Is your pet acting unusually sluggish? 🤔

Lethargy can be more than just a lazy day for your pet. It could be a sign of heart problems.

If your pet is unusually tired, less playful, or reluctant to exercise, it might be time to check their heart health. 🐾❤️

Regular vet visits can help catch heart issues early. Always monitor your pet for any changes in energy levels and consult your vet if something feels off.

Stay vigilant, keep your furry friends healthy, and enjoy every moment with them! 🐶🐱

🐾 Attention Cat Lovers! 🐾

Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy (HCM) is the most common heart disease in cats, and it can significantly impact their survival and quality of life. Unfortunately, there are no cures for this genetically-based condition at the moment. 😿

Screening for HCM is crucial for the long-term health and well-being of our feline friends. It’s also essential for cat breeders who want to maintain the health of their breeding lines. Identifying carriers and avoiding breeding them is one hopeful strategy to benefit the overall breed health. Early detection allows us to optimize treatment for affected patients. 🙌

Calling all cat owners! We are excited to announce that the HALT HCM Study is launching in our area and OVC is honored to be serving as a participating study site. Owners of diagnosed HCM cats can register interest in participating in the study by e-mailing us at [email protected]. You can also register interest at www.hcmincats.com.

TriviumVet®, an animal health research and development company focused on addressing unmet needs in companion animal medicine, are launching the HALT Study, a pivotal study to determine the effectiveness of TRIV202 in managing left ventricular hypertrophy associated with feline subclinical Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy (HCM) over 12 months. After extensive consultation with the FDA TriviumVet have been granted concurrence on the HALT Study design which allows the study to commence recruitment of eligible cats. The HALT Study will be taking place in the below cardiac care centers across the US, with more to be added over time. As new HALT study sites are added they will be updated on hcmincats.com.

The HALT Study is a blinded, randomized, placebo-controlled pivotal trial. The study is seeking 300 cats diagnosed with subclinical HCM (stage B1 or B2) to participate for a 12-month treatment period. Cats that meet the eligibility criteria will be under the care of a board-certified cardiologist for the study duration. All study visits are provided to the owner free of charge.

At first sight, we were in love! Dr. Maran and Angie were determined to get a cute picture with Mowgli. He posed like a prince at first, but you can watch the absolute failure that ensued as he said, "I did my photo...what does Angie have back here for me?" 😄👑

Mowgli knows he's the boss when it comes to photoshoots. Watch the hilarious attempts and enjoy the cuteness that only he can control! 😂❤️

We seriously tried! 😝

🤩🥳Celebrating Scout's Journey Post-LAD Surgery! 🐾🏖️

We're overjoyed to share an incredible update from Scout's family! After undergoing Left Atrial Decompression (LAD) surgery just over a month ago, Scout is thriving and enjoying life to the fullest. 🌟

Scout used to face frequent and costly ICU visits every 10-14 days due to refractory congestive heart failure (CHF). At each visit, it was expensive and the odds he would go home continued to decrease.

Today, he’s a transformed pup, brimming with energy and happiness. His mom shared some wonderful words with us, capturing the essence of his remarkable recovery:

🦄💝 "Since the LAD surgery, Scout has been growing stronger and happier! He is more interested in walks and social activities. He is settling back into a nice routine without the panic and stress he was experiencing during his months of refractory CHF."

Scout’s breathing rates are now well below 30, with no signs or symptoms of CHF. Although we are still managing elevated kidney test results and transitioning him to a renal diet, the reduction in his medication (working to protect his kidneys) was only possible because of this novel procedure. We will continue to aim to stabilize his kidney values. 🩺

🦄💝 "This surgery has given us a life that is close to normal. I am cherishing every wonderful moment with Scout. I thank you so much for the work that you do and for bringing this procedure to the PNW."

Scout recently enjoyed a beach picnic with his mom, one of his favorite activities. Seeing him so happy and full of life is a testament to the impact of the LAD surgery. 🌊🧺

While LAD isn’t a cure for valve disease, it has given Scout a new lease on life. At OVC, we’re proud to have performed numerous LAD surgeries, and we continue to aim to help even more pets in need.

