Maybe you are fortunate enough to afford to use one of our wonderful local veterinary clinics to have your cat or dog “fixed” but below are over 6000 pets from Robertson County who were transported by either their owners, I Could Have Been Adopted, Eddies Haven, or Critter Fixers to just one of the low cost clinics in neighboring counties. Keep in mind, all of those clinics are from 45 minutes to 1 1/2 hours one way. I can’t understand why more of us in Robertson County don’t jump on the bandwagon to promote and financially support Critter Fixers campaign to bring this very needed service to Robertson County. A way to start is to share this post and Critter Fixer posts and let the public know your thoughts. Thank you.

Rest In Peace Yana Remi.

We regret to inform that Yana Renk, Ukrainian animal advocate, has been found dead.

Her friends and family had been searching for her since February 26. Yana Renk was on her way to feed homeless animals in the Zhytomyr region when her vehicle was shot by a tank.

For more than a decade, Yana Renk led several animal advocacy initiatives in Ukraine.

Just finish gathering statistics for 2021. Eddies Haven sponsored 156 vet visits through our SAVE program, Finding a Companion helped place 10 pets with loving families , and Ounce of Prevention delivered 621 doses of flea, tick, and heart worm preventative. The families we helped provided the food, shelter, and most importantly, the love. Grants and donations made all of it possible...Thank You. BTW, We have a spay/neuter program. Statistics for that are low for one of two reasons: 1. With the current cats and dogs in the OP program all the dogs and cats have been “fixed” unless the vet suggests otherwise. 2. ROBERTSON COUNTY NEEDS TO SUPPORT THE CAMPAIGN TO BRING A SPAY/NEUTER CLINIC HERE!!

This is Eddies Haven on steroids but I am so blessed by individual donations and sponsorships and grants from foundations who support nonprofit animal rescues to be able to help keep dogs and cats with loving families who need financial aid for treating acute or chronic issues for their pets. In addition our Ounce of Prevention program provided 640 oral doses of monthly flea, tick, and heart worm prevention last year. Thanks to those individuals, businesses, and foundations who make it possible. 💕💕

Asha was found injured at a construction site and picked up by an animal protection officer. Luckily, thanks to her microchip, her family was found right away. But Asha had some injuries on her face and a broken leg that needed immediate attention.

Her family understood the severity of the situation, but this type of medical care is very expensive and many people can't cover an unexpected vet bill.

In the old way of animal sheltering, Asha's family might have been faced with having to permanently give up their dog, in order to get her the vet care she needed.

The community-focused model of animal services works to keep people and pets together, instead! Indy CARES helped get Asha treatment for her leg, and then she got to go home with her family who loves her.

Indy CARES said in a Facebook post: “We understand that not everyone is prepared for emergency vet bills. We believe in the importance of keeping pets in their homes, and supporting families in need.” There’s really not a better way to put it!

With the Human Animal Support Services community-focused animal services model, shelters and communities support one another. Reach out to your local animal shelter to find out more about what safety net resources are available, and how you can be a part of this transformative movement to keep people and pets together!

NATIONAL DOG BITE PREVENTION WEEK
Nature Tails was Co-founded by a former Pediatric Emergency Nurse who saw his fair share of dog bites. This week we are focusing on Bite prevention!

TIP #1 - ETIQUETTE: If you see a yellow ribbon on a leash, it means the pup needs some space. They are either in training, aren’t child friendly, or have fear/ anxiety issues.

Marcel The Advice Columnist Cat is very wise.
"Dear Marcel,
We recently adopted our first cat. She’s very beautiful and sweet. Her name is Miss Lulu.
There’s just one problem. She claws at our curtains, sofa, and chairs… whatever she can dig her toenails into. So we’re thinking about having her declawed, because if she keeps ruining our furniture and curtains, we’ll have to consider returning her to the shelter.
Isn’t Miss Lulu better off in our home, even if declawed, than she would be still living in a shelter?
-Claudia Clawson

Dear Clawdia,
No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. NO! You may not, under any circumstances, declaw Miss Lulu.

Declawing is a cruel and barbaric practice akin to cutting a third (or so) of one’s fingers off.
It’s not just the claws that are removed; part of the cat’s toes are amputated at the last joint.
🙀

Scratching is natural behavior for cats. We don’t do it to p**s you off; we do it to stretch and exercise our claws and mark our territory with our scent.
You should be flattered that Miss Lulu wants to announce to the world that your home is now hers too! Why on earth would you respond to such a lovely compliment by chopping her fingers off?

Also, please know that declawing your kitty can result in weird behavior, like biting (“they took away my claws, but I still have teeth!”), inappropriate pooing and peeing (“I’ll show those bastards!”) overgrooming, low self-esteem, stress, anxiety, despair, depression, and existential crises (“without claws, my life has no meaning, in fact existence itself is meaningless in a cold and lonely universe”).

