Forgotten Ranch is a 501(c)(3) animal welfare organization, providing lifelong sanctuary care to senior and special needs dogs in need, with a focus on (but not limitation to) dogs of livestock guardian breeds. Our little ranch is located in the beautiful forested Willapa Hills of coastal Washington state. Here, we offer a safe haven for dogs who have found themselves without a loving home d
ue to not "fitting in the box," so to say. They may have medical abnormalities or behavioral traits that make them difficult to place in adoptive homes, or may have found themselves facing the reality of spending their senior years alone in a shelter for no reason other than being old. All are special, all are wanted, and all are glorious in their own unique ways! Here, "special needs" dogs are free to be their own magnificent selves. Medical needs are met without hesitation, and without making the dog feel a burden. Behavioral needs are met naturally and organically, with the dogs free to tell us what they need and what lifestyle in which they can thrive. And that is exactly what we give them! Here, we love all the doggies for their own amazing doggie selves. We are simply doing our small part to help build a world where no dog is ever left behind, or forgotten. On this Throwback Thursday, we’re remembering our sweet Jazzy, who made her journey to the Rainbow Bridge two years ago. Sweet old Jazzy was afraid of nothing - not even the viscious roomba that sends most of the dogs running! Instead Jazzy would just lay down and cradle the little cleaning monster while she took a nap, keeping her less brave buddies happily safe. ❤️🤣

Generally Kane only does his wild yodel when dinner is not at the exact moment he declares it should be, but the first real wintry day of the season definitely got the big boy a-singing! The melodies this goofy giant can create are really like nothing we’ve heard come out of a dog before! And although he still joined us for a morning walk, he sure seemed to have some quite serious questions about why the ice had the nerve to land on his precious yard. Don’t worry, though, big guy. Your snuggly warm rug in front of the fire is always waiting for you. ❤️

