These photos look like they were taken at sea world, but these were wild sea lions that came right up to the boat! They were so curious and interactive, particularly with Addie the dog! I think they kept wondering why that furry sea lion was on the boat and Addie kept wondering why those hairless dogs were diving in the water... We ended up jumping in to snorkel around with them - one of the most amazing experiences in our time as liveaboards! You can watch the whole interaction in our latest episode, now on Youtube! What was your greatest boating experience, or best wildlife encounter?

We spotted this dolphin entangled in a fishing net while anchored near Loreto. We jumped in our the Highfield dinghy, grabbed the boat hook and a snorkel 🤿 and headed over to see what we could do. I first attempted to swim closer to them, they of course kept their distance. We then attempted to approach on the dinghy and got really close! But with a 3hp motor the dolphins were just too quick, and although curious didn’t come close enough for us to hook the net. We were able to see though that the net wasn’t wrapped around tightly and seemed there was a chance it may even “fall off”. We didn’t want to stress the pod, so opted to give up, take some photos and GPS coordinates and send it to the experts. has disentangled whales, dolphins, sea lions and turtles all over Baja. Remember if you find injured marine life it is always better to contact the experts for advice and only provide intervention if advised by a professional (I have been involved in marine mammal rescue and disentanglements so felt confident taking a look ourselves, but it’s important to know when you can cause more harm then good chasing wild animals with no results!). A dolphin with a net was not spotted again here so we assume the net came off, as the pods frequent the same areas over and over.

Graphic Photo of Animal Injuries - Dra Jenni found this abandoned puppy with myiasis, otherwise known as fly strike (maggots infesting wounds). Thankfully with her dedication and treatment which include nightly bottle feeding, wound care, antibiotics and pain relief, he is now thriving and all healed from his injuries! She is now looking to find him his fur ever home ♥️ We are so grateful that Dra Jenni continues the work we started in Puerto Madero, providing low cost veterinary care to the pets of her community and rescuing strays like this little guy. We provide ongoing funding for Dra Jenni’s work - if you’d like to help cover the cost of this puppies treatment and our other projects in the area visit www.vettails.com/donate

How I relax after a long surgery day... Self care is such an important part of my life, when I worked as a veterinarian full time in Australia I really struggled with this. I would work 60 hours a week, then manage the clinic's social media from home, sitting in front of the TV eating some packaged pasta mix and drinking a glass of wine, then stay up late trying to get just a little time to myself, then wake up tired and do it all over again! I have since learned to prioritize my well being, and that I am a better friend, partner, veterinarian and person when my cup is full... I am better able to help my patients and be there for the people and animals that need me when I am well rested, eating well, exercising and meditating. I developed the Veterinary Wellness Retreat workshop around the principles I have learnt myself... often the hard way! You can learn more about it on my other page

was only onboard for ten days but I feel like we did A LOT in that time, we visited two remote communities, did two vaccination days, a spay day, went snorkelling, sailing and SUPing... and spent a bunch of time swapping vet school and life stories which was really fun. It was really cool to hang out with someone from a different generation and with different life experiences, it is a great way to get a different perspective of the world. We really appreciated our time with Jeremiah, and look forward to taking students or volunteers again! If you are a veterinarian, technician or student looking to do something different... Jeremiah, a vet student from Cornell, spent 10 days with us on Chuffed. We visited two communities to do vaccinations and spay/neuter over that time.
Our surgical clinic looks a little different to what he has seen at Cornell… well a lot different! But we take all the steps we can to make “field surgery” as safe as possible. We place animals on intravenous fluids, have emergency drugs and endotracheal tubes ready, and you can see Jeremiah was monitoring the anesthetic using our most basic and important tool… ourselves! By regularly checking gum color, capillary refill time, heart rate, respiratory rate and a few other physical factors he was able to help me decide if our patient was getting too “light” in their anesthesia or showing any signs of distress. Although we don’t have the fancy tools of a large hospital I truly believe these skills are invaluable for vet students to learn, we can’t always rely on machines to be giving us the correct information and our best tool truly is our own brain!

Finding the time, energy and space on board Chuffed for a good exercise routine can be hard, especially when we are doing a lot of moving and vet work. But we really try to make the effort to get a little something in. This little piece of deck is the only place you can 'stretch' out on Chuffed without a lean in one direction or the other, so it has become my little ocean side yoga-deck. It's not big but it's got one hell of a view!

