Dogs are very capable of having polite and peaceful conversations without interference from humans-have you observed your dog(s) conversations? What did you notice?
Edit to add: if you dog has a history( like my brown and white girl Penelope did) of feeling worried around certain items, some additional steps may be needed to enable conversations like this.

I had the pleasure of gifting an inside/outside Sensory Explorers session to The marvelous Marv, an adoptable dog Mary's Dogs recently.
It’s difficult to fully describe fully how sweet, soft and kind this lovely boy is, he’s a melt when stroked kind of guy❤️.
Marv definitely gains comfort and support from his human, and his curiosity is increased with his humans quiet presence.
Reach out to Mary's Dogs for more information about this lovely boy.

What a treat to have housemates Charlie and Stella for an indoor/outdoor session.
Charlie is the newer member of the family and has been forming relationships with his human and canine family.
Developing feelings of safety and feeling supported in the environment, with others and within oneself is the priority. That’s important for ALL🥰.
Sensory Explorers sessions provide the time, space and choices to assist with growing that feeling of safety. SLOW, no rushing, time to think, process information, without pressure.
Stella, Charlie and family have been setting a foundation for many peaceful years together❤️

Sweet Biggs came back for another Sensory Explorers session. He has a complex medical history that requires a good deal of care and attention from his human family, yet he maintains his curious nature🥰
His session was modified for his individual needs-a bit shorter than planned and included some garden time-looking forward to finishing up his session soon❤️.

Orion, a beautiful adoptable dog withMary's Dogs came in for a Sensory Explorers session this week.
Orion appreciates time and space to explore in his own way, and made his preferences clear 🥰
We did a bit of changing of the environment( removal of an item ) to support him and were quietly available in a way that suited his needs!
If you want more information on Orion, reach out to Mary’s Dogs, he’s looking for his own special family❤️.

Special visitors for an outside Sensory Explorers session -Dakota , 15 years and housemate Gilly.
Dakota and Gilley have their own private sniff spot at home, but having an opportunity to explore safe novel environments helps keeps brains and bodies engaged, curious and healthy.
Freedom to move the body, explore or avoid areas and objects of their choosing promotes relaxation, confidence and wellbeing.
I visited 2 places yesterday that are new to me-a garden center and a market-so very interesting, so much novelty and things to be curious about! Taking it all in was fascinating and at the end , yes tiring. I had people I love with me and that certainly enhanced the experience, just being together, though they never told me how I should behave, what pace to go or what to be interested in-can you relate this to how you might “share”a new experience or environment with your dogs?
Thank you for the visit and another wonderful chance to observe dogs🥰

Prepping for a fund raising event tonight, Dog Days of Summer with David Rosenfelt to benefit Mary's Dogs and https://servicedogsnh.org/ in cooperation withGolden Dog Adventure Co. at Mall at Fox Run this evening.
I’ll be bringing Sensory Explorers mini sessions for dogs to experience a multi sensory environment-supporting choice, wellbeing and increased confidence.
Multi sensory enriched environments encourage thoughtful movement( benefitting the dog physically through lateral movement, focus on of core stabilizing muscles, proprioceptive and vestibular engagement, and stretching nose to tail).
A dogs natural curiosity comes to the fore and mental and sensory stimulation occurs.
Observing our dogs in multi sensory environments is an excellent opportunity to gather detailed information about the individuals preferences, movement patterns and more subtle body language.
Safety is always a first and as such a focus is providing stable footing , avoiding tripping hazards or objects of unsafe height.
Individual sessions allow the dog to experience an increased feeling of emotional safety without worry of others encroaching on their personal space or feeling time pressure.
Exploration in enriched environments has been shown in studies to elevate overall mood and decrease the experience of pain or discomfort in the body.

Rocket, a gorgeous Mary's Dogs adoptable pup, came by for a session recently.
Rocket , with the comforting presence of Penelope Potato , sniffed ,explored rolled in the grass, and romped in his outdoor session. He wasn’t quite ready for the indoor room, and we respected his choices.
We all ( humans and dogs)need individual amounts of support , time and space to learn and thrive. Have you ever experienced the feeling of being forced to do something before you were ready? Alternately have you experienced the support of a trusted friend while facing something a bit challenging?
Rocket looks to his friends for social cues of safety , so similar to how we gain support from our trusted community.
Hoping to see Rocket again soon!
P.S. Rocket borrowed a beautiful https://canuzzo.com/dog-harness/ for his session

Little Sunday back for her second Inside Outside Sensory Explorers session.
After her exploration outside,we could see such a difference in her confidence from the
last session-she led us right to the door and strolled in! We had the opportunity to work out what the “just right” amount of support was, and when she was finished with her session.
We even had a bit of time to help Sunday enter her vehicle( well, her guardians vehicle😉) at her pace without having to physically place her in . A marvelous session all around🥰. Stay tuned for more of Sunday in the future!

so many ways we should assist and support our animals before/or even if we turn to training.

Three wonderful dogs from the same family came for Sensory Explorers Sessions, a perfect time to observe the differences in their preferences, approach to novelty and to support what they needed to feel safe and relaxed!
We have so many opportunities to support our dogs and help them feel a sense of safety just by the simple act of slowing down, observing, and allowing the time they need to make their own choices.
We can set aside our expectations, be flexible and allow our dogs to lead, after all, they know best how they feel and what they need in a particular moment. Yes, safety is always at the forefront of everything we do, but within safety-a multitude of choices can be made, shared , explored and supported🥰.
Thank you for sharing your beautiful dogs with me Kim!

