Our Story
Sally Kemper, CDBC, CPDT-KA, is the owner and founder of Mander’s Best Friends and a Certified Dog Behavior Consultant with the International Association of Animal Behavior Consultants; Certified Professional Dog Trainer-Knowledge Assessed through the Certification Council for Professional Dog Trainers; Pet CPR and First-Aid Tech; American Kennel Club Canine Good Citizen Evaluator and Instructor; and a Professional Member of the Association of Pet Dog Trainers. She is committed to helping dogs in need of behavior modification and obedience training and service and therapy dog training and certification for individuals with disabilities.
Sally offers a myriad of skills as a CPR- and First-Aid-certified Professional Dog Obedience Trainer, Instructor and Behavior Consultant with expertise in training dogs of many different breeds and ages that present problematic behavior. She is committed to helping dogs in need and genuinely loves what she does, which is why she chose to pursue a diploma from the nationally accredited Penn Foster Institute for Obedience Training, Instructing and Behavioral Science, where the emphasis is on "The Total Dog Approach."
Sally has dedicated hundreds of hours towards case studies, hands-on training and study objectives that range from core areas of behavior (Ethology; Communication Behavior; Genetics; and Learning Theory, such as Operant and Respondent conditioning; Counter-conditioning; Systematic Desensitization; Behavior Replacement; and Extinction), to Search-and-rescue; Assistance/Service; Trick; and Obedience, Agility and Hunting Competition training. Her in-depth knowledge gained through education and actual hours of working in the field is maintained through periodic re-certification tests and continuing education. Additionally, Sally is an American Kennel Club (AKC) Canine Good Citizens (CGC) Evaluator and Instructor. She teaches classes and administers tests through her own company, Mander’s Best Friends, for the AKC CGC; AKC S.T.A.R. Puppy program; AKC Community Canine (the new advanced level of CGC); and AKC Urban CGC. These are programs she trains dogs for to prepare them for assistance work, such as service, therapy and guid dog training. Sally has helped hundreds of dog owners throughout the Los Angeles and surrounding areas by treating their pets with successful results for everything from puppy issues, separation anxiety and depression to fear-elicited and goal-directed aggressive behaviors. While some dogs simply need basic obedience training, for which she guarantees results, there's almost always a need for some behavior modification. There are training issues and there are behavioral problems. While behavior can be modified with obedience training, it can't be the only tool. To resolve most issues, she offers private and group classes for dog training as well as behavior management training programs tailored to each dog's individual need. These programs are designed to significantly improve the owner-dog relationship and likelihood of long-term desirable behavior. Sally is very patient with dogs and their owners and offers clear goals and objectives with easy-to-understand guidance, which is gentle but very effective. With a focus on positive reinforcement, her methods zero in on breed-specific issues while considering the dog's age; previous training; environment; reinforcers; prey, pack, defense and rank drives; and any temperament faults that might have been inherited through irresponsible breeding. Most important, all of her classes include lots of encouragement, fun and exercise, so her students have a great experience and look forward to learning.
Mander’s Best Friends also offers dog-walking; pet sitting; physical fitness; and park socialization services by our professional and caring staff of pet care experts.
