Read on for tips to keep pets safe this New Year's Eve.

New Year’s Eve celebrations can bring fireworks and other loud noises that may frighten some pets, potentially causing them to panic and escape from their enclosures or to bolt away from their owners. Even pets that have never seemed bothered by loud noises before can develop new fears.

Tips for keeping your pet safe and secure:

• If you think your furry friend might fear loud noises, call your veterinarian ASAP to discuss medication or other options for reducing your pet’s fear.

• Verify that your pets’ tags and microchips have current and updated information. License your dog at www.washingtoncountydoglicense.com if you have not done so already. If you need to register or update the information associated with your pet’s microchip, check out our step-by-step guide at https://beavertonresourceguide.com/is-your-pets-microchip-registered-dont-assume-it-was-done-for-you/.

• Check your fence and gates for loose or warped boards and spots where your dog or another critter has started to tunnel. Check that your gate is closed and latched, and that it stays latched.

• Keep your dog on a leash for their potty breaks on New Year’s Eve. Consider doing this even in your own backyard.

• Pick a room in your home that can provide a safe space for your pet while there is additional noise. Make this a positive space with treats, cuddles and their favorite bedding. Add soft music, talk radio or white noise to the room.

If you find a stray pet or your own animal goes missing during the holiday, you can find resources on our website at https://www.washingtoncountyor.gov/animal-services/lost-and-found-pets.

The Bonnie Hays Animal Shelter will be closed to the public on New Year’s Day, but resources on our website are available 24/7. The shelter will be open regular hours on both December 31 and January 2.

Earlier this week, our administrative specialists and outreach coordinator got into the holiday mood with fun sweaters and a photo by the tree in our lobby. 🎄🎄🎄

As a reminder, we will be closed Christmas Day. But we'll be open regular hours on December 24, and we think a shiny new dog license tag would be the perfect piece of bling to give your pup for the holidays!

Tigger stopped by the shelter with his human today to get his very first Washington County dog license!

If you have a dog, visit www.washingtoncountydoglicense.com to learn more about licensing your furry friend in-person, online, by mail or over the phone.

Don't worry if your dog isn't up for a trip to visit us. We loved meeting this cutie, but bringing your dog to the shelter is not required for licensing.

Happy holidays from the Bonnie Hays Animal Shelter! Read on for information about our holiday hours, as well as tips for keeping pets safe this time of year.

Holiday hours:

The Bonnie Hays Animal Shelter is generally open to the public for walk-in services Monday-Saturday from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Phones are answered Monday-Saturday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

We will be CLOSED to the public on both Christmas Day and New Year's Day.

However, we will be OPEN regular hours on both Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve.

Even when we are closed, you can visit www.WashingtonCountyPets.com to report a lost or found animal, view stray pets located at the shelter, license your dog online, and more.

Holiday pet safety:

With the excitement of the season, it’s easy for a door or gate to get left open, a pet to escape during travel, or for a visitor to accidently let an indoor-only cat outside. Check that your pet is wearing a collar with an easy-to-read ID tag, that your dog’s license is current, and that your pet’s microchip is registered and the contact information associated with it is correct.

This can be a stressful time of year for people and pets, alike! The American Veterinary Medical Association offers an extensive list of tips and ideas for keeping pets and the people who interact with them safe during the holidays: https://www.avma.org/resources-tools/pet-owners/petcare/holiday-pet-safety

Thank you for helping us keep pets and people safe this holiday season!

Nala and Bluey (pictured) were just two of the 15 dogs reunited with their families at the Bonnie Hays Animal Shelter last week! We also transferred nine canines and 13 felines to partner organizations for eventual adoption, and facilitated the direct adoptions of two dogs to people who had previously provided care for them. Thank you for your continued support!

When a stray pet is brought to our shelter, we do everything we can to reunite them with their family. But, sometimes we can’t. In those cases, we offer the option for the person who brought the animal to us to adopt them if they would like. That’s what happened last week when these two cuties were adopted by their finder. ❤

It was tough to get a non-blurry picture with all the excitement, but check out those adorable holiday sweaters a staff member donated so the pups could go home in style!

Did you know that if you find a lost dog wearing a Washington County license tag, you can use the dog license lookup tool on our website to help the pup get back home?

When you type a dog license number into the lookup tool located at https://petharbor.com/search/Search.aspx?cid=WSCO, you'll get the phone number of the owner. Other counties have similar services.

We’re here to help, but contacting a dog’s owner directly is often the fastest way to get them back home!

You can find more lost and found pet resources on our website at https://www.washingtoncountyor.gov/animal-services/lost-and-found-pets.

Pictured here is Butters. Butters was reunited with his family when a community member who found him used the license lookup tool on our website to contact his owner. We love a happy reunion whether it happens at our shelter or in your neighborhood!