Just a few of the recent visitors to Sensory Explorers!
Each dog has differences in their genetic makeup-but they also share so much in common-their need to feel safe and secure, their curiosity to learn about the environment they find themselves in, the need for social support from their human, their need to express themselves and be responded to appropriately.
While it’s good to know how/why/for what goal we humans have manipulated dogs through selective breeding, we must bear in mind that first and foremost, they are all dogs, and beyond being dogs and particular breeds/breed combinations-they are as unique and individual as we are!

When you slow down , you can notice the little things, there is delight in the little things❤️

This adorable little 6-7 month old fella came in for a consultation recently, what a delightful visit!
Lifestyle, communication , relationship and meeting needs , not training ,was the focus-as is often the case.
So many struggles perceived by the human part of the family can be improved, if not completely resolved through modifications and changes ( including changing our expectations)we humans make, whether it is change in nutrition, how we communicate, the set up of our homes, social opportunities, the right kind and amount of exercise etc.
I think it’s easy to be impressed by very fancy or complex procedures, scientific terminology( and yes understanding that has its place), but we sometimes miss the most beautiful and simple things that are at the foundation of sharing our lives together-being together, wandering a path together, sharing a curious nature, affording grace to each other, speaking with each other, caring and loving each other.
This little one has a lifetime ahead of him with his devoted human family , I’m happy to share part of that🥰

Sensory Explorers sessions, so much more than a opportunity for your dog to engage in species appropriate behaviors with choice , agency and safety-all necessary and wonderful things. Because of my education as a Dynamic Dog Practitioner and Foundational Postural Specialist-Galen Myotheraphy Trained, I may highlight concerns that need further investigation-how your dog uses their body, position of limbs, cost disturbances, preferred gate, topline( their back), head position, ear set, muscular asymmetry etc. I may point out direction and speed the dog moves around the room, interaction or avoidance of items or surfaces, etc. As a Nordic Dog Trainer and Behavior Specialist, we may discuss any concerns you have about your dogs behavior-and how or if physical discomfort, home environment, and general lifestyle may affect those behaviors and whether a full consultation may be warranted. I may discuss calming signals-the dogs language. We might discuss our own body language and responses to your dog as a factor in the dogs behavior. We observe to learn, and learn to observe❤️

From the littles to the tall and leggy-beautiful Sierra in for a Sensory Explorers session recently🥰. Every nook and cranny was investigated and when Sierra was ready to end the session, we accommodated that!( next time -if the mud and weather cooperate, we can continue with a bit of outdoor sniff about). It is vitially important to not just recognize, but respond respectfully to our dogs communication and opinions. Had we ignored Sierras request to finish, her next visit may not be so relaxed if she felt forced in any way🥰. A recent paper review in a group I’m a member of , run by the amazing PhD Lisa Dickel Tiny science chat journal club, we looked at welfare and defining “sucess” for dogs. We humans may have a very different idea of what is sucess with dogs-do what we ask, get closer to something etc. but I’d say Sierra’s ability to communicate her needs was a sucess, and the next time she tells us what she needs-she will feel safe to do so and have increased trust that the humans around will listen❤️
Dogs are a social species. Social animals need the company of conspecifics-in this case other dogs, to communicate in a shared language, learn about and from each other, explore together, be together. While there may be instances because of prior learning, traumatic events, lack of appropriate early experiences , health concerns etc that make being with other dogs a challenge, it’s worth our time and effort to help those individuals develop relaxed relationships with at least one other trusted friend. I’m not talking about highly arousing activities -all play all the time-dogs can be together in many ways, exploring, resting together, searching together, sleeping, communicating, negotiating differences, a bit of play. We can and will be part of that picture to varying degrees at different times-sometimes as an observer, a participant, or a helper, if we learn about the dogs natural communication and needs. What kind of opportunities are you providing, or working toward to help your dog navigate relationships with other dogs? What is your focus when dogs are together with friends?
Thank you Pet Supplies Plus - Somersworth, NH for hosting Sensory Explorers as part of the Love Your Pet Event today. Thank you to all of the participants for sharing your gorgeous dogs and a bit of their stories with me, they all had their own unique ways of engaging in the multi sensory environment. I love to see the pups not only exploring , but seeking out their human for connection🥰 Thank you to Sarah Shinn for your help today-much appreciated ❤️ If you’d like to schedule a private Sensory Explorers session, a Dynamic Dog Assessment, or need help with a training struggle, email [email protected]
Gus was in for a Sensory Explorers session recently. He has been on some restrictions due to healing from an injury and his lovely human thought a session would be of benefit to him. I’d say the session was beneficial to both human and dog🥰. One of the many things I love about the sessions is the opportunity to learn not only about the dog, but their human as well. We all need connection with others. Both humans and dogs are social species and being together in a relaxed, no pressure setting allows time to listen , share and learn. Listening to understand allowed us to change gears a bit and continue our session outside, to recognize Gus’ barking , not as a problem to be stopped, but as communication of a need❤️. If we start from a point of curiosity instead of judgement, we are more likely to take the time to ask the whys🥰
Marci, Cody and Slone’s Sensory Explorers sessions show beautifully how any age from puppy through to the senior can enjoy and benefit from enriched environments. Coming back to safety-your quiet presence as your dogs secure attachment/base as part of the environment, being available to your pup, without being intrusive allows your dog to explore as they choose with the knowledge that you are there if they need you. Dogs spend so much of their short lives( I would venture to say to much)taking direction from us. Having the ability to exercise choice and agency, approach, avoid, move their bodies as they choose, with their trusted human available as needed, has a great impact on well being. These 3 gorgeous dogs had the confidence to make their own choices with the knowledge that you were there with them!
