Lisa Shannon was ready to expand her fur family and stopped by to visit our cats. Marla and Ace are a bonded pair brought in by their previous owner. They are 8 month old and spayed and neutered so they were ready to go home as soon as Lisa completed her paper work. She was excited to be adding these sweet cats to their family that also includes dogs Elvis, an 11 year old Pom/Peke mix and Rose, a 3 year old Border Collie. All of their animals are inside. We hope Elvis, Rose , Marla and Ace are all friends in no time. Thank you Lisa for choosing to adopt this bonded pair and for adopting from MARL.

Kegan Sparks visited our cats and kittens Saturday and this handsome seal point Siamese boy captured her heart. Kegan lost her sweet girl Tess, age 13 years, to cancer. We are so glad she found this sweet boy to help her heal her heart. He will be spoiled in no time. Saturday was his first day in our adoption room but he is at home with his new mom and is going to be one spoiled mama's boy. Thank you so much Kegan for adopting from MARL. Siamese are so special and you are going to love this sweetie.

We have had a great week for cat adoptions. Three of our cat adoptions were double adoptions. We love when one adoption turns into a pair. Amy Blair came in to adopt a kitten and decided that two were more fun than one. We are so glad Amy decided to get two so they would have a friend to play with. Amy adopted Benny, 8 weeks and Polo, about 10 weeks. Amy had her hands and arms full of squirming kittens while we tried to capture a quick adoption photo. Thank you Amy for choosing to adopt two and for adopting from MARL.

This is just an example of what we get calls about every single day.

