This was our fourth time crossing the Sea of Cortez with Chuffed, and you'd think by now I'd be completely calm about the whole thing. But we had a fair bit of wind and I was actually a little nervous! Right when we lifted anchor a huge blue whale popped up next to the boat, so that kind of set me off thinking hope we don't hit any whales... and then as the wind picked up we were sailing really well but on a beam reach - which meant the short period seas were hitting us side on. Wasn't super comfortable and it sometimes meant a wave came up over the side, or we'd kind of dip and heel deeply as we came over the crest and dropped into the trough. And of course sailing Chuffed to San Carlos means prepping to haul out, which means change, and despite living as a nomad and always doing new things my brain still hates change! BUT I embraced the nerves and let them roll over into excitement, and it was a pretty sporty sail! It ended up being fun, and with Jim's ever-calm presence I knew everything was actually totally fine and as the day wore on I fell into the groove. I really love the challenges sailing provides, and although I may never be this cool, calm, confident sailor at all times I do know Chuffed can do it and we can do it, and I always feel proud after doing a crossing like this. Also - we made it in record time, averaging 6+ knots!

Sailing across the Sea of Cortez in the dead of night, and Jim wakes me during his night shift to point this out! Pretty amazing, with no light pollution we could clearly see the SpaceX Rocket shooting off into space. Tell you what though - I am glad some friends had already shown us pictures of this, otherwise I would've been a bit freaked out! 🚀🛸

A great clinic day in Juncalito with Jeremiah during his visit. We saw 36 animals, the community is very small so it was a great turn out. We treated animals for a variety of conditions including ear and eye problems, and gave free vaccinations and flea/worming/tick prevention medicine. It was a huge team effort with ex-pats, local community members and our amazing extended Chuffed crew (looking at all our patrons and donators) all coming together to make it happen - so thank you all! Chiquita Romero and I bonding during a nail trim... 'Fear Free' is a technique used in veterinary practice to reduce the stress and anxiety our patients feel during procedures. I try to apply this technique for all my patients, and it looks different for each of them, but it often involves as 'minimal restraint' as possible and prioritizing the things that need to be done (and let's be honest a fair bit of baby puppy talk...)
Chiquita Romero is a sweet little girl, who lives in a very remote town, she is one of 4 dogs in the entire community! Needless to say she hasn't been handled by veterinarians a lot, so I opted for a cuddle approach rather than 'restraining' her for her nail trim. I popped Chiquita on my lap and after a few minutes of cuddles started her nail trim. I began with the back nails as it is generally better tolerated, she promptly fell asleep... I then moved on to her front nails and she sat there like the sweet little angel she is! I also love that she has a first and last name - Chiquita Romero of San Cosme!

We threw Jeremiah in the deep end (figuratively of course...) one his first clinic day with us. We visited a small town called Juncalito after hearing from one of our Patrons there was a great need for veterinary care in the area. In just a few hours we vaccinated, wormed, checked over and treated almost 40 animals! Jeremiah was able to give check ups, vaccinations and learn about how we operate... which is pretty much a go with the flow-type vibe while working fast and hard! @thrujeremiahseyes

Meet Jeremiah - @thrujeremiahseyes - our very first vet student on Chuffed! We have been saying we have wanted to take students and volunteers for years, but the boat was always a little rough (imagine me throwing the stairs around swearing trying to get to the broken down engine in front of anyone bar Jim and the camera...) and we thought we might not have enough space... but even at 6ft-something Jeremiah fit in just fine! Jokes aside, it was really great to have him on board and you will be seeing plenty more of him in upcoming posts as we get to work delivering free vet care!

Spaying just one dog can make such a huge difference. This momma dog had 3 female pups, those 3 female pups will all be able to have pups of their own within a year... and the mum could get pregnant once or even twice in that time... with 3 more female pups each time... each having pups of their own. In a few short years the number of dogs grows and grows. This mum has since been spayed and vaccinated, and the pups received their first checks up, worming, vaccinations and have gone to loving homes. We are Chuffed knowing that we make a difference with what we do, and we couldn't do it without all of you - so THANK YOU!
