This sweet lady is Baby. Believe it or not, she is a 17 year old kitty who came in today for her 6 month check up. Like many older kitties, she has some loss of kidney function, so we like to monitor her blood work and blood pressure more frequently. Though there is no cure for chronic kidney disease in dogs or cats, it can be managed and slowed down with special renal/kidney diets and blood pressure medications if there is hypertension (high blood pressure) present.

"Fireworks, picnics and other Fourth of July traditions can be great fun for people; but all of the festivities can be frightening and even dangerous for animals. Noisy fireworks and other celebrations can startle animals and cause them to run away; holiday foods can be unhealthy; summer heat and travel can be dangerous; and potentially dangerous debris can end up lying on the ground where pets can eat or play with it.

Whether or not you're planning your own Independence Day celebration, it's important to take precautions to keep your pets safe both during and after Fourth of July festivities."

Here is just 1 of at least 100 microflora found in just 1 drop of blood on a heartworm positive dog. It can take up to 6 months for these larva to mature into foot long (12 inches) adult worms.

"Annual testing is necessary, even when dogs are on heartworm prevention year-round, to ensure that the prevention program is working. Heartworm medications are highly effective, but dogs can still become infected. If you miss just one dose of a monthly medication—or give it late—it can leave your dog unprotected. Even if you give the medication as recommended, your dog may spit out or vomit a heartworm pill—or rub off a topical medication. Heartworm preventives are highly effective, but not 100 percent effective. If you don’t get your dog test, you won’t know your dog needs treatment."

Heartworm disease is a serious disease that can potentially result in severe lung disease, heart failure, other organ damage, and death in our dogs and cats. It is caused by a parasitic worm called Dirofilaria immitis, which are spread through the bite of a mosquito. There is a treatment for our dogs, which unfortunately is very costly and painful to them. There is no known treatment for cats.

"“The tragedy of dog bites is that most are preventable,” says animal trainer and behavior expert, Victoria Stilwell. “The more we take the time to understand dogs’ needs and teach them the skills to cope with the challenges of living in a domestic environment, the less bites will occur.”"

Helping owners understand dogs’ behavioral cues can go a long way in promoting peaceful coexistence between people and their canine companions.
