Not veterinary related but important! If you are going to a North Carolina Beach this weekend they are advising that you NOT get into the water in many places. Some places will even fine you if you enter the water unless you are tethered to a floatation device due to the high chance you will need to be rescued and that you will put others lives in danger that need to rescue you. This is due to expected VERY strong and widespread rip currents due to Hurricane Ernesto. Rip currents can be detected in as little as 2' of water and once you are waist deep even strong people can be pulled off their feet and pulled away from the shore. Certainly go lay on the beach and smell the salty water...but if you want to live to see another lazy beach weekend avoid going into the ocean this weekend.

This is a very sweet orange cat that needs a home. He is FIV positive so he needs to be neutered and indoor ONLY. He has been roaming a neighborhood and the person that has recently begun to care for him is not able to bring him into their current home but wants him to be safe and cared for. If taken to the shelter he would likely be euthanized on intake due to FIV status and for “herd health” reasons cannot remain outdoors. Once neutered he could live with other cats as long as there was no fighting and he was indoor only or can be an indoor only solo cat or live with other FIV cats.

He had first set of vaccines and revolution plus.

He is VERY SWEET!!!!

Don’t die in a rip current! There have been over 150 rip current rescues in NC and at least 6 deaths in Florida over the weekend. You should not be getting in the ocean unless you understand what a rip current is and how to get out of it.

A rip current is caused by underwater topography. The waves bring water towards shore and as the water moves back to the ocean, if there is a break in a sandbar etc the water will move out faster in that area. The water in that area could be one to 2 ft./s or as fast as 8 ft./s which is faster than an Olympic swimmer. This means you’re not going to fight a rip current and swim directly back to shore. You will get exhausted and drown if you try.

Instead, fight your urge to panic and swim PARALLEL to the shore. Rip currents are very strong but generally NOT wide. As soon as you realize you are in one swim parallel to shore and you will be out if it quickly. The direction north or south does not matter, just go parallel. Once you swim parallel and you are no longer being pulled further from shore then you can swim towards the shore.

MAKE SURE YOU KNOW HOW TO FLOAT. a lot of people going to the ocean are not conditioned endurance swimmers and between swimming and your adrenaline surge you could end up feeling fatigued pretty quickly. if you end up feeling exhausted after escaping the rip current but before you get back to shore know how to float so you don’t have to use energy to stay above water and raise your arm to get the attention of a lifeguard.

If someone does come out to rescue you remember not to grab onto them and put them at risk for drowning as well. Let them get a hold of you.

Don’t swim where there is no lifeguard on duty and make sure everyone in your group knows how to escape a rip. Look out for others as well if someone looks a bit too far from shore.

Raise your hand if you love German Shepherds! We do! Especially this guy. He's GSD through and through. Sweet and smart with a little side of sass. He's also a charmer and will flash those big brown eyes at you so fast you won't know what hit you. He walks well on a leash, seems to be housetrained, and other dogs do not really bother him. He met one other male at the playground, and seemed to want to play more than anything (slow introductions are still a must). The shelter is open from 11-4 if you want to meet this hunkster in person.
