This is for you! A really common mistake we make with stranger-reactive dogs is letting people come up to them and feed them treats or try to pet them. Before I was a trainer, I did it with my stranger-reactive dog too. That’s the story of his first bite to a person. 🤦🏼‍♀️⁣

So don’t do it. It’s not usually helpful, especially in the early stages. For some dogs, this (or some variation of this) MIGHT be part of the training plan later on, but first teach your dog to feel safe, build coping skills, learn their body language, teach neutrality around strangers, some basic obedience skills — there are so many things I’d do first. ⁣

Reactivity is nuanced, so I always recommend working with a trainer, and this is where I remind you that I offer both in-person and online 1-1 training for reactivity. ⁣😉

How much would it impact your life (and your dog’s) to have that reactivity gone? ⁣

What sets my Reactive Dog Class apart?⁣

I’ve lived with reactive dogs, so I get it—the challenges, the frustration, and the need for a tailored approach. I understand that what works for one dog might not work for another. That’s why I don’t rely on generic methods like scatter feeding or simply focusing on calmness, which often backfire.⁣

This class runs for 10 weeks, giving you the chance to deep dive into different strategies and practice with real-world scenarios during field trips. ⁣

Plus, with only 2 dogs per class, you won’t be overwhelmed by a large group. It’s all about creating the best learning experience for both you and your dog.⁣

How do I do Puppy Class differently? ⁣

This is truly a class for puppies, not adolescent dogs, so the focus is on socialization and not formal training. ⁣

Each week you’ll be given a Socialization Challenge for the chance to win a fun prize for your puppy. ⁣

No long, boring classes here - I know your puppy has the attention span of a gnat, and I know you’re excited to dive in to the fun socialization stuff! This is truly a class designed especially for puppies! It’s also open-enrollment, so you can join anytime!⁣

I do classes a bit differently. ⁣

The typical group class has 8-10 dogs and lasts 4-6 weeks. You learn a little bit about a few different skills, not enough to be helpful, and then class ends and you’re pushed out the door wondering why your dog isn’t as well-behaved as you expected. ⁣

Well, here’s why: 4-6 weeks isn’t enough time to get great results, and it’s hard to get much help in such a crowded class. ⁣

You’ve been led to believe that a short class is all you need, it’ll solve all your problems, and when it doesn’t you’re left feeling frustrated. ⁣

This is where the Good Dog Class comes in. It’s a comprehensive small group class for owners who want to try something outside the box, who are tired of short classes that leave them wanting more. ⁣

You get 12 weeks of class, designed to teach the following skills to a level you can use in real life: pulling on lead, recalls, stay, leave it, jumping on people, and much more! ⁣

So, if this sounds like a good fit, if you’re excited about a really intensive training class, this is for you! Just head to the site to snag your spot for the next class! ⁣

Dog owners have been led to believe that a quick 4-week puppy class is all they need or a single private training is plenty! ⁣⁣
⁣⁣
The truth is, owners need so much more help and support than that. Training isn’t quick. It’s a process, a journey, and it takes time. So no, a single session or a short puppy class isn’t enough. And then owners are left struggling and frustrated, because they’ve done the training they were supposed to and it isn’t helping. ⁣⁣
⁣⁣
I want to really help you, to offer support and training for longer so we can see great progress and not just do a few sessions and you’re left high and dry. ⁣⁣
⁣⁣
This is where my new Good Dog Program comes in. It’s a comprehensive 1-1 training program to give you the help and support and time that you deserve. It’s for owners who want to try something outside the box, who are tired of short packages that leave them wanting more. ⁣

Here’s what you get: ⁣⁣
• 10 private training sessions over 5 months⁣
• 5 full months of help and support⁣
• bespoke, written training plan⁣
• a fun, customized Good Dog Starter Kit ⁣
⁣⁣
So, if this sounds like it’s right up your alley, if you’re excited about a really intensive training program just for you and your dog, this is for you.

