PSA
This has come up several times recently.
One came in at a vet office I was visiting with shredded throat.

Don't ever use sheep shears on matted dogs.

Sheep shearing is completely different from dog grooming. Their wool isn't matted to the skin when maintenance is done. Their tangles are from the environment and on the outer layer. Severe Dog matting is tight to the skin. If sheep's wool was matted it would be unusable trash, not used to make yarn for clothing.

If you ever have a dog terribly matted (beyond what is safe for a regular groomer to do) talk to a vet to have them sedated for their groom.

I've seen dogs terribly injured from using improper tools. They can have bruising, loss of blood flow to the area, injuries hiding, and more.

It doesn't save money to have to patch them up at the vet later. Afterwards they can be understandably frightened of grooming.

AKC Fetch Titles are coming in the new year. You can start getting ready by having good recall, fetch skills, and working among distractions.

If you need help or want to get started practicing for the upcoming titles we will offer classes starting in January

Everyone feels better after being clean. It's less hair flying for owners too!

Nail trims and quick baths teach puppies and kittens that grooming is a normal part of life, setting them up for a less stressful time being groomed.

Let's talk cats. Particularly senior cats.
As cats age they can slow down. They "sharpen" their claws less, they produce more oils, get dandruff, and mats.

It isn't the cats fault their body is changing. They need regular nail trims to prevent in grown nails. Regular baths and desheds reduce oily build up, dandruff, hairballs, and matting.

Cats have a luxurious coat that just needs proper maintenance to sink into the softest thing you've ever seen.

Impulse control is a nice trick but it's so much more.

It's seeing something you can't wait to have and waiting anyway.

The cat or bird that streaked across the yard doesn't mean you'll get pulled down if your dog is willing to look to you first.

It's leaving the food on the counter alone.

It's being able to have your dog attend more events.

It's including your dog at the picnic and knowing you'll get to eat without him stealing the food.

It doesn't mean he won't get to have treats and fun. He will actually get more rewards because he gets to go more often.

Cost of grooming for the basics. Not the best shears, best shampoos, the minimum.

Least expensive courses I've encountered are around 500.00.

You'll need professional equipment:

Quality blow dryer (k9 dryer, flying pig are two good brands) they run between 250 to 500ish dollars.

A good clipper Andis 2 speed or wahl KM 2 speed (there are a ton out there but these are 2 popular work horses that are used widely by professionals and not the highest end). So you won't replace them every other day. They range in price but figure around $200-300

You'll need a variety of blades 10, 30 to use under guard combs for longer lengths, guard combs ($50ish), 5 blade if you want a short but not super short cut, 7 blade is shorter than 5. Each blade ranges in price from 25 to 35 dollars.

Blade sharpening needs to be done to prevent injury and pulling on coat. Typically $8 dollars each. This way you don't have to replace blades everytime they dull.

You'll need a case to keep shears and blades safe as they are an investment (20 or so for cheaper end)

Shears: curves, straights, chunkers, thinners low end but decent quality start at around $90 each. Sending off for sharpening is important when dull to get best results to hair cut. My sharpener charges $18 each.

A dog with that type coat you need a good brush so you don't work yourself to death and irritate the dog's skin. I prefer Chris Christensen coral brush they run around $85 each but other brands with similar structure are out there for around $45.

A good comb. You can go Amazon route and get cheap. Best are around $50.

You need quality shampoos and products because that 100% is the foundation to a good hair cut. You'll probably buy by the smaller bottle rather than a gallon (gallon of shampoo on the low end is 40 dollars). choose good product for both skin and coat of your dog. Also need tearless variety to use on their face (another expense).

You'll need a dilution bottle to mix shampoo properly $3-$6. .

Nail trimmers range from $10-60 depending if you just clip or dremel.

Ear cleaning solution and cotton balls put aside $10-15.

Ear powder unless you take to the vet to have that done (which is advisable for most) $15ish

Grooming table you can get a decent table for around $200. Totally worth saving your back and keeping the dog safe while sharp objects are around.

Now you can get super cheap items but you'll have them break, wear out, get half way and crap out, or risk injury to your dog. Before I became professional I had the most basic but I saved to buy quality so it was cheaper and safer in the long run.

This isn't counting experience, CPR and First aid courses, continuing education courses, extras like polish and bows or dyes.

Not counting safety gear like: ear protection, eye protection, masks (don't want groomers lung), muzzles, groomers helper to prevent dogs from spinning or rolling and hurting themselves),

Proper clothing so you don't have every hair that ever was attached to your body and all of them poking you at the same time.

Variety of shampoos for different skin and hair types.

Nope not counting any of that just the bottom basics.

So if you're still here yes grooming is an investment in equipment and education. The longer you do it the more you invest as you learn better equipment yields better results and less replacement.
