A little about LATIGOS:
If you’re unfamiliar, a Latigo Strap is the strap that connects the saddle girth, or “cinch”, to the saddle. There is a Latigo Strap on each side of the saddle to secure the girth beneath the horse, therefore securing the saddle in place on top.
The two most common types of Latigo Straps are Leather and Nylon. Leather is a natural fiber. It actually has some natural give and stretch when pulled/pushed on. Nylon is a manmade fiber. It has zero give and stretch when pulled/pushed on. I prefer to use Leather Latigos vs Nylon for this reason. Leather Latigos also don’t generally fade or fray over time like Nylon Latigos do, so that’s a plus ✨.
The natural give and stretch in a Leather Latigo allows your horse’s rib cage more freedom to expand and contract. This can be very beneficial, especially on competition days, as well as heavy training/work days when your horse might be breathing heavier and/or using it’s body to it’s full athletic potential. I like knowing that my girth is secure enough to keep my saddle in place, but also comfortable enough to keep my horses from getting sore, or galled, and worse—“cinchy”.
It is recommended to only use a Nylon Latigo if you are using a natural fiber girth, such as a Mohair, or other natural woven fiber. These type of girths also have some give and stretch to them, therefore making up for the lack thereof with a Nylon Latigo. I personally don’t prefer to use this type of girth, simply because they tend to collect and hold more dirt and moisture which can create the perfect environment for fungis, and then you have a whole different problem 😵💫, lol. I am not against this type of girth, I just don’t prefer them.
Unfortunately, most saddles do come with Nylon Latigos, however you can easily remove them, and replace with Leather Latigos yourself. I will make a tutorial on this soon! It is ve
