Rural Animal Rescue Effort (RARE) is a 501 (c) 3 Non-Profit organization dedicated to helping find rescue, fosters and adopters for animals in rural shelters and pounds, both “no-kill” and “high-kill”. Although we are beginning our efforts in the west and middle region of Tennessee, we plan on growing our efforts to other areas and states as our organization and support for our cause grows. In th
e interim, we will focus on the shelters and pounds that we are currently helping and continue to network animals in need across the country via social platforms, including facebook, instagram pet adoption sites, etc. In addition to networking with other non-profit organizations, including rescues, RARE also looks for foster care and adopters for the animals in need and raises donations for veterinary care, including but not limited to, vaccines, heartworm tests, heartworm preventative, and spays and neuters. For those who are not active in the animal rescue world, there are tens of thousands of companion animals, mainly dogs and cats, killed every single day across the United States. Although there are animals in need everywhere across the country, rural areas seem to have the worst cases of companion animal overpopulation and abandonment for a plethora of reasons. Almost all of the animals, that sit in rural shelters/pounds or are more commonly euthanized due to the lack of space, time and money it takes to care for them, are highly adoptable and friendly with children and other animals. We are asking that you help us give them their chance at the life they deserve. It takes time to accomplish change, but every stride in the right direction is worth taking. Y’all, we are dying laughing at these photos of Crowley on a pizza date with his fosters! They said he was the perfect gentleman on their outing and only had one spit bubble when admiring the pizza (see second photo!). He also was very social and charmed everyone who met him!
We are still re-living the memories from this weekend! We want to thank for hosting us, as it was such an amazing event and we got some puppies already on adoption trials and others going later this week! We had the best time and enjoyed meeting our new friends at and, as always, we couldn’t get enough of their collab with ! We also want to thank all of the amazing volunteers and transports who came out and loved on our pups and helped the event run so seamlessly, as well as our awesome fosters! It was just the best day and we hope we can do it again soon. 💙

Looking for a smaller dog to be your new best friend?! RARE has several! We have Chihuahua mixes, a Beagle, and a couple of Pocket Pits!
Jimmy is a 2-year-old Chihuahua mix! He is a lover and does great with other dogs and cats.
Yara is also a Chihuahua mix, and although she can be a bit shy at first, she quickly warms up to people and wants nothing more than to snuggle and be loved on.
Milly is a 8-mont-old Beagle who weighs 14lbs and is almost fully grown! Although she needs to be an only pet, she is the only pet you’ll ever need! She has a dynamic personality and just wants to be someone’s best friend.
Cocoa Pebbles is a Pocket Pit! She’s a petite girl at 36lbs fully grown. She’s a gentle soul who adores humans… and Yara! If you’re looking for a dynamic duo, these two would love to be adopted together!
We also have two puppies who are likely Pittie/Chihuahua mix and will be Pocket Pits too and won’t get very large! Phoenix and Hawk have coats that look like Catahoula Leopard dogs and have the most amazing personalities to match! They are currently in foster with other dogs and cats and get along amazingly with them!

We first met Oriole through a chain link fence at a rural shelter that is not open to the public nor offers adoptions. Despite being in less-than-ideal conditions, his smile and happiness were evident and we knew we wanted to give him a chance at a happily-ever-after. 💙
Oriole is a stunning petite Pibble mix, approximately 1 year old, and weighs 45lbs fully grown, so he’s a great medium size! His contagious smile and body-shaking tail wags are very endearing and he loves to be hugged and kissed by his fosters! Not to mention, he’s always dressed for the occasion in his handsome tuxedo-like coat!
Oriole is a social butterfly who adores people and animals alike! Despite his playful nature, he’s respectful towards the feline friends in his foster home. He loves people and would do well as an only dog or with canine siblings! He enjoys engaging in playtime and wrestling with other dogs, making him a good match for a social, friendly female dog seeking a brother to share adventures with. He is also great with kids, but would do best with kids over the age of 8, as they would have matching energy levels!

