🐝👑 Did you know a hive can have two queens at once? It’s more common than you think! When the old queen’s reign starts to fizzle, worker bees raise a successor. Sometimes, both queens coexist, with workers keeping them apart to dodge drama. But in the end, only one queen will rule—whether the old one steps down, is overthrown, or simply vanishes. Long live the new queen!

Ever wondered what happens when a new queen hatches? 🐝👑 When a virgin queen emerges from the top of the cell, she’s on a mission to eliminate her rivals, starting with a dramatic chorus of piping and quacking.

🗣️ Piping is the new queen’s way of saying, "I'm here to rule!" She vibrates her wing muscles against the comb, producing high-pitched pulses known as tooting. This tells everyone she’s ready to take charge.

🗣️ Quacking is the reply from queens still in their cells, signaling their presence with lower-pitched sounds. If two queens emerge at once, it’s a fight to the death—only one will rule the hive.

This fascinating behavior highlights the incredible communication and social structure of honeybees. So, when you hear those quacks and pipes, remember: it’s not just noise—it’s the sound of a royal rumble!

In Arizona's scorching heat, honey bees have developed a fascinating way to stay cool while staying active! 🐝 According to a study led by Jordan Glass, who earned his PhD from Arizona State University (ASU), these bees adjust their wingbeats to conserve energy and avoid overheating, even while carrying nectar. Just like taking longer strides while running, this adaptation helps bees keep foraging no matter how hot it gets. 🌞 Glass's research, conducted at ASU's Tempe campus, highlights the incredible resilience of these little survivors. Happy !! 🐝🐝

🐝 As we celebrate today honey bees, we also recognize their contribution to our everyday lives and our ecosystem 🌎—they are responsible for more than 1/3 of the food we eat so it’s vital to continue to protect this critical species for future generations.

🐝 We want to thank our fellow beekeepers—whose hard work ensures we have healthy bees to pollinate crops.

🇺🇸🐝 Did you know America has almost 3.8 million honeybee colonies? That’s the highest number ever recorded! According to the Washington Post, we’ve added nearly a million colonies in the past five years, making honeybees the fastest-growing livestock segment since 2007! 🌍🌺

Much of this growth is driven by small-scale beekeepers, especially in Texas, thanks to new tax incentives. However, this doesn’t mean we’ve solved all our challenges, like colony collapse disorder. Discover how Texas led the bee boom, the role of California’s almond orchards in pollination, and why this might not be great news for native pollinators. 🧼🐝 Have you ever wondered how honeybees stay so clean? Fact: Honeybees are excellent at grooming! They use their legs to clean dirt, parasites, and fungi from their bodies, including special antennae cleaners essential for communication and picking up sounds. Plus, bees often help each other stay clean, boosting colony health.

🐝 Ever wondered why beekeepers use smokers? It’s all about keeping the hive calm & safe! 🌸🍯 When bees smell smoke, they think the hive might be in danger and fill up on honey, which makes them less defensive. Plus, smoke masks their alarm pheromones, helping to maintain a peaceful environment.

Safety tip: Use controlled puffs and always place your smoker on a non-flammable surface when not in use. This keeps both you and your bees happy and sting-free! 🐝💛

Have you ever seen a honey bee packing red pollen? 🌺 One flower that might be the source is the stunning rock purslane (Calandrinia grandiflora), a drought-tolerant succulent with neon pink blooms. Other contenders include henbit (Lamium amplexicaule) and horse chestnut (Aesulus hippocastanum).