All you have to do is schedule your FREE phone call, we’ll chat to see if we’re a great fit, and then we’ll go from there! ⁣⁣

As a trainer who specializes in reactivity, who also has high arousal dogs, I fully support the use of play in training, especially reactivity training. And I mean real play, not scatter feeding or scent games. I’m talking tug and chaser toys and play that gets you and your dog breathing hard. ⁣

It is SUCH a powerful tool and one that is highly underutilized for a variety of reasons - one being that we’re told calmness is the answer and play is too exciting. That isn’t true, especially for higher arousal dogs.⁣

If you’re interested in learning more, we can work together 1-1 (in person or virtually) with my Good Dog Program or in my Reactive Dog Class. ⁣

Rules are not mean or aversive. They keep your dog safe and help them know what’s expected of them. Dogs, like people, expect rules. When we start a new job, we like to know what the expectations and rules are. The problem is that owners sometimes feel that if they don’t allow their dog to do whatever they want whenever they want, they’re being mean - they’re not being POSITIVE. ⁣

Puppies are taught rules and expectations from a very young age from mom and littermates. They are also taught fair and appropriate consequences for ignoring those rules. They are comfortable with and capable of understanding and obeying fair, simple rules: you can’t yank me around on leash, you can’t slam into the old dog, you can’t steal the old dog’s bone, you must lie quietly at my feet right now, etc. And yes, you can absolutely teach and enforce rules in a kind way. ⁣

Big problems emerge when we don’t set (and enforce) clear rules for our dogs. For starters, you’ll never have a well-behaved dog or a healthy, balanced relationship. At its core, training is teaching the dog rules or appropriate behaviors. ⁣

Quotes are from the book Finding A Balance by Suzanne Clothier. You can purchase it from her site - suzanneclothier.com and I highly recommend giving it a read. ⁣

05/06/2024

I don’t think daycare is great for most dogs, and I don’t think they’re generally run well. Dogs are usually packed in, often stressed, usually highly aroused, and just left to their own devices for hours. ⁣

This isn’t ideal. Dogs practice bullying each other, spend the day fearful and anxious, practice out of control behavior around other dogs, learn to p*e inside, and learn that other dogs are either the greatest thing ever or the worst. Looking at photos of dogs in daycare on social media, most appear incredibly stressed or far too aroused. This is not the way you want your dog to feel all day. ⁣

I’m sure there are some good ones, but they’re few and far between. I don’t think daycare is a substitute for spending time with your dog, and many dogs would much prefer to spend the day dozing on the couch than stuck at daycare. ⁣

I’ve seen so many dogs develop behavior problems from daycare and so many dogs’ behavior dramatically improve when daycare stopped. ⁣

I’ve had many clients who swore their dogs were doing great in daycare - even the staff said so! When we reviewed video of their dog “doing great” in daycare, it rarely reveals that. It usually shows their dog is either stressed and tense, spending all day trying to keep other dogs away, or far too overstimulated and practicing rude and out of control behavior all day. ⁣

Want to do daycare anyway? I would recommend 1-2 half or full days a week, no more. ⁣

Here are some red flags to watch for: ⁣
🚩not providing photos and videos of your dog playing ⁣

🚩not providing a tour of the facility so you can see where your dog will be ⁣

🚩your dog seeming stressed or nervous on drop off or pickup ⁣

🚩dogs wearing collars/harnesses during play ⁣

🚩staff not having treats to reward dogs ⁣

🚩inadequate staff - only one person working at a time, dogs playing unsupervised ⁣

🚩staff yanking dogs around on their collars, yelling at dogs, hitting dogs, etc ⁣

Have you had a good or bad experience with daycare? ⁣

Adolescent dogs are rough. To be perfectly blunt, they’re emotional, impulsive, smart idiots who can try your absolute last nerve. ⁣

Across the board, adolescence is a developmental stage riddled with conflict and changes in the brain. If your adolescent dog is driving you nuts, it’s normal! ⁣

But it will pass, and training, exercise, and sufficient rest can help. ⁣Hang in there!

