If your dog struggles during vet visits, this might be the easiest fix you haven’t tried yet: bring a yoga mat!

Yep. A simple yoga mat.

Why? Because nearly every vet clinic floor or exam table is slippery. And for a lot of dogs, being asked to sit or stand still on a slick surface while strangers hover nearby results in the dog not completing the cue. (And for some? A full-on meltdown.)

I’ve seen plenty of confident dogs freeze up or fumble through their cues just because their feet are sliding out from under them.

With a non-slip yoga mat:
✔️ Dogs feel more stable and secure
✔️ It’s easier to perform familiar cues like sit, down, or stand
✔️ It can reduce physical stress on older dogs or those with pain
✔️ It’s portable, easy to clean, and usually doesn’t raise eyebrows at the clinic

Cut one to fit your dog’s size or the top of an exam table and bring it with you to your next visit. We find ours for super cheap at Five Below!

This isn’t a magic fix for all vet stress, but it’s a small change that can make a surprisingly big difference.

Let’s talk about a super simple trick I use to manage jumping. And no, it doesn’t involve tossing treats on the ground or asking your dog to sit at the door while they’re vibrating with excitement.

With my own dogs, I actually don’t teach them not to jump.
What I do instead? I make the backyard part of the routine.

When I come home, I walk straight in and head to the back door.

No petting, no big greetings, just a quick "let’s go outside!”

And because my dogs love being in the yard, they’ve learned that me entering the house = going out in the yard.

Now, when I walk in the front door? They run right to the back, waiting to be let out. No jumping. No chaos. No asking them to sit 15 times.

Is this the solution for every dog? Definitely not. It only works if your dog finds outdoor access reinforcing.

But for the right dogs, this tiny change in the routine can completely shift that frantic moment at the door into something manageable.

Even if you only use it temporarily, just to buy yourself 30 seconds to get into training mode, it gives you a better starting point to teach the greetings you want long-term.

Sometimes the best training is just smart routine patterns with your dog’s natural preferences in mind.

Something personal today… 👓🐾

I was recently diagnosed with BVD (Binocular Vision Dysfunction), a condition where the eyes struggle to work together as a team. It’s not about how clearly you see, it’s about how your brain processes what you see. And for me? My brain was working overtime for years.

I used to think I was just clumsy. I bumped into things constantly and laughed it off as “quirky.” And you all KNOW how I feel about that word!

But behind that was constant low-level frustration. I’d get overwhelmed in big stores, anxious in the car, and felt a weird, creeping sense of dread in certain visual environments. Watching dog gait videos, even when the camera was still, made me motion sick.

Reviewing footage drained me and I assumed that was just my brain being tired.

Turns out, it was my eyes.
They were working way harder than they should’ve been.

Yesterday, I got my new prism glasses and I could cry with relief.

No nausea. Less anxiety. Most importantly: I can watch your dogs’ videos without feeling seasick or foggy.

It took me over 30 years and five eye doctors to get this diagnosis.
But someone finally listened.

And that’s what I want to share with you: even small health issues, whether in humans or dogs, can drastically shape behavior, stress levels, and quality of life.

I’ve had so many behavior cases where the turning point wasn’t training. It was getting the dog in front of the right vet on the right day. Getting in front of someone who finally saw what others missed. Health impacts behavior all the time - not just some of the time.

Thank you to Vivid Visions Optometry, Inc for pointing me in the right direction, and to the Poplarville Eye Clinic for believing me, listening, and investigating thoroughly.

Health matters. You deserve answers. So do our dogs.
