Happy Behavior Update!!!

This handsome gent is Basil. About a year ago, Basil had an abrupt change in his personality along with some other changes like decreased appetite. He also started showing extreme distress when he was home alone, trembling and even tearing up doors and blinds. Separation disorders like this are very tough to live with for the whole family. Since seeing the Behavior Team 3 months ago, Basil has been able to stay home alone calmly for up to 8 hours regularly! This was a huge win, but we’re also thrilled to hear that Basil is feeling more like his old self again! He is sassy and playful every night, chewing bones which he hadn’t done in months, and soaking up the sun in the yard and community garden.

Russian Blue is Ivan. He’s active, playful, and still shy around humans but I’m socializing him and he’s so beautiful, soft and cute.

Tabby is Butch. He was the runt of the litter and acts like a tough guy. He’s getting comfortable with being held and loves pets. Adorable little guy! His socialization is going very well.

The calico is Uma. She’s a truly special cat, even your vet said so. Very chill, and turns into a purring machine when you hold her. She loves being held and will be a great lap cat.

They are between 6-8 weeks old. They were rescued from my neighbor’s yard in east Austin and we trapped mama cat and spayed and released her.

Happy Behavior Update!

Garrus (right) and Kiri (left) came in for behavior rechecks with the Behavior Team recently. Garrus first saw Dr. Sirois for excessive licking, chewing, and eating inedible items. After making some medication adjustments, we also got Garrus in with an internal medicine doctor who diagnosed him with IBD! Once that was treated, he has been doing much better, no more vomiting, and he can even use fun toys like snuffle mats without eating them! He is also very good at begging for treats, as you can see, but then was able to relax at the clinic for the first time.

Then we met Kiri, who was very scared of people in particular. After starting her treatment plan, she has been making some good progress! Not only has she been able to make some human friends at daycare, but she is also more playful and affectionate with her family and even wagging her tail at home. For reference, the first visit she hid under a chair the entire time and this time she is out asking for treats! We’re so proud of these kids!

While this is a really sad statistic, it does mean that WE can do something to CHANGE IT.
Bites RARELY happen out of the blue — All too often, miscommunication is at the root of the issue. We expect dogs to read our likes and dislikes — but often have no idea how to read theirs.
