When you punish a cat for exhibiting a behavior you don’t like, it doesn’t stop the behavior. First, it’s important to understand that regardless of how unwanted the behavior is, it serves a purpose for the cat. Your cat isn’t scratching on the sofa or jumping on the counter just to make you mad. Animals engage in behaviors that serve a function (i.e. a pay-off). Additionally, many of the behaviors cat parents view as unwanted, such as furniture scratching, are normal, natural behaviors. When you sq**rt the cat with water for scratching the furniture you may momentarily stop the behavior but the cat has a normal and natural need to scratch. If he gets punished every time he attempts to engage in a normal behavior, he will probably become afraid of you and he’ll also continue the behavior in secret. That’s a very stressful combination.

This can be as simple as placing cat trees near windows or you can really take advantage of unused wall space and install cat shelves, cat skywalks, and wall-mounted stairways. There are many companies online that sell shelves and walkways for you to design a vertical world for your cat. Just be sure the pieces are sturdy and that you space them well so a cat doesn’t have to make a giant leap from one wall perch to another. It’s also important that you not create a dead end perch where a cat could be ambushed by another cat. Always have more than one on/off ramp.
Increased options for vertical territory can make a difference in helping maintain peace in a multicat household.

This is an X-ray of a dog’s bent front leg. See that tiny white spec? That’s a microchip! It has migrated down the leg....far from where it was inserted, between the dog’s shoulders. This is actually quite common.....

When lost pets are scanned, the entire body SHOULD be scanned to catch any that have migrated. But, as an owner, IT IS YOUR RESPONSIBILITY AT THEIR YEARLY VET EXAM, to ask for a quick scan to make sure that: (1) the chip is still working, (2) the location of the chip is good, and (3) that the chip info is correct.

Remember microchips save lives and reunite families with their pet.... just have it checked regularly!

We talk to our dogs a lot. It's only natural since they have such individual personalities themselves that it's hard not to talk to them the same way you would people. However, they do seem to understand us. Just think of how many times they know what words like "treats" and "walk" mean, as well as....
