Potty Training Puppies 101!
The most important thing to stick to is the Schedule, Schedule, Schedule. Habiy is the only
way a pup can actually learn. Potty training is a very important part of rehoming your puppy, and it can be tricky. We want to provide you with the tools you need. One thing to keep in mind is if there are any
accidents, it’s not because something is wrong with the puppy. And it will always get better over time! Here are some tips and tricks to have a smoother process of housebreaking:
1. SCHEDULE
● Controlling your dog’s diet. Feed only at specified times (6 am, noon, 6 pm)
● Keeping a consistent schedule; this pertains to trips outside, feeding, and exercise.
● Providing regular exercise—it helps with motility
● Reinforcing your puppy for “going” outside
● Take puppy out every hour to p*e (except at night)
2. INVEST INTO PREVENTION PRODUCTS
The carpet inside a house is the closest thing that resembles grass to a puppy.
That’s why if there are any accidents, it’s probably going to most often be on a carpet and not on a hardwood or bare floor. Crating off the
carpet areas and removing rugs will eliminate this confusion and make clean up easy. (baby gates work well, too)
I am sharing some products that I highly recommend to make it easier to navigate potty training. The waterproof washable mats last forever. A great place to put them is over carpet to prevent p*e accidents. Puppies will often confuse carpet for grass. At night, the pups are used to using the artificial grass tray. If you don't want to invest into getting one, I just ask that you buy a green towel as an "Emergency Potty" spot inside the house at least, it's a great way to trick pups to think its grass!
3. READ YOUR PUPS CLUES
Once you bring puppy home, you and the kids will start bonding and learning what he might like or things he likes to do. Anxiety, walking in circles, obsessive sniffing, squatting, tail lifting, door scratching, and winning can all be clues
Read clues and signs that your pup is asking to go outside before they become statements!
You got this! Let's do this 💩
I cover this in more detail in my preparation instructions pdf.