Looking for a loyal and energetic companion to join your family? Meet Balzey, the lovable Lab mix who is eagerly waiting for his forever home. At around 2-3 years old and weighing a sturdy 55 lbs, Balzey is the perfect size to be your new best friend. Balzey is one of the lucky pups we met in Cleveland, TX while in Houston for a rescue conference back in August. He immediately stole our hearts and he will steal yours too.
He absolutely adores playtime, especially when it involves a game of fetch. While Balzey is undeniably enthusiastic about playing with toys, he also has a deep affection for people. He thrives on human connection and cherishes every moment spent with his favorite humans. Balzey has shown positive interactions with other dogs, but he's more of a "people dog" than a "dog's dog."
When it comes to training, Balzey is a quick learner. He's already crate trained and house trained, making him a well-behaved and reliable companion. With his intelligence and eagerness to please, he'll be an excellent candidate for further training and learning new tricks.

We met Beza last week at a rural municipal shelter. Seeing her broke our hearts, as this tiny, sweet baby stared at us from behind a large chain link fence with her stuffed bear next to her. The sign on her pen read "Young puppy, female" with the words "super sweet" underlined. And we totally concur! This puppy is the epitome of sweetness, cuddliness, and charm. With a gentle demeanor and a heart full of love, Beza is the perfect companion for anyone seeking a loyal furry friend. Her foster reports that she does great in her crate and is always up for a cozy nap in bed with her fosters. Beza's chill personality makes her a joy to be around, whether you're relaxing at home or embarking on adventures together. She's a pro in the car and gets along famously with other dogs, making her an ideal addition to any loving home.

RARE Featured Adoptable of the Week: Bluey💙
We first met Bluey when we visited a rural shelter that was closed to the public and does not offer adoptions. He had made it onto their euthanasia list and was running out of time. Thanks to an amazing foster, we were able to pull Bluey and he has flourished in his foster home!
Bluey is a Husky/Lab/Heeler mix, approximately 1 1/2-2 years old, and weighs 56 lbs. This sweet pup is a cuddle enthusiast and a playtime expert. He adores spending time with other dogs and has a blast running around with his furry friends. Bluey is a well-mannered boy who is both crate trained and house trained and does great on a leash! While Claire Bear enjoys the company of other dogs during playtime, she does have a tendency to resource guard her people, food, toys, and bones, especially when she's on the couch. For this reason, it's best if she's the only dog in the home, unless her adopter is willing to work on muzzle training to ensure everyone's safety and well-being.
Claire Bear is a cuddle aficionado who adores snuggling on the couch with her favorite humans. When she plays, her entire body wags with excitement, but she doesn't require lengthy runs or intense exercise sessions.

Hi I'm Cairo! As a puppy I was dumped in a shelter with 3 of my siblings. We grew up in the shelter but still learned to love attention and snuggles. I'm in need of a new place to live because I'm not in an ideal situation, I'm at a foster that can't keep me and I'm here with my buddy, another RARE dog, Amigo! I'm about 60 lbs, around a year old and I think I'm a Lab mix of some sort.

This sight broke our hearts at one of our shelter visits on Thursday. This sweet little girl, who is only a few months old, was alone in a pen with just her stuffed bear to comfort her because she was dumped at the shelter by people who no longer wanted her. 💔
When we got to our first stop, during our walkthrough before leading a protocol training, we saw a solo kitten that was so sweet we knew we couldn’t leave her behind. Right after, we saw the Pit puppy and another young female Beagle who also caught our attention, so we made a plan to come back for them.
When we arrived at the second shelter, we found more animals that were in desperate need of our help. If we had gotten there even one day earlier, we could have saved another handful of dogs from euthanasia, but unfortunately we were too late and in these rural shelters with no space, we aren’t always notified or have the funding that would help us help save these animals.
So, needless to say, this story has some successes and some heartbreak. Our original plan was just 6 dogs, but we came back with 10 dogs and 6 cats (1 adult and 5 kittens). All of the animals in this post came back with us and are in need of a foster, foster-to-adopt, or to be adopted right away. We are already bursting at the seams and we are also running dangerously low on funds.
Our summer fundraiser is still ongoing and thanks to your generosity, we have reached a little over 1/3 of our $7,500 goal! Any donation we receive will go directly to supporting these new rescues and the ones already in our care. There are several ways you can help! Please consider contributing to our fundraiser so RARE can continue to help more animals like these. Every donation, big or small, makes a significant impact. The first picture we ever saw of Emilia, she was looking scared and sad at the camera. Her big brown eyes were asking for help. She was a stray who a Good Samaritan took in and immediately reached out to us. We could tell she was a special girl, so we said yes! Emilia is a sweet and social girl who loves to go on walks, and walks well on a leash. She is house and crate trained, and while she’s downright adorable, she does have her quirks. She’s a bit possessive of her people, space, and food, so she’d thrive best in a home with an assertive dog who can guide her or with a laid-back companion who doesn’t mind. It’s crucial that her furry friend be non-reactive. Additionally, Emilia dislikes being crated and will vocalize her displeasure, so she’s seeking a home where crating isn’t necessary, ideally with someone who works from home or has an outdoor space/mud room/laundry room for her to explore while they’re away.