While Conner's story is heartbreaking, it has a very happy ending. We were called by a landlord who had to evict a renter. He had no idea the woman had a dog. About a week after she left, he went in to start clean up and found a sweet dog locked in a kennel with no food or water. While there was a bowl it was bone dry. Conner was so excited to see someone. The cage floor was covered in f***s and wet with urine. This sweet boy had urine and f***s stains on his legs and hips and tail. He had no room to get to a clean dry area. The landlord pulled the cage outside so he could get a little fresh air. Conner had been left in the locked apartment with no air conditioning on and IF the owner left him water there was none left.
Our staff removed him from the filthy cage and placed him in a clean carrier for the trip back to the shelter. As soon as he was placed in the air conditioned car, he laid down napped on his way back to the shelter. Conner knew he had been rescued and was safe. Ronnie, one of staff that helped pick him up, took him straight to the bath tub when they got back to the shelter. Conner did not mind the bath at all and seem to enjoy the water and attention. After his bath he was placed in a clean cage with food and water. He drank a lot and ate some but very quickly curled up and went to sleep. Even with all the shelter noise, he slept for a long time. He was so exhausted.
Conner was a happy dog during his stay with us. He loved attention and seemed to enjoy watching all the shelter activity. Conner's happy ever after happened recently when he was adopted by Larry and Alyson Gillum. They lost their sweet 14 year old Oreo, a Chihuahua to heart problems. They were ready to open their home and hearts to another sweet dog in need. Conner is so blessed to have such a wonderful new family. Thank you Larry and Alyson for choosing Conner.
On the biggest day of giving, please help us help animals, like Conner, that need our help! Do you remember the story about Onyx? We think this Giving Tuesday it is an important story to tell again- This is the story of Onyx. Her story will be a difficult read but it is an important story. In October, MARL will celebrated 55 years of being a voice for animals, rescuing, loving and finding wonderful homes for thousands of dogs and cats. We have seen thousands of abuse cases in that time. We have sheltered, provided medical care and second chances for tens of thousands. Each adoption means so much to us. We know Onyx's story will touch your hearts just as it did ours. Onyx was seized by an officer with the Clinton MS Police Department. Her condition extremely poor and she was suffering from serious injuries. MARL staff veterinarian, Dr. Mary Fooshee examined her upon her arrival. The following are part of her assessments:
Black German Shephard - 3 year old female, 43 pounds. She presented as lethargic and depressed. She was exhibiting symptoms of a concussion upon presentation.
She was dehydrated with pale mucous membranes. Body condition thin. Head covered in dried blood and green crusted discharge from both eyes. Abdomen tender on palpation.
She had a large firm swelling along her left rib cage and bone rubbing on bone mid chest on right side. Noted 2 areas of swelling with fresh vertebrae fractures on lumbar spine. Presented obvious area of femoral fracture.
A 2 cm laceration on the large bone at top of skull with approximately 10 cm x 10 cm (4 inch x 4inch) area of soft and firm swelling. Neurologically lethargic and apathetic. Eyes slightly dilated and fixed. Evidence of strangulation injury of her back left leg above the hock, possibly due to tethering.
X-rays confirmed old femoral fracture, old rib fractures on the right and new rib fractures on the left. Fractures on the top of her vertebra. After several days of hand feeding, fluids and pain medication, she slowly began to respond and she began to eat and drink on her own.
Onyx (name by our hospital staff) was in our shelter hospital for 2 weeks. As soon as she was eating and drinking well and able to get up and move around, she was moved to a inside/outside run as her recovery continued. At this point, Dr. Fooshee took her to Huntcliff Animal Hospital in Clinton for X-rays to learn the extent of her injuries. The X-rays reflected old and new rib fractures and the old and very serious femoral fractures to her leg. Dr. Fooshee forwarded the radiographs to Mississippi State University College of Veterinary Medicine for evaluation. As Dr Fooshee suspected, the injury was too extreme to attempt a repair and would not yield a good outcome. Amputation was recommended.
Dr Fooshee's chart notation reads: "It is my opinion and verified by radiographs, this dog has endured significant and prolonged and extremely painful trauma to her body. Since there is no evidence of any attempt to address her fractured leg, I believe she was left in severe pain unattended, while also being tethered by her fractured leg. None of her injuries were self induced. While she was extremely fearful of people to begin with, she has regained self-confidence and become sweet and playful."
Dr Fooshee preformed the extensive, long surgery in our hospital. In March, Onyx was walking, running and has gained weight. She is a beautiful girl deserving of a better loving life. She arrived with a companion dog who had not been abused at her level that was transferred to our friends at CARA. She found a wonderful home with Tracey Thompson back in March!
We couldn't do what we do without donations. In a private vet clinic, Onyx's medical care and recovery would have cost thousands of dollars. Every dollar counts and without our wonderful supporters we could not do the work we do for these precious animals. We save as many as we can but we can only do it because of caring partners like you. No gift is too small to help the animals.

Because of you, our doors have been open for 55 years.
Because of you, over 67,000 animals have found loving, forever homes.
On this Giving Tuesday, your support will help us keep our doors open to all of the animals in need. This year has been hard for everyone. We are seeing the same cost increases you are seeing in your businesses and home budgets. We never want to say No to a request for help, but we often wonder where the money will come from. Please help us continue to be there for all the animals that come through our doors, no matter the circumstances.
Please share with your friends and stay tuned today for some of the stories that our donors make possible.

Jennifer Malley adopted this adorable Heeler mix puppy. The puppy is 9 weeks old and part of a litter that was recently brought to MARL. This little pup will be home alone only 4 hours a day. Just enough time for a long puppy nap to be ready to play with his new kids, ages 15, 13 and 3. You can see in her adoption photo how excited her adorable 3 year old is. This little pup will be herding the 3 year old around in no time. She will be an inside dog and will have her choice of snuggle partners at bedtime. Thank you Jennifer for choosing this sweet girl and for adopting from MARL.

Shiloh is about 6 months old and was brought to us as a stray. We think she is a Malinois mix. This sweet girl was adopted at our recent Hollywood Feed event by Leah VanLaan. This is going to be the best home for Shiloh! She has a new mom, 2 kids of her own, ages 6 and 9 years, she will be an inside dog and home alone only 2 hours a day. How sweet is that for this little street stray? A fairy tale ending for sure. Thank you Leah for choosing Shiloh to become part of your family and for adopting from MARL.