It was awesome having Mr Atticus Guy and on board helping us move Chuffed up the coast, visiting communities to deliver vet care along the way. But they are now back in Canada, and although we miss them we have new crew to introduce you to soon!

Exciting news... this is our new dinghy!!! We are so in love, so far keeping us dry, we had 2 people, a propane tank, 3 jerry jugs of water, veterinary medicine and a week of groceries in it the other day and it handled it like a charm. Thank you to and for organizing an amazing deal for us so we could afford the upgrade. You'll be seeing a lot more of this little badboy, still thinking of a name...

I first met Nike a few months after purchasing Chuffed in 2017, she was anchored nearby in Panama City and being two aluminium boat chicks we hit it off right away. 7 years on we are both still on those same aluminium boats, boats that were in pretty bad condition at the time, that now have new engines, new sails, and our blood, sweat and tears in them! She has been an inspiration to me when things got hard, and has been a patron since the early days too. We finally shared an anchorage again on the beautiful Island of Espiritu Santo. Although it's often a year or so between our catch ups, the friendship forged over our mutual love for our boats, the ocean and our belief in making the world a better place is as strong as ever! Love you Nike!

A few months ago we happened to be in a toy store, and I picked up a box that caught my eye and said to Jim “I would have loved this when I was a little girl”! We then looked a little closer… and realized the toy set was a female veterinarian on a boat, treating sick animals with her little portable vet box, and her male partner filming her! Umm that sounds a little familiar, have we been turned into toys?! Since then, we investigated further and the coincidences continued, with the online description sounding eerily similar to our day to day lives. So we thought it would be a good opportunity to reach out to about collaborating with The Sailing Vet. We haven’t heard back from them via email but thought maybe this would be a fun way to reach them, tag below and maybe they will see this post and respond to us, think it is time their little boat vet leaves the Amazon to explore the oceans under sail! We attempted to recreate the cover on the box… my photoshop skills need some work, but hey I’m a vet not an artist!

It has been a huge season onboard Chuffed. Since going back in the water in November 2023 we have provided free or low cost treatment to almost 400 animals!!! That is no mean feat for a small organization like ours, and we truly couldn’t have done it without you all. If you would like to continue to help us provide much needed preventative care and treatments to animals in need please visit www.vettails.com/donate or follow the links in our bio

This episode is a special one... Mum and Dad FINALLY get to go sailing on Chuffed! As many of you remember they put weeks of hard work into Her when she was hauled out... with the idea after the 6 week refit we'd all go sailing... one pandemic, 4 years and a new engine later they are here!

I am having “one of those” weeks! We realized we wouldn’t be able to go ahead with the rigging because of finances, which was a bummer but oh well next season, decided to take the car back to loreto to await our arrival there. On the way engine started smoking, and got a flat tire… then we get back to Chuffed and a water pipe burst! Well they say it comes in threes… I go to log in to WhatsApp (chat app) to continue organizing our veterinary campaigns and I’ve been kicked off! My Australia phone numbers not been in use over 6 months and was reassigned! 24 hours later I manage to recover everything on my Mexican number… send everyone an update telling them and get flagged for spam for texting too many people! I get kicked off again, write to WhatsApp, 24 hours they reinstall me. At this point I’m like what is going on… go to update our Navionics (boat navigation app) today and turns out the iPad is too old now and the app doesn’t work! Tell me, hows your week going? 😅❤️🌊⛵️
*edit - soon after writing this post we found a bottle of milk had leaked in the fridge, through the small opening at the bottom and down behind our cupboards into the bilges… might be time for another smudge stick!

Huge success in Agua Verde - 90 dogs and cats vaccinated for rabies and their core vaccines. It was a funny day - we started at the Palapa and things were a bit slow, we then realized it was Sunday - which means family day after church! So one of the local guys, Joel, drove us around to each party where a huge group of people and their dogs and cats would all be hanging out, we'd vaccinate 20-odd animals and then move on to the next party! We vaccinated every animal we could find (some cats were MIA...) and I think it is safe to say we won't be seeing any of these preventable diseases in Agua Verde anytime soon! The community was extremely grateful, as were we. So thank you to all of our donors, in particular the McKinnon family - this one is for Lisa.

Sunsets onboard with our little family. Addie's dad (Ian - Jim's Bro) is joining us for the next leg of the journey so our crew will expand again before Addie heads back to life in Canada. He is looking forward to being able to get kangaroo dog treats at the grocery store again, but will miss the freedom of being a boat dog in Mexico.