If your furry friend is struggling with heart issues, know that we’re here to provide advanced care and support. 🐶💕

We adore those charming Dachshunds trotting into our clinic! But did you know this breed is prone to a heart condition called Mitral Valve Disease (MVD)? While MVD can affect many dogs, Dachshunds are particularly vulnerable, often developing it earlier in life and progressing more rapidly.

But here's the silver lining: early detection and treatment can make a world of difference for your Dachshund's well-being!

Our veterinary team recommends annual heart health check-ups (exams and auscultations at minimum by your trusted primary care veterinary team), but additional diagnostics may include X-rays, ECGs, or echocardiograms, tailored to your dog's results and individual risk factors.

In the meantime, stay vigilant for signs like coughing, lethargy, or difficulty breathing.

Spotting heart disease early allows us to intervene promptly with medication, providing your furry friend with a longer, happier life! Ready to schedule an evaluation? Contact OVC today at 425.409.1545, Option 4. 💖🐾

🐾✨ Fun with Fritz! ✨🐾

This week, we had the absolute pleasure of seeing Fritz for a recheck of his Ambulatory Monitor (sometimes called a Holter Monitor). Fritz is one of the most beautiful and sweetest Bernese Mountain Dogs you could ever meet! ❤️🐶 Despite battling a tough arrhythmia that's required extensive workup and screening for cancer and infectious disease (none found, yay!), Fritz remains a bundle of joy and energy. Angie and Dr. Maran tried REALLY hard to get him to lay on his side...but he told us 'belly rubs' instead! 😉

Attaching his monitor took a lot longer than usual (but honestly, you can't blame us for the delay here...it's really his fault for being so cute!) 🎉

Our ambulatory monitors record 48 hours of non-stop electrical activity of the heart. This helps us quantify the number of normal vs. abnormal heartbeats, associate arrhythmias with clinical signs like weakness or collapse, or determine if they're normal responses to activity. 🩺📈

Fritz's monitor was removed late this week, and now it's time for us to analyze the data – roughly 100,000 heartbeats per day! It's a lot of work - but we're on a mission to figure out if his condition is controlled or if his medical therapy needs adjustments. 🧐💡

The key question an ambulatory monitor answers is: how bad is it? It doesn't often answer "why is it happening?" which is why detailed diagnostics are so essential. We've already seen him for his examination, echocardiogram, and first monitor study.
We've been closely collaborating with his primary care veterinary team for lab tests, abdominal ultrasound, and more, to get this handsome man in tip-top shape! 🐾❤️

If your pet has episodes of collapse, weakness, or is a breed particularly at risk for arrhythmogenic diseases (Boxers and Dobermans, we're looking at you!), know our entire team is here to help.

🐾 Understanding Pericardial Effusion 🐾

This month, we're focusing on a condition called Pericardial Effusion in dogs.

🐶Who this Affects:

Pericardial effusion can affect dogs of all breeds, sizes, and ages. However, certain breeds, such as Golden Retrievers, Boxers, and Great Danes, may be predisposed to this condition. It's essential for all dog owners to be aware of the signs and symptoms, regardless of their pet's breed.

👀 What to Look For:

Watch out for symptoms such as difficulty breathing, coughing, weakness, collapse, or abdominal swelling. These signs may indicate that your dog is experiencing discomfort or distress due to pericardial effusion.

Regular veterinary check-ups, including heart screenings, can help detect this condition. As always, timely intervention and management will improve your pet's quality of life.

Is your dog's cough just a cough? 🤔

Don't ignore those persistent barks and wheezes!

While it might seem harmless, coughing that is deep, harsh, or persistent could signal a more serious health issue. It could be anything from respiratory conditions to infections to allergies or even heart-related issues.

Keep an ear out and consult your vet if you notice anything unusual. Your pup's health is worth it! 🐶💕❤️
