The way we began Aitutaki Community Cat Program
Our story: Our goal is to help the community of Aitutaki in the Cook Islands to create a stable, sustainable, healthy animal population with a spay/neuter/treatment program, using safe, humane and professional veterinary methods with experienced volunteer veterinary staff. To achieve this mission, we must raise funds ourselves in order to purchase supplies to do our work.
It began in 2017 when we saw a need for veterinary service to the cats of Aitutaki in the Cook Islands, which includes both domestic and feral cats. An opportunity to help was born out of a chance meeting with Steph Joseph of Aitutaki, who is as passionate about the cats as we are. In 2018 and 2019, volunteer veterinary teams were assembled, supplies ordered, flights purchased and we were on our way. All of this was either done through our own funds or minimally through raising money by FaceBook, GoFundMe and a local fundraiser. We have so far spayed/neutered/treated over 300 animals including 3 goats in just three veterinary missions. Te Are Manu, a locally registered charity is the only veterinary clinic in the Cook Islands. Based in Rarotonga (main island of Cook Islands), TAM assists our program with paperwork, advice, clearing customs and each of our organizations sharing in information in what works well for the benefit of all the Cook Islands animals.
Find out more about te Are Manu here: https://www.facebook.com/tearemanu/ or www.tearemanu.com.
We want to continue to help the community of Aitutaki and will commit to providing free veterinary services twice per year. The quality of life for the animals, the people and the island itself is improving as we carry on with the program.
