The Cat Ambassador, Inc. The Cat Ambassador is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit dedicated to helping cats...and their people. and their people.

Founded in 2013, The Cat Ambassador, Inc., provides assistance to cats . . . One of our main objectives is to reduce the number of cats entering an already overburdened shelter system. The Cat Ambassador strongly advocates spay/neuter (may include Trap-Neuter-Return) to prevent pet overpopulation, as well as microchipping to increase the chances that lost cats will be reunited with their owners—in

stead of entering the shelter system as “strays.”

Specific services include:

Providing financial assistance to pet owners for cat food, litter, and veterinary care (including vaccinations and spay/neuter), and microchipping

Educating pet owners about feline health and behavior issues, and the general public about animal welfare, to help prevent neglect and cruelty

Working with cats and their people to resolve “thinking outside the litter box” issues

Helping to find lost cats and reunite found cats with their owners

Providing assistance with stray/feral cats; may include TNR (trap-neuter-return)

Making referrals to rescue groups and animal shelters if a cat must be surrendered due to unavoidable circumstances (a person’s death, ill health, or allergies)

Collaborating with local animal shelters and rescue groups to ensure the well-being of as many cats as possible

Promoting cats as great pets, and encouraging adoption from shelters and rescue groups

Been meaning to write this for a while now ever since I heard about it a few weeks ago. Then a screenshot of a post last week prompted me to think again and to get it written.
We have almost permanently been unable to take in any new cats for the last 2 years and longer. Simply down to the sheer number we have awaiting rehoming. Of course we have still helped cats, done lots of trap, neuter, release (TNR) of ferals (and strays) and of course have taken in emergency cases where it really was a life or death situation. My ultimate aim is and has always been to wind down and get back to sensible numbers so in an ideal utopia I can see the wood through the trees (and not the other way around).
But meanwhile every single year we have been open (over a decade now), I have seen the situation get worse and worse and more and more cats needing help. Where on earth can they all go?
This year has been our worst year in terms of adoptions and yet requests to take in cats must be up by over 100%.
Then the local branch of the RSPCA (Durham & District) closed its doors for the final time and stopped taking in cats.
A few weeks ago I heard the local branch of Cats Protection (Durham City & District) had also closed down - I heard this via hearsay and do not 100% know but their website has gone.
Then last week a rescue in Newton Aycliffe (Deliverance) posted that they were closing for good.
Let me tell you, love any of these organisations or hate any of these organisations, any rescues closing is a disaster for cats and the knock on effect onto other remaining rescues can be enormous.
Personally we've had unwanted run ins with two of the above but that does not mean they will not be a miss.
Across the whole of the country this is happening. Rescues are closing down due to lack of funds, lack of support, over stretching themselves by trying to take on too many animals. And so it goes on.
When will this country realise that until mandatory neutering for all cats is brought in, the situation will never improve. Of course there would be exceptions for registered breeders etc but we literally do not need anymore cats.
I see stories of people allowing their cats to get pregnant and then having to ask a rescue for help when they cannot even give away the kittens because demand is so low. People are struggling to feed themselves never mind their pets and cats are being abandoned left, right and centre.
I do not have the answers, except for being passionate about getting as many cats neutered as possible. I just sincerely hope in 2025, we can go forward and again help many many people get their cats done the way we have helped many in 2024. Finances are the key of course and we can only help when we have the funds to help but I promise you we will be working our hardest to make 2025 the best neutering year ever.
From January 1st I will start a list that people can request to be added to for help with neutering and we will work through that list as fast as the bank balance allows. We will work closely with vets as well and if any companies wanted to help fund our efforts by maybe sponsoring a neuter, they are more than welcome to get in touch with us.
The more cats neutered, the less will need help in the future and maybe no more kittens being found born outside or in sheds etc. Happier cats all round.
