August 15 is National Check the Chip Day! Microchips help us reunite hundreds of lost pets (including Stiles and Indy, pictured) with their families each year. Below, you’ll find a step-by-step guide on how to register your pet’s microchip or verify the contact information associated with it.

A microchip is a permanent form of identification that is placed under your pet's skin by a veterinarian or their staff. When detected by a scanner, the microchip provides a series of numbers that can be used to look up who a pet belongs to. But for a microchip to help a lost pet make it back home, it must be registered.

Many people assume their pet’s microchip was registered by their veterinarian, the organization they adopted from, or their breeder. This isn’t always the case. You might have to register the microchip yourself.

How to register a microchip or verify the contact information associated with it:

• Get your pet’s microchip number. This number may be in your vet records or your adoption paperwork. If you can’t find the number, your veterinarian’s office can scan your pet for the chip and give you the number. You can also stop by Animal Services with your pet and we’ll scan it for you!

• Go to PetMicrochipLookup.org and enter the microchip number. This database from the American Animal Hospital Association will provide you with the company to contact regarding the chip.

• Call or go to the microchip company’s website to register the chip or update your information. There is usually a fee to register the chip. You may want to create a secondary registration for the chip on a website like 24PetWatch.com (formerly Found Animals free microchip registration database). You should also call us at 503-846-7041 to add your pet’s microchip information to our records at Animal Services.

In addition to checking to make sure your pet’s microchip is registered, make sure they are also wearing a collar with an ID tag.

A microchip can help an animal make it back home once the pet arrives at an animal shelter or veterinarian’s office. But your neighbors will first look for a collar and tag if they find your furry friend, which will get them home faster and without detour to the shelter!

We want to thank Coastal Farm & Ranch in Cornelius for their recent donation of dog food. They stepped up to help last week after learning we needed pet food to deliver to locations housing Lee Falls Fire evacuees. Providing pet supplies is one way we can make emergency shelters for humans more pet-friendly, and Coastal Farm & Ranch helped us do that!

A young animal lover stopped by the shelter today to drop off a monetary donation she collected from her friends and bus driver to help the pets temporarily staying with us. We are so grateful to be part of such a caring community!

Donations like this one help us continue to reunite lost pets with their owners, provide medical care for injured and sick stray animals, investigate animal neglect and abuse, and more.

Wow! Incredible work by the Washington County Sheriff's Posse and the team at Hillsboro's Westside Commons during the recent Lee Falls Fire. They made sure livestock in need of evacuation got out safely and had a place to go.

Thank you to the Beaverton Valley Times for this article.

By Friday, Aug. 9, 55 animals had been rounded up, most of them by the Washington County Sheriff’s Posse.

is the purr-fect reminder to make sure you have an emergency plan in place for your cat. Many of our feline friends don’t like getting in their carriers or otherwise being told what to do or where to go. But if you ever need to evacuate, taking your pet with you helps ensure they are safe and cared for in an emergency.

Plan ahead for an emergency by helping your cat become more comfortable with a crate or carrier. Every cat is different, but you may find this advice helpful: https://www.petfinder.com/cats-and-kittens/training/general/cat-hates-carrier/

Coco stopped by the shelter with his human to renew his Washington County dog license. When we tried to snap one quick picture, this little cutie started doing all their best moves for the camera!

If you have a cute pup of your own who is due for a license renewal (or their very first license!), visit www.WashingtonCountyDogLicense.com to learn more about options for doing that online, over the phone, by mail or in person.

We loved meeting Coco, but bringing your dog to the shelter is not required for licensing. We know not everyone is as excited to visit us a Coco was!

It's hot today! The heat can pose serious risks to your pet. Age, weight, coat type, health conditions and breed can all impact the ability for a pet to tolerate heat. Breeds with short noses or flat faces may especially be at risk.

Learn the symptoms of overheating. Excessive panting, difficulty breathing, increased heart and respiratory rate, and weakness can be some of the first signs of trouble. Overheating can also cause other symptoms such as seizures, bloody diarrhea and vomiting. Contact your veterinarian or an emergency veterinary hospital immediately if you think your pet may be overheating.

30/07/2024

Temperatures are going to be warming back up over the next week. Thank you to the Oregon Veterinary Medical Association for these summer safety tips!

Here are some safety reminders to help everyone have a fun summer:

🚗Don't leave your pet in a vehicle. Even with the window cracked, the temperature inside a car can quickly climb to more than 110 degrees. Dogs don't perspire, they pant. Heatstroke is life-threatening for animals and can happen when dogs are left in cars with the windows rolled up or cracked slightly. If not caught in its earliest stages, heatstroke can be fatal. Symptoms of heatstroke include: panting, dehydration, excessive drooling, increased body temperature - above 103° F (39° C), reddened gums and moist tissues of the body, production of only small amounts of urine or no urine, and rapid heart rate.

💦Provide your pet with plenty of clean, cool drinking water. This is very important in order to avoid dehydration. However, do not let your dog drink a lot of water before, during or after exercise because a condition called gastric torsion, or bloat, may result. A dog, especially a deep-chested breed like the German Shepherd, can die from bloat. Its stomach may swell and even rotate like a wringing towel, which cuts off blood supply through the stomach.

☀ Avoid exercising your pet during the midday summer heat. Exercising your animal is important, but it is better to do so in the early morning or evening hours when the temperatures are lower, and the pavement isn't so hot. Your dog can get damaged or blistered feet from hot asphalt. Consider running on the roadside or grass, or walking your dog early in the morning or later in the evening.

🏃If you jog with your dog, it is important to ensure that your dog is healthy enough to jog with you, enjoys it, and that you have gradually built an exercise program that your dog can handle. Dogs can suffer from heatstroke if overworked, particularly in hot weather.

🏞You and your dog may be tempted to go into a river, lake or stream to cool off. Make sure to be aware of current toxic algae advisories, for your health and that of your dog: https://www.oregonvma.org/toxic-algae-advisories When in doubt, stay out.