Quotes are from the paper The Adolescent Brain by BJ Casey, Rebecca Jones, and Todd Hare published in Annals of the New York Academy of Sciences. ⁣

It’s so maddening that people just keep mindlessly spreading bad info that’s harming dogs and harming owners. ⁣

Yes, parvo is a risk, but it’s a risk whether you socialize your puppy or attend puppy class or not. ⁣

If you want to give your puppy the very best chance at a great life? Socialize them before 12 weeks. Research shows not only how important early socialization is for your puppy, but that it’s safe. ⁣

[Journal of the American Animal Hospital Association, Frequency of CPV infection in vaccinated puppies that attended puppy socialization classes, 2013]⁣

A lot of people get socialization very wrong. If you want a dog who can settle at your feet while you have a beer on the patio of a brewery or you want a dog who can walk calmly through a crowded farmers market, then your focus should be on making things neutral rather than exciting or fun. ⁣⁣
⁣⁣
⁣⁣
For example, socializing to people should involve more quiet observation rather than lots of pets and greetings from new people. And calm praise and feedback from the owner rather than high-pitched, excited praising and “Yes!!” and constant treats. ⁣⁣
⁣⁣
New people are not exciting. They’re no big deal. They’re neutral. We can take it or leave it. Because if new people are exciting, you’ve now got a dog who shrieks and pulls toward new people - who is focused on greeting everyone, who can’t relax or pay attention to you if new people are around. ⁣⁣
⁣⁣
I see so many people wanting to make everything exciting for their puppies and then ending up with a dog who indeed thinks everything is super exciting. Those aren’t easy dogs to live with. ⁣⁣
⁣⁣

People have got to stop waiting until vaccines are complete to socialize them. ⁣

It is too late. They’ve missed the window where learning societal norms is easy. I get emails and messages DAILY from people saying their 3-5-month-old dog is already aggressive, reactive, or fearful. Because they have not socialized. And now it’s too late. That dog’s life will never be what it could have been with proper socialization. ⁣

The socialization period for puppies is 3-12 weeks. Their brain development is not going to wait for vaccinations. Research shows, and behavior vets say, it’s perfectly safe to socialize before 20-24 weeks when vaccines are done. ⁣

Puppy Class starts Sunday. Join us to start training and socializing and give your puppy the best chance at a great life. ⁣

Happy birthday to my big, doofy Scottish boy! Oak turns 1 today, and it’s been a wild ride with him! He’s full of energy, a relentless pest, a wonderful cuddler, and overall a very good boy. He loves his flirt pole, fetch, and attacking the hose. ⁣

Hi! Quick little intro post, mostly to say that the new and improved classes are starting very soon and you don’t wanna miss out! ⁣

Out and about classes allow you to train in the real world, not a quiet, empty building. Learn how to deal with and train around real-life distractions - kids on bikes, runners, other dogs, cars, ducks, squirrels, etc! Each week class will be held in a new location to keep things fun! ⁣

Join Puppy Class or Level 1 class to learn really cool stuff, like settle, sit, come, loose leash walking, leave it, attention, and much more! ⁣

Or if classes aren’t your jam, let’s work together 1-1! ⁣

Check out the website for the details. Link in bio. ⁣

I got two herding breeds knowing full well they’d be energetic, highly aroused, bitey, barky little demons. I knew and it’s still exhausting. ⁣

Don’t get a dog because you think the breed is cool. Get a dog who will fit your lifestyle. Have kids and always have a full house? Get a dog who is unbothered by a house full of kids and who won’t kill another dog when the front door inevitably gets left open. ⁣

Be realistic about how much time and energy and money you have to commit to a dog. Be realistic about what you need your dog to do, and then pick accordingly. ⁣

Happiest birthday to my favorite little monster 🩷 She’s everything I love in a dog - smart, sassy, bossy, happy, and always up for an adventure! ⁣

It’s been fun watching her grow and find her confidence this past year, learning all of her likes (chasing leaves and bossing Oak around) and dislikes (baths). She’s certainly not easy, but she pushes me to be better. ⁣

Olive & her favorite brother, Ford. They’re always happy to see each other, and it’s so sweet how well they get along. It’s fun to see their similarities and differences.⁣

These photos from .cattledogs sum up their personalities perfectly: Ford calm and collected and Olive spazzy and wild. ⁣

This will sound strange coming from a reward-based trainer, but punishment is not necessarily a bad thing. It can be a useful way to decrease behavior. ⁣

Don’t get me wrong, I don’t use or encourage shock/choke/prong collars, and I don’t encourage hurting your dog. But there’s so much more to punishment than that.

