Our cowgirls, Claire and Brita, are enjoying their expanded shelter! Now double in size, their house allow the girls room to stretch out and lay indoors. With our girls being SO big, they need this space to enjoy meals and sleep comfortably. As you can see, they are happy to receive extra cuddles in their space too!

Congratulations to our ROOTS Institute students! They have completed their 5-day intensive training and are just a few months away from becoming certified in Equine/Animal Assisted therapy and self-development. Over these months, students will practice their learning before returning for their final test in December. Faculty will be helping them along the way by providing individual supervision and feedback until they feel ready to test. We feel confident that each student in our program will succeed and become incredible practitioners in this field. We can’t wait to see how they will help shape this ever changing field. Stay tuned!

OHW’s ROOTS Institute’s students are in the final stretch to becoming Certified Equine/Animal Assisted practitioners! Today, students led faculty members, role-playing real world clients, through therapeutic sessions. Points of effect included promoting joy, stress reduction, self-regulation, and navigating difficult topics. We are so proud of our class. They have taken the ROOTS’ principles and made them their own, while inspiring us with new ideas and techniques we’ll use in our own practices. Tomorrow is our final day together in-person, before students go home to complete their practicum hours. Here are a few pictures from today’s sessions.

What a day! The morning started off clear and dry while we worked with our ROOTS Institute students in practicing Equine/Animal Assisted sessions. Our students started leading their own sessions today with faculty and did such a wonderful job. In the afternoon, our animal care volunteers joined us for an experiential workshop to learn about how OHW clinicians provide therapeutic services to groups in our community. ROOTS students joined in the fun, and learned alongside our volunteers. Then… a massive storm moved in! About halfway through our scheduled time and activities, we were rained out. Thankfully, all participants understood the predicament of true PNW weather, and we laughed off the experience through the deluge.
We are incredibly grateful for our volunteers and hope to reschedule another, and hopefully longer, experience for them in the near future.
We have two more days with our students and look forward to more learning in much better weather!

OHW’s ROOTS Institute students are in the final stretch of their Equine/Animal Assisted Therapy & Self-Development certification training. Five students are attending our in-person module here at Sanctuary for a five day intensive training. We are practicing sessions with each other, learning activities for individuals and groups, and connecting with our animal partners. We look forward to this week all year! Teaching our students the art of this work is an intense yet gratifying process and we can’t wait to certify these wonderful individuals to provide meaningful services to their communities.

Today is Rainbow Bridge Remembrance Day.

Rainbow Bridge Remembrance Day is celebrated on August 28th each year to honor and remember pets that have passed away. The pain of loss is real. As each person travels through their grief, we remember the companionship and comfort they provided to us. Don't forget that part of the relationship included care provided by you. The empty space left by the loss of a beloved pet is sometimes a difficult void to overcome.

This day can be a way to help heal the pain of loss and remember the companionship and comfort pets provided. Some ways to celebrate include:
Sharing memories of pets, such as photos and videos
Creating an outdoor memorial or garden
Partake in some of their favorite activites
Visit some of their favorite places

If you feel the need to speak to someone about your grief, please call the Pet Loss Grievence Hotline at (855) 245-8214 to speak with a licensed therapist.

NEW SPECIES ANNOUNCEMENT! Meet Hercules, a Common Map Turtle who has been a part of an outdoor science school for a decade. He has been in many schools and spent many hours travelling to do education events. The school has had to find forever homes for their animals and we are super excited to bring Hercules to OHW. He came home yesterday and received a clean bill of health today from our veterinarian! We can’t wait to introduce you all. Turtles get attached to their caregivers, recognize faces, and can enjoy the attention of people. They are also food motivated. We will all have a lot to learn and teach about this aquatic species!

Our last summer camp of the year was such a treat! This group of kids were so connective with the animals and each other. We spent time just sitting on our favorite gravel pile, enjoying nature and talking. We built bird houses, nature art and obstacle courses for to enjoy. Each camper had time with their favorite animals to build a friendship, or renew an old one. With school starting soon, we talked about our excitement and fears, and how to handle tough situations. They even decided together to bring favorite items from home to share with the group! We’ll miss these kiddos and can’t wait to have them back again.

Welcome To Sanctuary Nova!

A few months ago, OHW was contacted by our veterinarian about a horse in need of a forever home. Nova is a 20 year-old Andalusian who has several health issues that require constant care, medication management, and a strict dietary protocol. Since we had just started the construction project here, Nova’s move had to wait until the dust settled. Nova was able to move in on August 12!

Nova is settling in well. It is always stressful to leave old friends and familiar routines and we try very hard to minimize the stress on our end. We like to give them space to settle without having to directly interact with other horses until they have a sense of who is around. Our horses will be stopping by for a sniff and a squeal in the coming weeks and in no time, Nova will feel a part of the herd.

We’ll keep you updated on her progress!

The grass is always greener… or so we’re told by our animal residents. Kitties in bunny cages, bunnies in chinchilla cages, and chickens only using the favorite nesting box 😂 our animals are full of personality and opinions, and we wouldn’t have it any other way!
