Happy Wildlife Wednesday! We wanted to share today, a very sweet video by The Ark Wildlife Rescue and Rehabilitation of five mockingbirds being re-released into the wild. These mockingbirds originally came into us as tiny featherless babies and received care from our doctors and have since been at the Ark for rehabilitation. It is moments like these that warm our hearts! For more re-release videos and rehabilitation stories please go to The Ark Wildlife Rescue and Rehabilitation page. We are so grateful to be apart of their team and their mission to care for injured, orphaned, or ill wildlife 🐦🐢🦉🦆🐦

Happy Too Cute Tuesday!

Rango is a 4 year old Chameleon that came in to see Dr. Ashley Siders who specializes in exotic pet care. He did great for his exam and was so friendly with our staff!

Did you know that it’s a common misconception that chameleons change color to blend in with their surroundings? They actually change colors based on their mood and social interactions. The colors light blue and green mean that a chameleon is happy and relaxed 🦎🥰

While many dogs function only as pets and companions, others can be life changers for their humans. Assistance dogs are found worldwide and perform various roles for humans with disabilities and health challenges.

To recognize and raise awareness about the amazing work of these dogs, International Assistance Dog Week is celebrated each year on the first Sunday in August, and in 2024, it runs from August 4th –August 10th.

Fun Facts About Service Dogs:
There are many types of service dogs: guide dogs for the visually impaired and deaf, diabetes service dogs that can sniff out low blood sugar, seizure alert dogs, medical alert dogs, emotional support dogs, and more.
The average service dog costs from $15,000 to $30,000 to train and keep healthy by the time they get paired with a disabled partner.
The typical service dog knows roughly 30 simple and complex commands.
Service dogs are specially trained to ignore distractions and watch for obstacles.
As per the Americans with Disabilities Act or ADA, service dogs get special treatment under the law and are allowed virtually anywhere other dogs aren’t allowed with their handler.

02/08/2024

The month of August is National Immunization Awareness Month. Just like with us, it is very important to keep your pets up to date on their vaccinations. The greatest form of protection against the many illnesses your pet can get is by vaccinating them. We strongly recommend vaccinating your pets every year to keep them protected.

Puppies and kittens should get their first vaccinations at 8 weeks old. They will then need vaccination boosters every 4 weeks until they are about 20 weeks to be full protected. It is very important to finish the entire vaccination series. Skipping booster vaccinations may leave your pet with incomplete protection, making them vulnerable to infection.

Here is a list of the common vaccines:

Canine Immunizations:
• Rabies
• DHPP (Distemper, Hepatitis, Para-Influenza, Parvo virus)
• Leptospirosis
• Bordetella
• Influenza
• Lyme

Feline Immunizations:
• Rabies
• FVRCP (Feline viral rhinotracheitis, calici virus, panleukopenia)
• FeLV (Feline Leukemia Virus)
• Feline Bordetella

Deciding on which vaccines your pet needs can vary based on medical history, age, breed, lifestyle, and travel habits. Also, some states and cities require specific vaccinations by law, in the state of Florida Rabies is required by law. Talk to one of our veterinarians to help decide what is best for your pet based on these factors.

Happy Wildlife Wednesday!

This young Mississippi Kite was found in the ground after a storm last week in St. Augustine and a kind individual brought it into us for care. Our doctors found some broken primary feathers but no other obvious injuries. The Ark Wildlife Rescue and Rehabilitation group transported him to The Avian Reconditioning Center for Birds of Prey in Apopka, Florida for further rehabilitation.

29/07/2024

July is Pet Hydration Awareness Month which emphasizes the importance of hydration and lets pet parents know about the early warning signs of dehydration. The month also raises critical awareness about the dangers of water intoxication, which occurs due to constant exposure to water bodies such as pools or garden hoses. Just like humans, pets need water to survive. Water is vital for maintaining proper bodily functions and plays a significant role in regulating body temperature, aiding digestion, and supporting organ function.

As responsible pet parents, we need to keep a close eye on our fur babies when they are exposed to the heat. You know your pet best– if they are not acting like themselves, it may be time to call for help! Here are some overall common indicators that our pets may be experiencing dehydration:

Loss of appetite, Dry mouth, Sunken eyes, Lethargy, Excessive panting, Diarrhea, Seizures, Elevated body temp, Racing heart
If you see any of these signs, contact your vet immediately and ask for guidance on your next steps.

Ways to make sure your pet pals stay hydrated:

-Check their water daily, if not multiple times daily and replace with FRESH water.
-Take water with you when traveling or taking long walks.
- Monitor your pets daily intake of water

If you can believe it, there is such a thing as consuming TOO much water. Water intoxication, also known as hyponatremia, is a relatively rare but potentially fatal condition that is most commonly seen in dogs that love their water time! Water games that involve retrieving items or diving into pools to catch toys can cause them to quickly ingest large quantities of water. It can also happen when they “catch” pressurized water from sprinklers or hoses. Excessive amounts of water cause the body to lose sodium and the cells begin to fill with water and swell. Here are some overall common indicators that our pets may be experiencing intoxication:

Loss of coordination , Glazed eyes, Vomiting, Bloating, Lethargy, Seizures, Excessive salivation, Difficulty breathing

Happy Wildlife Wednesday!

This osprey was brought into us today with a potential left wing or shoulder issue. Luckily after our doctors examined it, it was found to have neither issue. It appeared the osprey was just in shock and holding its wing in an odd position. It will be heading off to rehab with The Ark Wildlife Rescue and Rehabilitation this afternoon where it will hopefully soon be re-released after some steady rest and good nutrition.

Please help us help orphaned, injured, and ill wildlife by donating at www.the arkrescue.org/donate

Happy Too Cute Tuesday from Zirrie!

Zirrie is a 5 year old male Dwarf Rabbit and has been coming into us since he was about 2 years old. Isn’t he just adorable! Did you know that we provide care for exotic pets here? Dr. Ashley Siders is our only veterinarian here that also provides care for reptiles, rodents, snakes, rabbits, ferrets, and other small exotic animals. Along with being seen when they are sick or injured, exotic pets also need regular vet care tailored specifically for them and their care can differ from more common pets like cats and dogs. We are so lucky to have Dr. Siders on board to provide comprehensive and quality care for our exotic patients 🐾🐭🐹🐰🐍🦎🐾
