OUR YEAR IN REVIEW: PLEASE READ!
As we end 2023 and start 2024 we are deep in reflection over the past year. Starting with the last week of 2022, a year ago which had many challenges. On Christmas Eve we lost power at 3pm until 4 pm Christmas Day due to the once in a lifetime Polar Vortex with under 15 degree temps. We could not leave the rescue for warmth because we had take care of the dogs, and all the puppies we had here to try to keep them safe from the cold, plus all our cameras going out with the electricity we used to check on them all. The last week of December Charlie broke his foot when he stepped in a hole, Sandi had to have an x-ray on her face due to a fractured ocular orbit. When the power came back on Christmas Day (We have a WELL, could not leave water dripping) the pipes burst flooding the house and camper. Since the well did not have electric there was silt in it when it came back on. It got into the washing machine (which could never be fixed) and messed up the shower as well as all the faucet screens. That along with other issues at the time we thought our rescue days were over, and the rescue would have to CLOSE. BUT WE PERSEVERED!! Sandi took care of all the dogs until February 4th when Charlie was cleared by the doctor to be back on his feet. She walked 4 miles a day running to do everything around here. We still were rescuing at that time too. February 4th we took off with a bang, and have not stopped rolling WE BROKE A RECORD OVER 200 DOGS SAVED IN 2023. Due to the amount of surrenders we started a new thing we call "VIrtual Adoptions" We matched approved adopters that we did not have the type of Pyr they were looking for with owner surrenders to save more dogs. We did not ask for a donation or adoption fee for this service! We just wanted to save as many dogs as possible! We did have many challenges this past year starting with Chevi, all the care he needed, and his siblings being born prematurely and even with the vet they did not make it but he was a strong willed one. Then all the heart worm positives, all the medically needed, all the injuries that Pyrs came in with, all the care put into other puppies, the two puppies found at the dump, the expenses many times maxing out the rescue account and credit card to handle it all. And of course our biggest challenge of all, saying good-bye to our Samson due to old age. There were other challenges too along with many joys and much happiness. Thanks to Ani and her foundation we received funds for infrastructure and we were able to do such things as smoothing out much of the concrete and having it sealed. We built a new small tool shed on a concrete slab, build a new adoption center at the front that is not finished yet, built 2 new fences, we had to replace the floors indoors due to burst pipes, and fix the plumbing, replace much of it, we divided up the garage with wooden panels for the dog areas, made repairs, and the best part, we had James Smith, a very famous artist paint our front gate for an amazing price. We still have much left that needs to be done with repairs and infrastructure, much cement needs to be smoothed and finished, staining, painting, finishing building the adoption center, we need new doors, and an outdoor sink, we hope to build a bathing area in 2024 for the dogs, finishing a new kennel at the front for new dogs before introducing to the other dogs and vetting if need be. We had two wonderful sisters who had donated years & years 2 bags of dog food a week, and due to circumstances beyond their control they were not able to anymore. We can't appreciate them enough for that!! Rising dog food costs and vet costs continue to go up. Two bags of food the food we use are $120 and we go through 2 1/2 a week. We don't want to switch to a cheaper food. We use Purina One Lamb & Rice for Large Breeds, plus Jake is on Salmon and Pea due to issues with meats, cat food, vet bills for them, and frontline. The other day we bought 2 boxes of Simparica Trio 12 pills, enough for the puppies, the small size pills, but not enough for the bigger dogs. It was $300 for 12 pills! It went up $5 a pill and we go through 9 a month just for the big dogs!!! We still make it somehow thanks to everyone's kind donations! We are a adoption only location based rescue and rely totally on those funds!! THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU for all the fundraisers, donations monetarily, and of needed items. We also would like to thank T**a for stepping up and helping so much around here taking over Samson's duties. We love you Samson and miss you so much! we would also like to thank the Humane Society of Catawba County and Catawba County Animal Services or all their assistance through the year, and Howie Livengood who transports dogs for free sacrificing his own gas, time, and vehicle! We also have retained some more fosters, we thank them, we always need more. This year we hope to raise enough funds to expand the rescue to TWO more locations!! They need fencing and sheds for kennels, and cover to be built, a huge EXPENSE, and project but with your help we can DO IT, and SAVE MANY MORE DOGS!! The surrender requests keep coming EVERY SINGLE DAY!! Thank you for taking the time to read this long POST!! If you read the entire thing LIKE OR COMMENT!!!