Here’s what you CAN do instead;
* Get at least one good, sturdy scratching post. Not the cheap kind that you can knock over with a feather — it has to be tall enough that Lulu can stretch out her full length, and must have a solid base. Or those flat cardboard scratchers. The more, the better. Keep them near the things she’s been clawing.

* Try those silly-looking rubber caps that you can slip on over her claws. Personally, I wouldn’t be caught dead in those, but apparently some cats are ok with them. It’s worth a try.

* Cover your couch with a bedspread or something. That’s what my humans do. It looks like hell, but so what? Apparently they love me more than they love their couch. (Especially since I’ve ruined it anyway, hee hee hee!) You can temporarily remove it if you’re having fancy guests over, like a senator, or the Queen of England.

If these solutions aren’t appealing to you, then I suggest you look deep into your soul and ask yourself if you deserve to have a cat. Is nice furniture and drapery more important to you than having a loving feline companion? If the answer is yes, you MUST return Lulu to the shelter from which you adopted her, and never adopt another cat. It will be very confusing and upsetting for Lulu, but not nearly as bad as crippling her would be. And hopefully she will end up adopted by good sensible people who would never do anything to harm her.

And dear readers, please consider donating. They are working very hard to end this barbarism.
-Meow, Marcel🐾< I have all my fingers and toes!"

It must be you!!

“Pets, it turns out, also have last wishes before they die, but only known by veterinarians who put old and sick animals to sleep. Twitter user Jesse Dietrich asked a vet what was the most difficult part of his job.

The specialist answered without hesitation that it was the hardest for him to see how old or sick animals look for their owners with the eyes of their owners before going to sleep. The fact is that 90 % of owners don't want to be in a room with a dying animal. People leave so that they don't see their pet leave. But they don't realize that it's in these last moments of life that their pet needs them most.

Veterinarians ask the owners to be close to the animals until the very end. ′′It's inevitable that they die before you. Don't forget that you were the center of their life. Maybe they were just a part of you. But they are also your family. No matter how hard it is, don't leave them.

Dont let them die in a room with a stranger in a place they dont like. It is very painful for veterinarians to see how pets cannot find their owner during the last minutes of their life. They dont understand why the owner left them. After all, they needed their owner’s consolation.

Veterinarians do everything possible to ensure that animals are not so scared, but they are completely strangers to them. Don't be a coward because it's too painful for you. Think about the pet. Endure this pain for the sake of their sake. Be with them until the end.”

THE LOYALTY OF A DOG.
A hiker who went missing two weeks ago was found dead in California — with his dog by his side.
The man was reported missing on March 16, 2022.
His body was found Thursday, March 31, in a remote area of an urban park.
His dog, King, was alive but emaciated.
He apparently hadn't left the man’s side for two weeks, a relative told KNBC-TV.
There was no immediate word on the cause of the hiker’s death.
A DOG’S LOVE.

FYI. Eddies Haven’s vet highly suggests using a glass bowl for food and water. Still have to wash it but it will not sustain minuscule grooves that will be a breeding ground.

THE INVISIBLE SLIMY MONSTER IN THE WATER BOWL

Ever rub your fingers on the inside of your pet's water bowl and you feel a slippery slime of sorts? Well that invisible goo is called Biofilm.

Biofilm is a collection of organic and inorganic, living and dead materials collected on a surface. It is made up of many different types of bacteria bound together in a thick substance that acts as a glue to both hold the bacteria together and adhere it to a surface.

Biofilm can often be good bacteria but there is also the bad!

Biofilms provide a safe haven for organisms like Listeria, E. coli and legionella where they can reproduce to levels where contamination of products passing through that water becomes inevitable.

Bad Biofilms have been found to be involved in a wide variety of microbial infections in the body such as urinary tract infections, middle-ear infections and bladder infections.

Many pet parents are guilty of simply refilling the water bowl over and over without a wash and this becomes a wonderful environment for biofilm to soak around in.

How to reduce Biofilm:

Remember to clean your pet’s water bowl at least once a week if you can and change water daily.

For pet daycares where a host of different bacteria float around in water bowls, wash daily!

For best results, run your water bowls through a hot cycle in the dishwasher with an eco friendly, non-toxic soap to really clean out the biofilm!

Rodney Habib Pet Health Site

"An educated, informed and well-researched community of pet owners can only put more pressure on the pet food industry to be better! When pet owners know better, they will only do better!"

