🚨🚨 Training Tip Saturday 🚨🚨
Ever watch your dog grab something they shouldn't and wish you had a magic word to make them release it?
That's where a solid "drop it" comes in handy - and it could save your dog's life.
First, forget the old method of prying things from your dog's mouth. That just teaches them to hold on tighter and potentially guard items. Start by teaching the trade.
When your dog has something safe in their mouth, offer something better. The moment they release the first item, mark that behavior and reward with the better item.
Here's what most people miss:
Practice when your dog hasn't grabbed something forbidden. Use toys, safe items, make it a game.
Build positive associations with releasing items. Gradually increase the value of items they need to drop. Move from toys to bones to food items.
But remember, never practice with unsafe items. In emergency situations, you want a reflexive response.
Training for real life means practicing in real situations. Different rooms, different items, different levels of excitement.
Have FUN 🤩
