Ever wondered what happens when a new queen hatches? 🐝👑 When a virgin queen emerges from the top of the cell, she’s on a mission to eliminate her rivals, starting with a dramatic chorus of piping and quacking.
🗣️ Piping is the new queen’s way of saying, "I'm here to rule!" She vibrates her wing muscles against the comb, producing high-pitched pulses known as tooting. This tells everyone she’s ready to take charge.
🗣️ Quacking is the reply from queens still in their cells, signaling their presence with lower-pitched sounds. If two queens emerge at once, it’s a fight to the death—only one will rule the hive.
This fascinating behavior highlights the incredible communication and social structure of honeybees. So, when you hear those quacks and pipes, remember: it’s not just noise—it’s the sound of a royal rumble!
🌸🐝 Ever wondered how bees collect pollen and help our plants thrive? They scout for vibrant, fragrant flowers, using their front legs and saliva to gather pollen, which then sticks to their hind leg hairs. They transport this precious pollen back to the hive, mixing it with nectar to create "bee bread"—a vital food source for the colony. 🌼🍯This amazing process not only sustains bees but also fertilizes plants, keeping our ecosystem buzzing!
Happy #NationalHoneyBeeDay!! 🐝🐝
🐝 As we celebrate today honey bees, we also recognize their contribution to our everyday lives and our ecosystem 🌎—they are responsible for more than 1/3 of the food we eat so it’s vital to continue to protect this critical species for future generations.
🐝 We want to thank our fellow beekeepers—whose hard work ensures we have healthy bees to pollinate crops.
#CatchTheBuzz: Bees are the masters of summer cooling! 🐝💨 When the hive heats up, they form mini ventilation teams, fanning their wings to draw out the hot air and pull in cooler breezes. Nature's AC in action!
🧼🐝 Have you ever wondered how honeybees stay so clean? #CatchTheBuzz Fact: Honeybees are excellent at grooming! They use their legs to clean dirt, parasites, and fungi from their bodies, including special antennae cleaners essential for communication and picking up sounds. Plus, bees often help each other stay clean, boosting colony health.
🌼✨ Did you know it takes 2 million blooms for bees to make just 1 pound of honey? 🐝 As August rolls in, we're deep into honey harvest season at Astor Apiaries! During the June nectar flow, bees work tirelessly to transform nectar into honey, reducing its water content to below 17-18% to make it shelf-stable. 🍯💛 Curious about the magic behind the process? 🌸🐝 The Bumble Bee 🐝🌸 Unlike other bees, they can fly in cooler temps and lower light, using a special technique called “buzz pollination” to help plants like tomatoes, peppers, and cranberries. 🌿🍅
They don’t make much honey, just enough to feed the colony for a few days, because their queens hibernate through winter. 🌼❄️ These generalist feeders are the first bees out in late winter and the last in fall, needing a wide range of plants to support their colony. Some even specialize in foraging on specific plants!
