Starting on August 1, all dogs entering the U.S. (including those that left the U.S. and are returning, and regardless of the country they are coming from) must be:
• healthy upon arrival
• at least 6 months of age
• microchipped
• accompanied by a CDC Dog Import Form receipt and required vaccination and veterinary documents.

Additional requirements may apply depending on where the dog has been in the last 6 months and whether or not the dog was vaccinated in the United States.

Use CDC’s Q&A tool (the CDC “DogBot”) to determine what rules apply to your dog: https://bit.ly/2rww2bq

Nolan was surrendered to us this past month due to an inability to be cared for. Pet ownership is not merely providing food/water/shelter. This friendly feline was considered “special needs” by his former owner because he had on/off soft stool secondary to parasites she did not appropriately treat for 3 years ago when I last saw him after he was adopted the first time. Today, he found his forever home. Congratulations Nolan! Keep lookin’ cool with your new owner!

Where are my bully people?!?? This gentleman was relinquished to us today. New life, new name! Help me name him! Anyone work from home and need a walking/running buddy? Anyone want to spend time with him in the meantime and help me exercise him? Anyone want to donate a bag of adult proplan or money towards his care/fostering? I just couldn’t euthanize him for a person that simply didn’t have the time he needs 😞….

When you do not have a vet willing to squeeze you in for emergency….when no vet is willing to take you on if you have never been to their office before….when there are no vets LEFT to take care of any of the pets because they have all left the field, they have no staff or they have committed su***de, ask yourself why that is? No, you all know why that is and it’s a damn shame!

This person is NOT the client, but a family member. The client was NOT a client and never will be again. I offered to squeeze her in early even though the pet has been sick since the week before and even though I was still in surgery, hadn’t had lunch or even a potty break all morning. This lovely person was in the car ripping me a new one about the dying cat that he had no vet for as I was trying to diagnose her and save her life. He was upset and I am unprofessional because I charged extra to see the pet when I really didn’t have the space to see the pet early, which means I am diverting my attention from other patients in my care, which also means I am making my regular clients angry because they have to wait and I am depriving my staff of their break as well. Yes, I did ask the owner if she knew the man and as to why I was asking the question. She stated no and I continued on with a smile, a plan of attack and the severity of the situation her cat was in, while also offering referral vs me spending the time trying to save the pet around the clock on a holiday weekend even after the nasty review.

Professionally does NOT mean I will grin and bear the atrocities of today’s society, the audacities of people like this. I will speak up for myself and my colleagues because I AM the best of the best! We are supposed to be the most sympathetic, the most empathetic and people time and time again come at us with emotional blackmail like we are supposed to save every living creature that may or shall cross our path no matter the cost and no matter if people want to pay for the services. Professionalism and empathy does NOT mean it is our duty to take on the burden of all the responsibilities that pet owners fail or desire to take on themselves. Be fu***ng adults! I am tired of the blame game because no one can take any responsibility for themselves or their life decisions. When I close up shop abruptly one day, there will be no mistake that I have simply had enough!

Meet Mason (picture of him is from Today at home). He is ABSOLUTELY patient of the week. This ham-bone is a new patient in our office, but spent the entire weekend with us in critical condition as Dr. Vought worked tirelessly to save his life. He was seen Saturday in “Addisonian crisis.” He is a 1 1/2 years old Cane Corso and was diagnosed with kidney failure when he was having profuse GI upset/vomiting blood/low temp/severe dehydration elsewhere the weekend before. After Dr. Vought reviewed his labs and repeated bloodwork, he was hosp for intensive care and was given a potential different diagnosis, Addison’s disease. Unfortunately because it was the weekend, she was unable to send out the labs for confirmation of Addison’s disease until Monday and if she were wrong, steroid use in kidney failure could kill him. Mason has wonderful owners that put their trust in her and she discussed her diagnosis and the possible outcomes. Mason’s blood pressure was in the gutter, his glucose dropped to 40, and his temp was low, so she collected the blood samples she needed before she started treatment. Mason is back home now starting to play with his sibling and on the road to recovery. What a guy!

Hypoadrenocorticism, aka Addison’s disease, is an underproduction of glucocorticoids (steroids) and mineralocorticoids by the adrenal glands. It is sometimes referred to as the “great pretender” because clinical signs are often nonspecific and can mimic those of other diseases. For patients exhibiting nonspecific clinical signs such as anorexia, lethargy, vomiting, and diarrhea, hypoadrenocorticism should be on the differential diagnosis list until proven otherwise. If the condition becomes serious (sudden weakness, severe vomiting and diarrhea (with or without blood) and sometimes collapse), it is called an addisonian crisis and is considered a medical emergency.

List of bloodwork changes:
Hyperkalemia (increased potassium: can result in arrhythmias/collapse)
Hyponatremia (decrease in sodium)
Hypochloremia (decrease in chloride)
Acidosis (blood turning acidic)
Azotemia (kidney:blood urea nitrogen increase)
Hypoglycemia (low blood sugar, which can cause seizures)
Increased alanine and aspartate aminotransferase levels (increased liver enzymes)
Hypercalcemia (high calcium)
Hypoalbuminemia (low protein)
Hypocholesterolemia (low cholesterol)
Anemia (low red cell count)
Lack of stress leukogram (lymphocytes should be low when the body is stressed/ill)

This disease requires life-long treatment but he should live a happy, healthy life. Mason is one lucky boy. He most likely would not have survived the weekend had he continued to be misdiagnosed. Thank God for his strength and resilience. We ❤️ you, Mason!

February is Dental Awareness Month! Dental care in animals is vital much like it is in people. Dental disease can be very painful and lead to secondary infections/disease in organs like the liver and heart due to chronic swallowing of nasty bacteria and infection getting into the circulation. Don’t just attribute your pet’s slowing down to old age! If he/she is suffering from dental disease, they may have a new lease on life after having a dental. Check out the link for some dental tips!