So even if you think you don’t punish your dogs, I bet you do!⁣

I punish Oak for incessantly barking in my face and dropping toys on my lap by putting his toys up when he won’t stop. I know it’s an effective punishment because he’s doing that behavior less and less.⁣

I punished puppy Olive for resource guarding my bed from puppy Oak by putting her on the floor every time she growled at him. It was an effective punishment and worked quickly because she likes being on the bed. ⁣

It didn’t hurt them. It didn’t scare them. They were not scarred or traumatized. It’s still a punishment because it decreased behavior. ⁣

Punishment isn’t a dirty word, and you can effectively use punishment without hurting your dog. Remember, punishment is simply something that decreases the behavior. That’s it. ⁣

23/04/2024

My biggest frustration is undersocialized dogs who are reactive and aggressive and out of control. Because I know these dogs will never have the life they could have had. They were not given the same opportunity to grow and thrive, and it isn’t their fault. They were kept isolated and not exposed to anything until it was too late to matter. ⁣They are more likely to be trained punitively, more likely to be rehomed, and less likely to get the same exercise and experiences in life.

Socialize your puppy! And do it when it matters - before 12 weeks. It will change the course of your dog’s life.

Studies: Arai, Ohtani, Ohta 2011, The Importance of Bringing Dogs In Contact With Children During Their Socialization Period for Better Behavior. ⁣

Two FREE monthly events! ⁣

GROUP WALKS⁣
Dog walks are more fun with friends, and for reactive dogs it can be hard to find safe people and dogs to practice with. I’ve also found nature walks to be extremely helpful for reactive dogs and just plain fun for all dogs. ⁣

Come and walk with us, whether your dog is reactive or friendly, young or old. ⁣

• Coming up this Sat at 10 am. ⁣

DOG PARK MEETUPS⁣
I noticed at the dog park that a lot of people are really intimidated and overwhelmed. They aren’t sure what to do, whether their dog is playing nicely, or how to handle a squabble. Going in a group makes it so much less stressful, and I can help show you the ropes! ⁣

• First Tues of the month at noon. ⁣

Hope to see you there! ⁣

Did I want to go for a run today? Not at all. But I went because Olive loves it. And we both needed it. ⁣

So we ran. And then we explored a new trail on the way back. Got a bit lost, but found amazing views to sit and enjoy. ⁣

We didn’t do a ton of training. Minimal talking. Just walking in companionable silence. We are slowly but surely getting more in sync. I learn about her and she about me. She’s starting to settle into our walks instead of screaming and biting trees and frantically hurling herself against the end of the leash. ⁣

She’s not like Gauge, effortless and easy. She is spicy and bossy and oh so stubborn. The progress is slower than I’d like, but she’s a super fun dog, and the journey and struggles are worth it. ⁣

Together we navigate the crowded park with ease. Stopping to let sprinting children pass, moving over to let a mom with a stroller go by. Here comes a rambunctious dog - let’s stop here and wait til they pass by. ⁣

We move together with ease, not a word being spoken. The slightest hint of leash pressure or shift in my body and he knows to move left, move right, stop and wait, or move along. He stays in heel without being asked.⁣

He is so easy. And I ponder the difference in walking with him versus Olive or Oak, where everything is intense and forced instead of relaxed and easy. ⁣

I realize that we’ve been friends, working together, for nearly 15 years. A decade and a half of training together, learning about each other, loving each other. Of course he’s easy. Our oldest friends are always easy. ⁣