According to our and our vet’s best estimate, and what we know of her history, Babe is probably around 18 years old. And that’s pretty darn up there in years for a dog of her breed mix and size! But this old gal just keeps on going, smiling her way over every hurdle life tosses at her. Before her stroke last fall, Babe started showing signs of doggie dementia. She would forget where she was going and what she was doing, but more concerningly she would forget she was eating, which led to the start of some very uncharacteristic weight loss. Yet since her stroke, she has in many ways come back to us! She now eats voraciously and joyously, has started the cutest little old lady style playtime hop, and seems to know exactly what she wants and where she’s going. The only lingering sign of the stroke is her tendency to walk a little crooked due to her head tilt, but even that is not as extreme as it initially was as she’s adapted amazingly. ❤️ Diamond & Toby ❤️ Both were once homeless, abandoned, sick, hungry and thirsty, scared and alone. Toby once spent his days on the harsh city streets, and Diamond once spent hers abandoned all alone far out in the desert. And once saved from those fates, both then spent their days on the hard floors of a cold concrete kennel, surrounded by fearful barks and cries. Neither did well in the municipal shelters they were taken to, as they struggled to be adopted because of their age and health, with the scary reality of “euthanasia for space” looming over their heads daily. Both of these old babies know exactly how hopelessness feels. But thankfully, both ultimately made their way here to the sanctuary where they rediscovered HOPE! They arrived just weeks apart, and bonded instantly. And quiet moments like this, when we see two pure old souls sharing a well-deserved moment of comfort and peace, reminds us exactly why we do what we do. Statistically, senior dogs, especially large breed senior dogs, have the hardest time getting adopted. But it is our belief that no dog should spend their final days in a shelter. No dog should be put down because they were “too old” or had “too many age-related issues” to find an adopter. About half of the dogs who live here at the sanctuary are seniors over ten years old. Every one of them found themselves homeless in their golden years, and for a variety of medical, behavioral, or other age-related reasons needing sanctuary or hospice care for their remaining days. And that’s what makes a senior sanctuary different - we’re not here to train these dogs into the perfect adoptable pets. We’re not here to teach them to be good dogs because they already are, no matter what. Because here, dogs just get to BE. They get spoiled and loved and get to be the absolute center of attention 24/7. Their care routines define ours, their needs come first, and their happiness is the top priority. They get the unconditional love and acceptance they need in order to thrive. We live in the forest, we hike and play in the trees, and rolling in the dirt is fun! And Great Pyrenees have self-cleaning coats, so no worries, right? Bwahahahaha! The self-cleaning coat thing is at best, subjective. While Pyrs do have double coats that include a top layer that often does shed dirt much better than some other breeds, certain Pyrs just seem to forget that and live their days as dirt and matt magnets. And Ranger is definitely one of those! But here at the sanctuary we believe in letting dogs live naturally and healthily as DOGS! And that means that they absolutely get to roll in the dirt to their little hearts’ content! Never Forgotten Ranch is a 501(c)(3) charitable nonprofit organization based out of Concord, Virginia, with foster, rescue, and adoption partners in Edgewood and Willard, New Mexico.
Our Mission
The mission of Never Forgotten Ranch is to serve three specific groups of animals who are at risk of being “forgotten” by humans who have failed them. First, Never Forgotten Ranch serves to rescue, rehabilitate, and rehome neglected and abused horses, with a focus on BLM and reservation mustangs. Additionally, Never Forgotten Ranch strives to assist in the growth of adoptions of the wild horses who have been removed from their homelands up by the Bureau of Land Management due to overpopulation and the resulting degradation of the range lands, and are now awaiting adoption in BLM holding pens, by gentling them, training them, and placing them in good homes. The Ranch also aims to educate others about the plight of these wild horses, their uncertain future as their population increases and the range lands can no longer sustain them, and the mustangs' unmatched strength, hardiness, intelligence, and dependability as faithful equine partners.
Second, Never Forgotten Ranch provides lifelong sanctuary care to a number of senior and special needs dogs. Each of these dogs came to the Ranch from a city or county shelter, after either finding themselves alone on the streets or surrendered by their "owners," usually during their golden years of life.
Third, Never Forgotten Ranch helps dogs of a variety of working farm breeds find homes in which they can thrive. At the forefront of this aspect of the Ranch's mission is our goal to help educate the public about the unique needs of working farm dog breeds, with a focus on livestock guardian breeds, the invaluable services they provide to the agricultural community and the joy they experience in doing so, and the critical importance of ensuring that dogs of these working breeds are placed only in home environments that meet their unique needs based on their genetic instincts. Never Forgotten Ranch serves to connect rural adopters living on ranches, farms, and small homesteads with livestock guardian and other working farm dogs looking for new positions, and occasionally puppies born of such working dogs. It is our goal to facilitate lifelong adoptions of working farm breed dogs, in the environments in which they thrive, therefore limiting the number of dogs of working farm breeds ending up at risk in shelters.
As part of this endeavor, the Ranch operates a livestock guardian rescue, rehabilitation, and adoption program serving dogs of livestock guardian breeds who have experienced failed adoptions in urban pet home settings that are inappropriate for the breed, or failed positions as livestock guardians, generally due to inadequate or improper training. These dogs are fully assessed for any existing behavioral challenges, re-trained accordingly, and then placed with responsible adopters who can provide the environment in which the individual dog can thrive, whether it be protecting the specific types of livestock with which he or she has proven successful, or living as a faithful family companion in a rural home setting.
Finally, Never Forgotten Ranch rescues dogs of numerous farm and working dog breeds, both purebred and mixes, who find themselves at risk of euthanasia at one of the many high-kill-rate city and county shelters. The dogs are all fully assessed for behavioral traits in order to place them in the best and most fitting adoptive homes possible. Never Forgotten Ranch does not place farm dog breeds in urban homes, since due to their unique instincts and genetic traits they generally do best in rural environments where they can have a "job" and a focus for their highly active minds. Even if this "job" is not working with livestock, we aim to place our dogs in homes situated in rural environments where their energy, personalities, protective instincts and sometimes vocal tendencies will not only be accepted but will be welcomed and appreciated.
*On occasion, we do bring in rescue dogs who may be suitable for an urban lifestyle. Such dogs will be listed separately at the bottom of our "Available Dogs" page, when and if they are available. Please be aware that even if a dog is listed as a potential candidate for an urban home, priority is always given to rural placements, in line with our organization's mission.
**All dogs adopted through Never Forgotten Ranch are fully examined by our trusted veterinarians, de-wormed, immunized, and spayed/neutered in accordance with the laws of both the State of New Mexico and the Commonwealth of Virginia.

Never Forgotten Ranch is based out of Concord, Virginia, with foster partners in central New Mexico. With volunteers travelling between these locations several times a year, Never Forgotten Ranch is able to rescue dogs and horses across a large portion of the country, as well as offering transport to adopters throughout our adoption area.
*Never Forgotten Ranch is a registered nonprofit charitable 501(c)(3) organization, EIN 84-2141190. However, due to our recent name change, which was made in response to our expansion from serving horses in need, to serving both horses and dogs in need, some IRS and State online records may still display our former name of “Cross Country Horse Rescue.” All sites are expected to be updated with the new name in early 2020.
