Help us in welcoming the newest member of our Board of Directors, Shayne! Shayne has been part of our team for some time now as our volunteer Adoption Team Supervisor, but was just recently elected to serve on our board.
Shayne Gregson ('19), a proud Aggie engineer, returned to College Station to be closer to her family, bringing with her a wealth of experience from her farm life upbringing. After relocating back to BCS, Shayne dedicated her time to rescuing and fostering dogs from Houston and San Antonio. Her passion for animal welfare eventually led her to focus on supporting her local community.
Shayne’s home is a vibrant environment filled with dogs, cats (including a special SKR alumni), fish, and children. She takes great joy in watching her kids grow up with a deep sense of responsibility and care for their pets.
What Shayne cherishes most about SKR is its unwavering commitment to community improvement, for pets and people, through education.

We have had SO MANY people reach out for tips on building your kitty shelters, which is AWESOME! We wanted to share this great tutorial from @freedomfarmhouse for a quick and easy DIY kitty shelter.
Some important notes:
1) You don't have to get this fancy. This is an A++ feral kitty shelter, but there are ways to provide warm housing that don't require this much effort.
2) If you are cutting a hole in a plastic bin, make sure it isn't sharp. You can sand it smooth, use duct tape or a pool noodle to cover it, or other soft things. The possibilities are endless!
3) You don't have to cut the hole in the end as shown. You can cut a hole in the side of the bin off-center so that the cats have a corner to tuck away from the cold.
4) Insulation is KEY. If you do not have insulation hanging around your home, styrofoam or straw works wonders. Mylar blankets are also great.
5) Blankets, towels, and HAY hold moisture and can cause the cats to become hypothermic. DO NOT USE THESE.
6) Don't have a tote lying around? Use an empty litter container! If you are using something that could be mistaken for garbage, make sure to label it. See the comments for examples!
7) Elevate your cat house and insulate underneath it. The ground is cold and wet. Keeping your kitty house off the ground will help kitties stay extra warm.
Thanks for caring about all of the kitties of BCS and BEYOND!

Ever wonder what feeding time for four neonates looks like? Here is a ULTRA condensed version!
You will have to forgive Mallori for how she looks because #bottlebabies, but here are SIX key things she wants to make sure everyone knows in case they happen to be in the position of caring for neonates:
1. DO NOT feed dairy, almond, soy, human breast, milk etc. Kittens need Kitten Milk Replacer and our favorite is by Breeder's Edge! It doesn't clump, the powder doesn't need to be refridgerated, and we have had amazing results with this as opposed to other KMRs.
2. Make sure your kittens are warm! If a kitten does not have a high enough body temperature, they won't be able to digest their meal and it could be fatal. Neonates cannot maintain their body temperature on their own, so it's important you provide a constant heat source. We are luck enough to have incubators thanks to Orphan Kitten Club but a heating pad or disc works well too! (Just make sure there are layers between the heat source and the kittens.)
3. Never feed your kitten upside down. The first time Mallori fed her niece, she felt like she was doing something terribly wrong because you CANNOT feed a kitten like a human baby. You want to make sure that kittens are right side up so they do not aspirate or choke on their meal.
4. Never overfeed your kittens. This can cause nasty diarrhea that can be life threatening. These kiddos came to us VERY skinny, basically skeletons in fur suits (which is why their names are Jack Skellington, Grim, Bonejangles, and Skelita), so it's important that they eat small, frequent meals. We want them to gain, but not TOO fast. At their age, they should be roughly 250 grams. These kiddos are between 116 and 142 grams!
5. You'e gotta make them 💩. Neonates cannot urinate or defecate on their own. That's why mama kitties are always licking their butts. Of course, it helps keep them clean, but it also stimulates them to empty waste. Mom eats the waste... but PLEASE don't d
Bobcat, Red Fox, and Javalina are practicing their boxing skills. Can someone please tell us HOW none of these kiddos have been scooped up yet?
Reach out if you are interested in bringing one of these adorable Texas Wildlife kiddos home!

Our Andy’s babies had a great first night! They are quickly getting the hang of latching and acting like crazy little bebes! Keep fighting little ones!
We're tired, y'all.
It seems like this kitten season just won't stop. Our intake has been closed for quite some time due to limited resources such as💰and foster homes, but we couldn't NOT help these kittens. 😔
We received a message this morning about kittens that had been found in a trash can.... covered with soapy water. How they ended up in that trash can is uncertain, but the state they are in BECAUSE of that soapy, wet trash can is certain. 🪣
We initally thought these kittens may be younger because all of their eyes were closed. WRONG. They were sealed shut with discharge. All four kittens have significant nasal discharge, ocular discharge, and are sneezing tremedously. They don't have fantastic appetites yet because they can't breathe very well through their little noses.
They are currently nice and toasty in an incubator provided by Orphan Kitten Club that has an attachment to increase humidity and help break up all of the gunkies. They have also been started on meds to help clear up whatever they may be fighting.
In honor of our profit share today with Andy's Frozen Custard, these kittens have been named after soem Andy's staples. Help us welcome JackHammer, Rico Suave, Staw-Ana, and Jitterbug to the family. These sweet kiddos have a long road of recovery ahead of them, and they certainly aren't out of the woods... But they are OUT OF THE TRASHCAN.

Kazoo is BEYOND excited that it's Amazon Pet Day! He can't wait to see what goodies he gets!
Amazon.com offers Pet Day as a 48 hour sale with THOUSANDS of items marked down for pet owners. That means your dollar goes that much further! Scan the QR code (or hold your finger down on your phone screen) to shop our Amazon wish list. There are items from food, litter, essential supplies, as well as lots of toys and enrichment items for the kiddos!
Did you know that we DO NOT reuse litter boxes or soft toys between litters? The reason being is that those little grooves at the bottom of the boxes can harbor bacteria and creepy crawlies regardless of how well we disinfect! The same goes for soft toys. There is no way to ensure we are sanitizing them enough to make sure we aren't passing along any yuckies to our vulnerable babies!

This is not our typical post, but it is the way things go in rescue sometimes. Working in animal welfare is hard, whether that be rescue/shelter work, veterinary medicine, or other animal related fields. You never truly know the whole story of what is happening, or has happened, behind the scenes.
We have many policies and procedures, and all of those are grounded in the best interests of the animals in our care. These policies have been drafted with the help of veterinarians, licensed veterinary technicians, and others with years of experience working in animal welfare.
We ask that you please respect these policies and, also, please only inquire about adopting specific kittens when they have been posted as adoptable.
Also, please do not feel as though this is an invitation to give your opinion as to what may have happened in this situation. It will not bring Kiama back, and the rest of her siblings are continuing to thrive, including the two we were most worried about.
We are still in complete awe of the support we had yesterday at Texas Plant Connection! We are so grateful for local businesses that want to do their part to help our mission.
Thank you all so much for coming out and we hope you enjoy all of your new plant bebes!
