Does anyone know this dog’s owner? Her name is Bella. She was found in downtown SLC near Rio Grande. This is the area where we do our outreaches and where our unsheltered clients spend time. The dog has a rabies tag from 2018 issued at one of our vaccine clinics. No owner info on file. Dog is safe and contained.

We'd like to provide some insight and an update. We receive a massive number of requests for vet care. Our priorities are pet food and to encourage responsible pet ownership by facilitating low-cost spay/neuter and vaccine options.

We work with a nonprofit vet partner. Our medical funds are limited. The important services the vet provides to those of us in animal welfare is invaluable. They are booked out usually 2-weeks for appointments. We have had an ongoing issue with people we generously book appointments for and help sponsor bills for not showing up for appointments. The vet has been charging us for those no-shows, which they have every right and expectation to do for the wasted time and holes in their schedules. We have instituted a $25 hold fee, which EVERY request for medical help will need to pay via Venmo BEFORE we set an appointment. That fee is not refundable. We are a very small volunteer-only organization. We receive at least 40-50 requests a month for vet visits. There is no way to help everyone, but we certainly aren't throwing money away because people don't show up!

This will be a challenge for the people we serve. Our director was just told off (again) by someone who felt we should cover the entire visit for her dog. Our vet partner has a waiting list of rescues and shelters with animals needing to be seen. We are grateful for all they do, and we won't cause them to lose revenue and waste time.

Thank you for understanding the tough position we are in. Street Dawg Crew has three officers running the organization. We also work full-time. We have ZERO income from Street Dawg Crew. Our pet food pantry is entirely free. We can only help as long as we have funds available to do so, which means we make tough decisions every day.

We appreciate those who support us, encourage us, donate, and volunteer with us.

During this blazing hot summer, if there is no grass available to walk your dog on, old socks can be used to save them from having raw paw pads from the hot sidewalk and asphalt. Be kind to your dog.

Dear Street Dawg Crew Community,

We are writing to share some bittersweet news with you. After 9 years of dedicated service to Street Dawg Crew of Utah, our Founder, Margie Varela, has made the decision to retire.

Margie has been an integral part of our organization, sharing her passion, dedication, and expertise with so many people. Her energy and commitment have played an enormous role in advancing our mission and making a positive impact in the lives of the pets and people we serve.

Margie has spent thousands of hours as our president collecting and bagging food, dropping off supplies, arranging vet visits, vaccinations, spay/neuter appointments, and tirelessly giving of her time and energy to fill a much-needed service for our unsheltered friends with animals.

The numbers Margie has served is staggering. To give you an idea of the last 9 years her impact has made, Street Dawg Crew of Utah provided:

o Over 500,000 pounds of pet food
o 2,000 animal vaccinations
o 350 spay/neuter appointments
o Served over 10,000 families
o Pet food and pet supplies to over 20,000 animals

While we are sad to see Margie retire, we are happy to celebrate her many contributions and accomplishments. We will be forever thankful for her big heart, unwavering commitment to our cause, and for the thousands of volunteer hours she has contributed.

We are committed to ensuring a smooth transition and maintaining the momentum of Street Dawg Crew. We will be at Pioneer Park handing out pet food on June 9, 2024, from 12-1 pm as per our usual schedule. Nothing will change in our scheduling or location for outreach.

Please join us in expressing our heartfelt gratitude to Margie for her many years of service and wishing her all the best as she begins her well-earned retirement. We invite you to share your messages, memories, and well wishes for Margie below.

Thank you, Margie, for your dedication, passion, and leadership. You will be deeply missed, and your legacy will continue to inspire us for years to come!!!

We love you!

Trachelle, Amy, Tracy