(P.S. - I am going to get lambasted over the "wash once a week at least" concept. However, after a wonderful discussion with a well known pro-active veterinarian/scientist, when she studied the bacteria looming in pets' water bowls she found if you have a healthy beast, biofilm can actually be full of wonderful, healthy bacteria. It's like playing in the mud as kids and having good bacteria all over you! So sometimes cleaning regularly can wash all the good stuff away. ;) )

Eddies Haven transported a dog to KY to get her yearly vaccines. She has the tendency to get carsick so we placed her in a crate with comfortable padding knowing we’d have washing to do when we got her back home. No problem!

The smartest move we made was to get rid of our front loading washer and purchased a Speed Queen from Stewart Williams Furniture !

EH and the families of pets we help also appreciate Stewart Williams for being a sponsor.

Laundry day might become your favorite activity, courtesy of a brand new Speed Queen washing machine! We are the only store in the area that offers this incredible machine. Come take a look... we'll be here until 5!

My heart hurts for these wonderful ladies who did so much to save Blue Belle. She was so blessed to have someone there when she passed. Blue Belle knew she mattered. I thank y’all for that. 💔🤣

I have spent the better part of today trying to figure out how to write this post...
Most of the time I am able to put into words what happened and how I am feeling and the impact of everything, however this case has sent me on a roller coaster ride from day one.
I was tagged in a random Facebook post about a sweet female pitbull who was impounded at a Texas shelter along with hundreds of other dogs all awaiting certain death. I'm not going to sugar coat it, hundreds die every week if not on a daily basis in that state alone. I am tagged in numerous posts every day asking to save them and it is just not humanly possible. For some reason this dog was different. The post said 2 year old female pit bull and her picture showed she clearly had a large mass taking over what use to be her right eye. Our specialty if major medical and I knew the crew we have and I knew we could make a difference in her life.
The next obstacle was finding transport... I was tagged in the post on a Friday night and the shelter doesn't respond on weekends. She was set to die on Monday. I scrambled and had a total of 5 different group chats going at once trying to find a ride for her. Amazingly at the last minute 2 amazing women stepped up and even though they were complete strangers, they offered to drive down together that Monday. They drove straight down... 18 hours. Once we were able to secure her safety we found out she came in with another dog. We knew we couldn't leave him behind and without a beat these women loaded them both up on Tuesday and headed to a pet friendly hotel room for the night and then back on the road.
Thursday early morning they arrived at our clinic. Both were in crazy rough shape and I my heart sank... as I was reading over the medical records they came with I noticed Blue Belles records stated she was actually 10 years old... game changer
At 2 years old the odds of the mass being really bad was mild/moderate and the odds of being able to remove and treat were good. At 10 years old the odds of the mass being really bad was astronomical and if it had spread there was nothing anyone could do.
I spent every single day since getting these two, collecting every single piece of medical data I could to look at the overall big picture. Blood work, urine testing, f***l testing, xrays, ultrasound, cytology, biopsy... everything. Every single test kept pointing me deeper into cancer...
Sunday she developed a cough...
Yesterday she stopped eating...
Today she wouldn't get up...
It took me until 4pm this afternoon to run out of tests to run and face reality that there was nothing I could do to save this dog that so many people had done absolutely everything for.
I went to the fast food joint next door and bought her a large fry and large cheese curd basket and I sat with her... alone and told her I was sorry that I couldn't make this happen for her... she wagged her tail and polished off the cheese curds and then laid her head down and let out a huge sigh and I knew it was time.

Blue Belle was here for all of 5 days... she has been on this Earth for 10 years (she had a microchip from the breeder) ... she has been wandering the streets on Texas for God knows how long and she has been alone... but she was absolutely anything but alone when she passed. We told her she was an amazing girl and we told her she had done a good job.

I am sorry that I couldn't save this one... it rocks me to the core... I don't want to call it a failure because it wasn't and I know I'm not but it is hard to feel like anything but at this moment. Thank you all for the love, support and donations.

EDDIE’S HAVEN “Standing in the gap” to aid with the vetting of dogs and cats of loving responsible caregivers

EDDIES HAVEN is a 501(c)3 created to honor the memory of a sh*tzu named Eddie and Lois who loved him. The relationship between the two of them and my rescue at that time, I Could Have Been Adopted, was the genesis of the mission Eddies Haven will embrace...to COLLABORATE with loving caregivers to aid companion animals. Whether it be emergency or preventative vetting, food, transport, short term fostering, supplies, low cost spay/neuter services, helping to find a companion or a combination of the above we will consult with the caregiver, assess the situation together and, help if we can.

As a nonprofit there is protocol that we are required to follow and caregivers must be willing to adhere to that protocol. Number one is that YOUR NEEDS AND FOLLOWUP COMMUNICATION WITH EDDIES HAVEN MUST BE BY SPEAKING WITH US. WE DO NOT CREATE A PLAN TO HELP BY TEXT OR EMAIL.
