🌟 A Day in the Life on the Homestead 🌟

New blog post is up! Today, I’m sharing a raw glimpse into what life looks like for me right now navigating the challenges of homesteading, motherhood, and disability. It’s not sugar-coated or picture-perfect, but it’s honest. From folding laundry (ugh, my least favorite chore) to painting rainbow carrots, to making dinner with my husband’s help, it’s a story of adapting, embracing the mess, and finding joy in the small victories.

💛 And as a little bonus, I’ve included the recipe for my favorite Honey-Glazed Carrots, a simple, delicious side dish that’s always a hit at the dinner table.
Thank you for following along on this journey. Your support means the world to me as I continue to share my story, one day at a time. ❤️

Ham and beans is hands down my favorite way to use up the last of a ham and the ham bone. There’s something so satisfying about making the most of an animal, ensuring nothing goes to waste, and turning it into a nourishing, hearty meal for the family—especially on a cold day! ❄️✨⁣

Here’s how I make it:⁣
👉 Soak 2 lbs of pinto beans in hot water for an hour (or overnight), then rinse⁣
👉 Add 8 cups of bone broth to the crockpot⁣
👉 Toss in a whole onion (peeled and chopped)⁣
👉 Add the leftover ham bone with meat still attached⁣
👉 Season with thyme, salt, pepper, and a generous helping of chopped garlic⁣ (or whatever your heart calls)
👉 Cook on low for 8 hours and let the magic happen⁣

The result? A warm, flavorful pot of comfort that’s packed with nutrients and love. This simple recipe is a staple here at the homestead, and I hope it brings as much joy to your table as it does to ours! 💛⁣

Whether you’re on 50 acres or in an apartment, homesteading is a mindset, a way of life. This view from my kitchen window reminds me there’s no time like now to pause and appreciate the beauty of nature.

The Oklahoma sunset shining through the trees paints the most stunning picture—a daily reminder that home is wherever we choose to cultivate grace, gratitude, and connection to the land, no matter its size.

Did you know your cookware could be leaching harmful chemicals into your food? Nonstick pans, aluminum pots, and plastic utensils can release toxins like PFAS and heavy metals linked to health issues.

Enter cast iron: a non-toxic, durable, and sustainable alternative. Here’s why it’s a game-changer:
✔️ No harmful chemicals – Just pure, natural iron.
✔️ Lasts generations – No need to replace it.
✔️ Versatile – Use on stovetops, in ovens, or over campfires.
✔️ Boosts iron intake – Great for health!

Swap toxic cookware for cast iron and cook with confidence! 🌱

When you’re battling chronic illness, it’s not a “mind over matter” thing. I can push through the pain. I can ignore the signs my body is screaming at me to stop—just like the military taught me. But you know where that gets me? Danger. My body completely revolts, and the symptoms flare.

I’m unlearning survival mechanisms I once relied on, and let me tell you, it’s one of the hardest things I’ve ever done. It’s a daily struggle to replace that old mindset with one that honors my body’s limits.

Some days, I sit in tears—not because I’m battling dreams—but because I’m battling basic tasks like washing my hair, putting on shoes, or even just walking. It’s incredibly humbling.

I am so grateful for my husband, who steps in when I struggle to listen to my body, and for my service dog, who can sense the danger before I can. She alerts and me, giving us the chance to stop down before my body shuts down.

This journey isn’t easy, but I’m learning that true strength isn’t pushing through—it’s knowing when to pause. - 💚 Ally

🚨 Live Chick & Shipping Prices Are Going Up—And I’m not mad!

Starting January 19, 2025, USPS is slapping on a $15 fee for shipping live animals, bumping priority mail costs by 3.2%, and keeping their $0.20/lb air shipping fee for day-old poultry. Prices are climbing, but let’s be honest—does any of this improve the safety or well-being of live birds in transit? Absolutely not.

You don’t need acres of land to embrace the homesteading lifestyle! Homesteading is all about doing what you can, where you are, and choosing homemade over store-bought. Be brave, try new things, and celebrate each small victory. Here’s how you can start right at home:

🍞 Bake Your Own Bread – Fresh, delicious, and free of additives!
🧺 Make Your Own Laundry Soap – Simple, non-toxic, and budget-friendly.
🥒 Ferment Veggies – Think pickles, sauerkraut, or kimchi.
🧈 Churn Butter – Or make it in a jar with heavy cream and a pinch of salt!
🧶 Learn a Craft – Crochet, knit, or sew useful items for your home.
☕️ DIY Coffee Creamer – Skip the chemicals and whip up your own.
🕯 Make Candles – Perfect for cozy evenings or emergency prep.
🧼 Craft Soap – Gentle on skin, good for gifts, and eco-friendly.
🪴 Grow Herbs Indoors – Fresh basil, mint, or rosemary on your windowsill!
🐓 Support Local Farmers – Buy eggs, milk, and produce directly from them.
🛠 Fix and Mend – Learn to repair clothes, tools, and household items.
🧄 Try Sprouting – Grow sprouts for salads and sandwiches right on your countertop!
💡 Learn Food Preservation – Dehydrate fruits, make freezer meals, or try water-bath canning.
📚 Read and Research – Study gardening, herbal medicine, or sustainable living.

Remember, you don’t have to do it all—just pick what excites you most. Little by little, these skills build confidence and resilience. 🌟

New Year’s Eve, I started a pot of nourishing bone broth with local, grass-fed soup bones, seasoned with healing aromatics like ginger, anise, cardamom, cloves, cinnamon, coriander, and onions. The rich aroma filled our home with warmth and comfort.

Today, we slow-cooked a brisket in that broth while we embraced a day of quiet intention—painting, napping, reading books, playing, and simply being together as a family.

This is the kind of new year I want to welcome: intentional, healing, and family-centered. 🌿✨

Here’s to carrying that energy forward in 2025. What’s your vision for the year ahead?
