It's time for another one of our pet spotlights!

Bo and Nox are the two kitties of one of our pet sitters, Ethan! They are both 3 years old and each other's best friend. They both love playing together and eating yummy foods. Nox will only eat the gravy in wet food and avoids any meaty bits, while Bo's favorite treats are quail eggs and non-salted seaweed. Their favorite activities include catching sunbeams and playing with string.

Happy National Feral Cat Day! Today, celebrate by learning more about feral cats, discovering what you can do to help the ones in your community, and appreciating all of your local kitties.

Feral cats are often misunderstood to be stray cats, but there is an important distinction between the two: while stray cats are typically pet cats that are lost or abandoned, feral cats usually have had very little interaction with humans and have been feral from birth. One way to tell the difference is that feral cats will typically run away and avoid humans at all costs, while strays will often be friendly and approach humans on their own. Feral cats will also often have a missing ear tip to signify they have been neutered/spayed. Since feral cats are not socialized to humans, it's important to not take one from their local environment and colony unless absolutely necessary.

However, there are definitely still ways to help the feral cats in your local community! One way is by volunteering or donating to your local Trap-Neuter-Release, or TNR, program. These programs work to safely and humanely neuter and spay any feral cats they can, which help reduces the future population of feral cats. Another option is to provide water and food bowls near where you suspect feral cats to live, especially before and after storms and natural disasters, though it's important to check any local programs to make sure this won't interfere with any of their actions or go against any local laws. Finally, by fixing your own pet cats, you can further help reduce future feral populations.

Meet Luna, one of our pet sitter's cat! Luna is the childhood cat of Asher, and moved with him all the way from Virginia when he first came to Davis to study at UCD. Luna loves cuddling on cold mornings, playing with her kitty friends, and eating catnip. Luna is also polydactyl, which means she has an extra toe on each of her front paws! 🐈
