Our Story
About S.P.A.Y.-L.E.E Inc. is an animal welfare organization comprised entirely of volunteers and located in Lee County, Florida. Our organization was founded in 1993. We are a tax deductible 501.c.3 charity, and our purpose is to take in small dogs(under 10 pounds) and Dobermans that are in need of new homes. We also help pet owners with referrals for low cost sterilization of pets. One of our missions is to stop the massive number of pets euthanized in this country.
We have no animal shelter, but house animals in need of rehoming in the homes of our volunteers, or in the homes of people trying to place their pets. We adopt by application, references, home visits and contract. Our contract assures the dogs in our care of being placed in homes where they will be maintained as indoor house pets. Our adoption fee ranges from $100 to $450, largely depending on what we have spent in order to bring an animal to adoptability. There are times that we have spent thousands of dollars on a needy but deserving animal. We do our best to offset these expenses through the generosity of our supporters to keep our adoption fees reasonable. Sometimes there is minimal cost necessary to get an animal into adoptable condition. In this case, a minimal adoption fee and microchipping charge is paid by the adopter.
About half the animals we have available for adoption come to us from animal shelters. We do off premises adoptions at PetSmart and Pet Supermarket stores locally, and internet rescue via petfinder.com and rescueme.org. We also network with Doberman rescues in the state. Since we have no shelter or business location, we are available for information or consultation at any time that someone is available to answer the phones. This includes weekends and nights. We have approximately 75 dues paying members at any given time, and do a newsletter 2-4 times a year. Our annual meeting is in December.