Honey was found wandering the streets of Texas, and even though we don’t normally intake animals from other states, we knew we couldn’t leave her behind.

RARE was in Texas for a conference when we met Honey. Her sad, golden eyes spoke to us and we feared for her if she was left out on the streets. So, we brought her back with us. We quickly found out she was heartworm positive. We were able to get her treatment and she is now heartworm free and ready to start her next chapter!

Honey is as sweet as her name. This Shar Pei / Pit mix weighs 48 lbs fully grown at 2.5 years old. She loves to play outside, but also knows how to relax indoors. She does wonderfully in a crate and is house trained as well. Her favorite activities include going out with her humans to patios, breweries, and beyond!

Earlier this month, Bonnie and Bambi had days to live. They found themselves on a shelter’s euthanasia list due to severe overcrowding. The shelter reached out to us, desperate for help, and thanks to fosters, we were able to save them and give them a second chance! Both are doing amazingly in our program and are ready for their forever homes! Bonnie is incredibly affectionate and adores being around people, making her an ideal companion for any family. Meet Bean! Bean is an energetic and affectionate Malinois/Shepherd mix with a heart as big as her boundless enthusiasm and athleticism. At just over a year old, she’s a high-energy girl who thrives on play and exercise. She often thinks she’s a lap dog and loves snuggling. She is excelling in her foster home, working on leash training and other commands and has shown that she is very intelligent. Bean has a high prey drive, so she’s best suited for a home without small animals, but she’s getting along with her canine foster siblings (although they don’t always want to play with her as she’s so high energy). She’s clean in her crate, enjoys training, and needs a strong handler who can keep up with her working breed instincts. While she’s great with preteens and would excel in activities like scent work or fastcat, her size and strength mean she’s not the best match for families with small children. Part of our mission revolves around rural outreach. This often looks like visiting rural shelters and providing medical assistance to their dogs. If we have fosters, we’re able to save some, as some of these shelters do not offer adoptions and are not open to the public. This means that for a lot of these dogs, rescues are their only ways out. Meet Phoenix, Hawk, and Wren, a gorgeous Catahoula Leopard Hound/Pit/Chihuahua mix trio who are ready to find their forever homes! (They can be adopted together, but would do great in separate forever homes!) We first saw these beautiful pups when we were sent a picture of them sitting in a box in a shelter’s driveway. They had been dumped, and the shelter was already bursting at the seams. So they called us! These babies weigh around 5 lbs currently, but we believe they will grow up to be the size of “pocket pits” - around 40-45 lbs. All three love to play, meet new friends, and nap! They get along great with other dogs and kids. These three would be a perfect addition with their love for play and companionship, and they are quick learners with a heart of gold. When helping rescue dogs in rural communities, we come across some dogs that live in terrible conditions. In the state of Tennessee we are not able to do anything to help these dogs unless the owners give us permission. 🥺 - ‼️ Sometimes we get lucky and the owners are willing to let us help. In this case are getting all of the dogs and cats at this house medical attention (including spay/neuter, vaccines etc.) and finding a foster for one of the dogs. But we don't have space at our rescue so to take him out of this situation we NEED to find a foster home to get him into our program. ‼️ - The only dog they are willing to let us find a foster right now is a shy, skinny dog that we have named Roux. 💙 Roux is heartworm positive, which is deadly if left untreated, so we are his only hope to getting healthy and eventually finding his forever home. He is living in this outdoor enclosure, the ground is all mud. - To get him into our program and get the help he needs, we need someone to foster him. 🚨🏠🚨 - When you foster with us we provide ALL the necessary supplies. This includes food, collar, leash, crate, medical expenses and anything else the dog needs. Fostering Saves Lives. Thanks to an amazing foster, we were able to accept Numa into RARE! Now she can just sit back, relax, and enjoy being a puppy as she waits for her forever home. We still have a need for more fosters, as there are around 5-6 other dogs we have been contacted about like Numa who are looking for a rescue to facilitate them finding a forever where they will be loved and cherished, but we can’t accept them without fosters.
