Hurricane Preparedness for Pet Owners & Pet Businesses
In the event of a natural disaster like Hurricane Milton, having a plan for yourself & your pets is essential. Proper preparation can ensure safety during a crisis. Here’s a streamlined checklist & guide to keep your pets safe before, during, & after the hurricane.
Pre-Disaster Checklist
1. Identification & Documentation:
- Take a clear photo with your pet. Keep hard & digital copies.
- Mark your pet’s collar with your name, phone number, & address.
- Confirm your pet’s microchip information is current.
- Store important documents, including vaccination records & microchip info, in waterproof bags. Bring these documents with you.
2. Pet Supplies:
- Store a 7-day supply of pet food & medication in waterproof containers.
- Bring lightweight, easy-to-clean water & food bowls.
- Pack medications in labeled ziplock bags.
- Create a go-bag with toys, blankets, & a familiar item for comfort.
3. Safety Equipment:
- Flashlights & extra batteries.
- Portable phone chargers, fully charged before the storm.
- Lower screen brightness to save battery life & close unnecessary apps.
- If in a flood-prone area, ensure your dog wears a life jacket.
- Muzzles for anxious or aggressive dogs.
- Crate or pet carrier for secure transport during evacuation.
4. Household Preparations:
- Fill all water containers, including baths, with freshwater.
- Avoid using refrigerators & dishwashers as waterproof storage; chest freezers are more secure.
- Mark your home with “ # # Pets Inside” including the number & species of pets for emergency responders.
- Hang a white sheet at the street-side window to request assistance, listing the number of people & pets.
During the Storm:
1. Safety Precautions:
- Keep pets indoors; do not leave them outside or in kennels.
- Avoid attics unless there's a clear escape route.
- Wear protective gear & have floating devices ready for floodwaters.
- Do not cross streams deeper than 12 inches without safety measures, as floodwaters can be hazardous.
2. Water Safety:
- Use bottled or filtered water during & after the storm; tap water may be contaminated.
- Avoid stepping in floodwater due to potential contamination.
- Wear protective footwear when navigating flooded areas.
After the Storm:
1. Assessing Safety:
- Do not allow pets to roam freely until you check for hazards like downed power lines or sharp objects.
- Keep pets leashed or crated while surveying the area.
2. Contacting Resources:
- If insured, contact SRP24 for disaster response assistance.
- Reach out to local pet emergency shelters & veterinary services for post-disaster health risks.
3. Behavioral Concerns:
- Watch for signs of stress in your pets post-storm, such as aggression or anxiety. Provide comfort & normalcy.
- Consult a behavior specialist if significant changes occur, as disasters can have lasting emotional effects on animals.
Remain calm…your pets are observant of your energy. 🙏🏼
