Meet Diesel. He is a 9 year old, 175lb Saint Bernard. We see him every month for his medical needs and nail trimming. He is always very excieted to see us when we get there, barking and running around. Then, after he is done he eats his toes nails and rolls on the ground! We love this gentle giant, and his goofy ways. He is much bigger in person than he appears on the photos.

Just a few little helpful tips, with the temperature being so high recently. It is easier for animals to get overheated in this weather, but also they can burn their paw pads on the hot pavement as well. A good rule to follow is to place your bare palm on the pavement and if it’s too hot for you, it’s too hot for them. Our brachycephalic dogs (smooch faces such as Pugs, Boston terriers, French and English Bulldogs) already have shortened air ways and this weather can be even more trying on them. Please use caution this summer to prevent this from happening.

It saddens us to come to this decision, especially with a few other clinics having issues, but we have decided to stop taking on new clients in all areas we service at this time. We are hoping this will change after the summer months. As we strive to help as many people as possible, we are just completely overwhelmed at this time. It has been close to two years since we last had to do this and while it does sadden us, we must do what is right for our existing clients as well as our staff. There has recently been some confusion about exams. We try to work closely with all the hospitals in the area as several of our clients are also clients at other clinics. However, for you to be an active current client each hospital must do their own exams. This is how your patient remains established with the practice. WV state law requires a yearly examination with the practice. If this is not the case, we cannot see you for technician appointments or give you any form of medications. For example, if you were just seen last week at a different practice and need a nail trim, but we have not seen you since 2022, you are not a current active client of ours and therefore you need an exam for us to come and do the nail trim. Recently we have had an influx of clients giving their pets medications without speaking to a veterinary clinic prior to doing so. As a remind, please never give your pets Tylenol (acetaminophen), or Motrin (ibuprofen) as these drugs are toxic and can cause some very serious side effects that they cannot recover from. However, there is another medication clients have been giving that we do not recommend giving. That is Aspirin. There are several reasons why we do not recommend this. The biggest one is it can cause stomach ulceration, which can rupture. It can also damage other organs as well. Another issue if you give Aspirin is that we cannot give proper medications for what is happening. There is a 7 day wash out period that needs to occur before we can give the other medications. That means 7 more days of unnecessary discomfort. For more information see the article below.

We have been asked a lot recently about doing a rabies clinic. We are happy to announce that we will doing a rabies clinic on April 27th between 10 am and 2 pm. We will be at Bentley’s Specialty Pet Food LLC. Located in Hedgesville. It will be first come first serve. We will be doing Rabies and Microchipping at a discounted rate. See flier for details. It’s hard to believe today we celebrate 5 years of being open. It is certainly a joyous occasion. We have most certainly had our ups and downs since the beginning, but we can say with 100% certainty we are proud of where we are today. To say we have over 8000 patients for this tiny one doctor practice speaks volumes. Thank you to all our amazing clients, staff and of course, Dr. Cleveland for making this possible.

Is your pet dealing with osteoarthritis (OA)? Animals are very adaptive to hiding any signs of pain, as this is a sign of weakness. Therefore, when they are showing signs, they are usually already in a fair amount of pain. It has been shown that 90% of cats over the age of 12 will have OA, which can be found on radiographs. This is nearly twice what is seen in a canine. OA is a disease process that should not be ignored. Our goal is to keep our furry friends with us as long as possible, but also the most comfortable they can be. We are happy to announce we are starting to carry monthly injections for OA. Solenisa is for felines, while Librela is for canines. We have 2 cases of the Solenisa where our clients noticed a difference within days. One feline went from hardly moving, to running around in her house again. Another positive is these injections have not been found to have any drug interaction issues. Recently we heard on the local radio about a "new" upper respiratory virus that is starting to make canines ill. This has been heard by a number of clients and we have been asked about this. It has been talked about with several veterinary staff over the country, and they have not stated on these broadcasts if these canines have been vaccinated with the standard respiratory vaccines. This would be the Canine Influenza Vaccine and Canine Bordetella Vaccine. Normally we encourage these vaccines to our frequent boards and grooming animals as they are airborne and can spread easily. We have already posted about the outbreak of Canine Influenza in the Northern Panhandle of the state and had suggested everyone get their dogs vaccinated for that to eliminate an issue before it starts. We are now going to be highly recommending both the Bordetella and the Canine Influenza vaccines to all canines. Whether they leave your house or not, we highly encourage you to set up these appointments. Even if you are not our clients, we recommend you contact your current veterinary office and set that up as soon as possible.
