“Place” kinda day!

The “place” command is used to help teach the dogs to relax and learn patience. The goal is for all of them to lay and take naps while they are on the command - not worrying about anything!

Did you know that using some of our agility equipment can build dogs’ confidence?

Miss Harley is here for our 3 week board and training programs and she is a little nervous at new beginnings. So for her first two days with me, we did a lot of bonding by playing one-on-one and having her in doggy daycare!

She loves playing with other dogs and having her favorite toys around her, so I thought what better way to get her comfortable and more out of her shell than play time in daycare! So with her training, she will have daycare added everyday to help build that confidence everyday!

She is definitely making progress and I’m so excited for her future 🫶

🚨🚨 Training Tip Saturday 🚨🚨

Ever watch your dog grab something they shouldn't and wish you had a magic word to make them release it?

That's where a solid "drop it" comes in handy - and it could save your dog's life.

First, forget the old method of prying things from your dog's mouth. That just teaches them to hold on tighter and potentially guard items. Start by teaching the trade.

When your dog has something safe in their mouth, offer something better. The moment they release the first item, mark that behavior and reward with the better item.

Here's what most people miss:

Practice when your dog hasn't grabbed something forbidden. Use toys, safe items, make it a game.

Build positive associations with releasing items. Gradually increase the value of items they need to drop. Move from toys to bones to food items.

But remember, never practice with unsafe items. In emergency situations, you want a reflexive response.

Training for real life means practicing in real situations. Different rooms, different items, different levels of excitement.

Have FUN 🤩

🚨Doggie Daycare command of the Month - “come” 🚨

The come command is not only the cornerstone of obedience training, but it also can be a lifesaver.

When I give the “come” command I expect the dog to STOP what he/she is doing , and come directly to me. I don’t want to be too picky about the command , so with that being said if they come directly to me and stand, sit, or lay down I would be absolutely happy with that! The motion for command - holding a hand out like a handshake, bending your elbow to pass the hand across your chest, and say dogs name plus “come”.

When starting out with the “come” ALWAYS have a leash or long line connected to help guide or control your pup.

Have FUN teaching or doing the “come” with them. We want them to enjoy coming to you and not being afraid. Make a game out of it once they understand the foundation, play hide and seek.

Tonight in our group class we played a game called Red Light, Green Light. Anytime I said Green they would take their dog into a “heel” and then when I would say Red that means STOP, so they should have their auto “sit”.

We also worked on relaxing on their “place” commands, tonight was such a fun class!

🚨🚨 Training Tip Saturday 🚨🚨

Does your dog lose their mind at the sight of a squirrel? Or maybe turn into a hunting machine when they spot a rabbit?

Let's talk about managing that prey drive while keeping everyone safe. Natural instincts are powerful, we're not trying to eliminate them completely. Instead, we're teaching your dog to control their response to those instincts.

Start with distance. Find your dog's threshold the point where they notice the small animal but can still respond to you.

That will be your training sweet spot. Teach an alternative behavior. "Watch me" or "leave it" gives your dog something else to do instead of chasing.

Reward this choice generously. You're competing with something highly rewarding, so your reinforcement needs to be amazing. Gradually decrease distance as your dog shows control.

This might take weeks or months, that's normal. We're rewiring some pretty ancient instincts here.

We are so exited about all the training that has been happening here at ZPS! Hank, the handsome pup below, just finished his Advanced Board and Train and his owner had nothing but rave reviews! 🤩

Our board and train programs are built with the owner and pet in mind. Monday through Friday your pet will be housed at ZPS and will receive training from Sydney, our Lead Canine Trainer. Every Friday, Sydney will set up a time for you to pick up your furry family member and learn everything he or she has worked on that week. During the weekend it is your responsibility to work on his or her training at home. This process allows for a relationship to be built with your pet, the trainer and most importantly yourself. By involving the owner trough the process, we have found more success in the pet/owner relationship in the end. We have two Board and Train programs here at ZPS consisting of 20-25 days.

If you are interested in more information, please call us at 260-519-0300 or visit our website [email protected]. A huge thank you to Kyla for trusting us with Hank! He was a joy to have and we hope to see him back at ZPS soon! 🐾
