This photo is a collage of photos of horses recently euthanized due to equine infectious anemia. They range from backyard horses that never left the property to those that have traveled many states. Transmission can occur naturally such as via biting insects or iatrogenic such as via contaminated syringes. These cases were the result of human complacency and blood contamination. This can happen if the same syringe and needle are re-used, if a needle punctures a multi-use vial after already being used on a horse- contaminating that vial even if someone else uses a new syringe and needle etc. The majority of EIA positive cases in the USA are caused by humans. Most often associated with trainers sharing meds and needles among horses in their care- especially among the bushtrack seen. This is a deadly disease with no cure. Horses have to be euthanized or permanently quarantined.

Remember this photo. They were someones pet, companion, competition horse and they were all euthanized due to EIA.

When you are using your multi-dose Adequan, Legend, Banamine etc at the barn- use a fresh syringe and needle everytime.

Require all new incoming horses to have a recent coggins test before coming on your property.

If you host shows, clinics etc- require proof of current negative coggins.

Test all of your equines once a year- even if they never leave the property.

Heartworm disease 🤬🤮
Why are we so passionate about annual testing and prevention??
Because you have NO way of knowing if a dog has heartworm disease without testing. They “look” healthy like this fella in the photo- all while dealing with permanent damage to multiple organs. Heartworm disease starts with a simple mosquito bite so all dogs in NC are at risk. Yes, even your “house dogs” because no matter how tiny, they should be going outside regularly for bathroom breaks, exercise and sunshine. Even if they literally never left your house- mosquitos do get inside.

Left untreated dogs will eventually go into heart failure and develop a bloated belly, murmur and eventually die from heart failure. Well before that , while they still look completely healthy on the outside, damage is taking place- some of which is permanent due to scar tissue. The immature stages burrow thru tissues and organs leaving inflammation and scarring in their wake. They develop into adult worms that live in the heart and lungs. These worms mate and produce microfilaria which circulate in the blood, causing further inflammation and damage. The microfilaria are picked up by mosquitoes during a blood meals and transmitted to the next pet when the mosquitoe bites them.

Treatment is expensive and not without significant risks.

Therefore, annual testing and strict prevention is KEY to literally protect your dog’s heart and lungs.

Pictured is a heartworm positive dog recently adopted by Dr. Commerford and is undergoing heartworm treatment now. It takes months and hundreds of dollars to treat (can be well over a thousand depending on how big your dog is, where you live and their stage). Had someone protected this guys heart he would not be dealing with the side effects and exercise restriction associated with treatment. However, without treatment he would develop right sided heart failure so it is a critical step to giving him the best chance at a long life.

‼️Why We Strongly Recommend the Leptospirosis Vaccine‼️

Leptospirosis is a serious and potentially life-threatening disease that affects both animals and humans—making it what’s known as a zoonotic disease. It’s caused by bacteria found in the urine of infected animals and can be spread through contaminated water, soil, or direct contact with infected pets. Even dogs that live primarily indoors are at risk, especially after heavy rain or flooding.

Vaccination is one of the most effective ways to protect your dog—and your entire household—from this dangerous illness.

Recently, this hit close to home. Our own veterinarian, Dr. Jason Kennell, likely contracted leptospirosis from a contagious patient. He was hospitalized for five days, after battling symptoms for nearly a week. This has been a sobering reminder of just how real and serious this disease can be—not only for your pets but for the people who care for them.

We can’t stress enough how important it is to vaccinate. It’s a simple step that can prevent significant suffering for both pets and people.

Finally, we want to extend our heartfelt thanks to all of our wonderful clients who have been so patient and understanding while we adjusted schedules. Being down Dr. Jason and allowing his wife, Dr. Kaci, time to be by his side meant some changes in our daily operations—and your support has meant the world to our team.

Thank you for trusting us with your pets—and for being part of our extended clinic family. 💙💙🐈🐕

If you have a dog with thunderstorm phobia or noise phobia with fireworks now is the time to make plans for how to help them. For some ThunderShirt, calming phermones or over the counter calming supplements help. Others need prescription support. The sooner you address their anxiety, the better you can help them manage.

If you actually SEE signs of heartworm infection, your dog has likely been infected for a long time. Annual screening for heartworms helps catch this deadly disease early.
