This is standard change for English Cocker Spaniels proposed and ratified by the members of the ECSCA. It has been reviewed and approved by AKC as well. The standard allows for docked and undocked tails. The information from the ECSCA Breeder Education details how the tail should be carried regardless if it is docked or not.

At this time, I have a personal preference to dock tails but completely support other breeders who choose to leave the tails undocked.

Docking is completed at 3 days of age or under.

We wish you a blessed Thanksgiving.

Treat Your Pet to a Safe Thanksgiving
Turkey, mashed potatoes, stuffing, pie … the list of delicious Thanksgiving food goes on. While you’re busy stuffing your face you may be tempted to give your pets some extra treats, but, there are a lot of dangers for your pet hiding in your Thanksgiving spread.

However, there are plenty of fall favorites that can be tasty (and safe) options for your dog or cat to share in small portions during holiday festivities.

Can I Share Thanksgiving Foods with My Pet?
There are a lot of foods in a typical Thanksgiving spread that are harmful to pets, but there are also many that are healthy for them.

While a few small boneless pieces of cooked turkey, a lick of mashed potato or even a nibble of pumpkin pie are all unlikely to cause a major problem, any type of overindulgence can result in an upset stomach, diarrhea or even pancreatitis.

Whether your pet gets into your feast or a family member sneaks them some table scraps, it’s important to know which foods are okay for them to eat and which may result in a trip to the emergency veterinarian’s office.

Dos and Don’ts: Thanksgiving Foods for Pets

Do: Turkey
Typically, it’s ok to give your pet lean proteins like chicken, salmon, and, you guessed it, turkey. However, you should only treat them to a small amount of white meat that is free of bones, fat, and skin. You should also make sure there’s no gravy, onions or spices, as some of those ingredients are toxic.

Don’t: Bones
While most images of dogs conjure up the classic pairing of a dog with a bone, bones can be incredibly dangerous for pets. Bones, especially cooked bones, can splinter and crack when chewed on, tearing up your pet’s mouth and stomach. Small bones and soup bones can also become choking hazards.

Do: Most Vegetables
There are a variety of veggies that are pet safe. If you’re looking to add a little color to your pet’s plate, broccoli, carrots, asparagus, celery, bell peppers, zucchini, green beans and cucumbers are all safe for pets to enjoy!

Don’t: Onions, Garlic, Chives, Scallions
Some of our favorite flavorful additions are toxic to pets. Onions, scallions, leeks, garlic and other similar vegetables are dangerous and should not be consumed.

Do: Most Fruits
Like vegetables, there are a lot of great options for pet-safe fruits. Treats like blueberries, peaches and cranberries are all safe for pets to snack on.

Don’t: Grapes and Raisins
Grapes and raisins are extremely dangerous for pets and you should never give your pet these foods. Unlike other fruits, they can cause kidney failure.

Do: Pumpkin
Pumpkin is fantastic for pets! It’s packed full of vitamins and is great for pets’ digestive tracts.

Don’t: Sweets
Most pet owners are already aware that chocolate is highly dangerous for animals, but there are other sinister sweets out there, too. Artificial sweeteners, particularly those containing Xylitol, are potentially lethal. In general, pets shouldn’t consume sugary snacks. Desserts containing macadamia nuts are also off the table, as these nuts can cause muscular weakness, disorientation, depression, tremors and abdominal pain.

Be Thankful for Health This Year
By educating yourself on the potential hazards of the holiday, you can ensure a safe and fun Thanksgiving for you and your furry companion. Even if their begging face tries to convince you that they’d be thankful for a sample of your plate, take precautions to keep your pet happy and healthy this fall.

But...I don't want: A " show dog"
HOW MUCH FOR A PUPPY?

(or……you can pay now or later, but you WILL pay)

Let me say a few words to you, yes you, the person who texts an email to just ask for the price. The person who calls and hears a price surprisingly says: ′′ I can buy a cheaper puppy somewhere else ". I'll talk to you too; the person who doesn't care about papers because I want ′′ just a pet ".

No dog is ′′ just a pet ".

Behind every purebred puppy / dog is a BREEDER. I use capital letters to distinguish a breeder from an animal factory or mill. A serious breeder does not breed dogs without documents that do not protect the integrity of the breed.

Registration (papers) are records of ancestry documenting the bloodline and enabling you to investigate possible health problems in your lineage.

When you tell a breeder you don't care about paper, tell them you don't care less about puppy health, you just want the cheapest thing you can find!

If you choose to buy a puppy from a reputable and quality breeder, this breeder is responsible for every puppy's health.

This breeder will skip vacation, miss sleep, and most of his personal home space has been transformed into space for his dogs. The truly passionate breeder, who loves what he breeds, puts all his life's blood into it. Not only for puppies that are sold, but also for every customer who owns a piece of their heart and is now a member of their large family. This does not take into account puppies / dogs that may be getting sick or need extra help to thrive. Breeders worry about their babies after leaving and take them back without question.

A breeder will get his hands dirty, often covered in everything that comes with birth. Because that's what life is all about... in the midst of birth and death is life. The wheel that keeps spinning. A breeder conducts tests, echoes, x-rays, analytics, emergency C cuts, vaccinations, registration throws, research pedigrees, deworming and microchips of his puppies and has them examined by specialists.

Last but not least, a breeder CHOOSES for the family who is lucky enough to have one of their puppies. Yes, you read correctly. A real breeder chooses who he sells to because he doesn't make money selling. There is no compensation that can offset the investment a breeder has made, so they must be able to rely on it to be the right choice. Often more than saying yes...

A good breeder has other criteria for those who want to continue his bloodline, why? Since breeding isn't a responsibility to take lightly, it's a lifestyle choice reserved ONLY for the few devoted people willing to sacrifice.

Since a dog is never ′′ just a pet!!! he is the legacy of the breeder, a little boy's best friend, a protector of a little girl, therapy for elderly, a member of the family, someone's whole world!!!

Worth sharing with so much truth in this article. Responsible breeding and possession of several dogs is a lifestyle and commitment many cannot understand.

7 days a week and 365 days a year our lives revolve around the dogs.

About Horizons English Cockers

Why Horizons?

A “horizon” is line at which the earth's surface and the sky appear to meet. It is for me about dreams and direction that keeps me focused on my goals. A “Horizon” is a beautiful site to behold in at any time of the day but particularly in the morning or evening. My dogs are are a joy to watch both at play or in the ring but also sweet tempered and merry.

As a fancier of the breed, I am focused on on temperament, health, and adherence to the breed standard set forth by the English Cocker Spaniel Club of America.

Our dogs are also proudly part of the wonderful Golden Gait English Cocker Spaniel family. Enjoy this page, which contains information about the Horizons boys and girls as well as the Golden Gait dogs that I have owned over the years.
