💡Saturday Tip💡

When introducing two dogs to one another, it’s important to do it in a neutral location, like a park or open space, to prevent territorial behavior. Start by walking them parallel to each other at a distance, allowing them to get used to each other’s presence without direct interaction. Gradually close the gap between them as long as they remain calm. Allow them to sniff and greet naturally on loose leashes, and always monitor body language for signs of stress or tension. Keep the initial meetings short and sweet.

💡Saturday Tip 💡

Training your dog isn’t just a task—it’s a lifestyle that shapes every moment you share with your furry companion. Every interaction, whether intentional or not, contributes to your dog’s understanding of the world and their place in it. This means that, consciously or unconsciously, you are always teaching your dog something. The behaviors you reinforce, even those you may not intend to, become part of their daily routine.

To cultivate the habits and behaviors you want in your dog, it’s essential to make training a part of your everyday life. This doesn’t mean spending hours on end in formal training sessions, but rather integrating positive reinforcement and clear communication into everything you do. Whether it’s during a walk, playtime, or quiet moments at home, every interaction is an opportunity to reinforce good behavior.

By consistently guiding and teaching your dog, you’re helping them understand what’s expected of them, which in turn creates a harmonious and enjoyable relationship. Over time, this approach helps to form positive habits that become second nature to your dog, making your day-to-day life together more rewarding and stress-free.

Remember, training is not just about commands—it’s about building a strong, trusting bond with your dog, ensuring they feel secure, confident, and loved. Embrace training as a lifelong journey, one that enhances both your life and your dog’s, making it richer and more fulfilling with each passing day.

E-collars, when used properly, can be a powerful training tool. They use electric stimulation similar to what you might experience at a chiropractor, offering a pulsing wave sensation rather than a shock. With adjustable intensity settings, you can ensure your dog feels just the right amount of stimulation.

🐾 Understanding the Four Quadrants of Dog Behavior🐾

In dog training, the four quadrants of operant conditioning are key to understanding how to shape your pup’s behavior. Let’s break them down:

1️⃣ Positive Reinforcement: Adding something pleasant to increase a behavior.

🦴 Example: Giving a treat when your dog sits on command.

2️⃣ Negative Reinforcement: Removing something unpleasant to increase a behavior.

🌟 Example: Releasing pressure on the leash when your dog stops pulling.

3️⃣ Positive Punishment: Adding something unpleasant to decrease a behavior.

⚡ Example: Using a loud noise to stop barking.

4️⃣ Negative Punishment: Removing something pleasant to decrease a behavior.

❌ Example: Taking away a toy when your dog misbehaves.

Understanding these concepts helps create effective and compassionate training strategies. Remember, “positive” and “negative” in this context mean adding or removing something, not good or bad. Happy training! 🐶💡

Name: Blue

Type: Doberman

What Program: Polish Paws Program

Struggles: Impulse control, dog reactivity, inappropriate pushy-ness with other dogs, settling down

This Doberman has a fantastic grasp of verbal communication, but we’re focusing on improving her impulse control. Blue has been working hard to manage her dog reactivity and reduce her pushiness with other dogs. “Back-Tie” Explained! 🐾

Ever heard a trainer say “back-tie your dog”? This is what they mean!

Why use a back-tie? Here are a few reasons:

🐶 Safety and Control: Keeps your dog in a specific area, preventing them from running around, getting into dangerous things, or straying too far from their spot.

🧘 Impulse Control: Helps teach dogs to stay in one place despite distractions, promoting calm behavior.

🚫 Preventing Jumping/Lunging: Stops dogs from jumping on people or lunging at distractions, allowing you to encourage and reward calm behavior.

🌟 Safe Exposure: Lets your dog safely experience various stimuli (other dogs, people, noises) without the risk of bolting or causing harm.

Use back-ties to guide and correct your dog effectively! 🐶✨

🚨New Trainee Update🚨

Name: Artie (3 years old)

What program?: Canine Complete

Struggles: Over arousal causing anxious tendencies, unable to regulate emotions, lack of boundaries and ability to create space. Charging people when coming into the house

What are we working on/Updates: When he was first brought on, he was over aroused, excitable, lack boundaries and charged at people while barking coming through the door, lacking guidance and direction. We’ve been working on his state of mind by doing things like outdoor exposure and socialization.

Implementing clear verbal communication and obedience training has improved his day-to-day life. Now, that he’s finished his his board and train portion, he off to go home to show off the skills with his owners 👏🏼 We’ll check in a few weeks with him and his owner on how it’s going, what needs to change, etc.

It’s a great reminder that the training doesn’t stop after the dog finishes with the board and train portion!

🚨 New Trainee Alert 🚨

Sam : 3 year old Australian Shepherd

What program?: Complete Canine

Struggles: Exposure and disComfort around people and dogs

What are we working on?
Obedience is not this dog’s issue.. Sam came in with all the bells and whistles even including some really cute tricks.

The disconnect is the reliable communication and direction from owner and having proper socialization and environment exposures.

Sam is another perfect example of needing some fine tuning in making sure he understands the verbal communication (obedience) but more importantly implementing to help guide and direct during our exposure and socializing moments.

Sam literally comes everywhere with us. This is what our training offers. The REAL life exposures, the DAY to DAY life!

💡Saturday Tip💡

If you’re having a hard time with place command for your dog, use a least. A leash can help guide your dog to the designated spot and keep them there. Gently guide them back to the spot if they try to leave, and reward them once they settle.
