Using body language to communicate with dogs
Words have value! When you constantly repeat yourself, your words lose value. So, how do we hold our dogs accountable for listening to our verbal command if we should only say it ONCE? Use movement. Dogs read body language. Make yours confident. Just a few steps back from a distraction--in Bella's case, she was focused on another dog--can break the tunnel vision and have your dog turn back to you and "check-in."

NJ cold, snow and ice keeping you inside? Call your trainer! There's plenty to do on a winter's afternoon. #puppylife #makethemwork #k9learningacademy #pjday
Basic obedience "final exam" and Yalla nailed it! Very engaged with her handler (her mom!) When she did get distracted it only took a moment to refocus. Mom's body language was relaxed, which makes a world of difference since dog's "read the room." If we are relaxed it gives our dog space to focus. If we are nervous and uptight, it puts them on alert. Give YOURSELF grace as you learn how to communicate with your dog. Once you build confidence in your abilities, it will transfer to your dog. #mirrorimage #basicobedience #positivedogtraining #k9learningacademy #lifecoaching

Intermediate training adds difficulty. Here our trainer Erica circles the dog outside (higher distraction than inside) while construction is occurring on the other side of the road (added noise/visual distraction) and has him break right to her (recall and focus in spite of distractions.) Rewards in the form of treats are great at building habits. Additionally, verbal/tactile rewards and the reward of freedom (the break/release itself) all level up basic obedience to an intermediate level of work. #thejoysofaworkingdog #boom #yes #goodboy #k9learningacademy
