๐ŸŽ๐ŸŒฒ๐ŸŽ…Puppy time!!๐ŸŽ๐ŸŒฒ๐ŸŽ…IVY is still a puppy and learning all about grooming. Since she is noise-sensitive, we are desensitizing her to the blowdryer in a very slow way and with distance. She is not loving it, but we are making the best of it.
This particular blowdryer is not very loud and we use it before we use any louder ones. You may notice we are holding her, we are prioritizing caring and gentle touch in her session. She also had a bath and we worked in a very specific way to avoid spooking her with water. Habituating a noise-sensitive dog is a little bit like walking on eggshells, we must be extra-careful.

It is very very important to have some exposure to new things, but not to push her to an uncomfortable place. And she needs to know at all times that she is safe.๐Ÿ’›

Only 50% of dogs in the wild leave their families, the rest stays with their group for a lifetime.

The ones that do leave, stay with their family until after a year old. Sometimes 13 months. This is not random, since this age coincides with adolescent brain development in a dog. They need other dogs to know what it's like to be a dog.

They need to see other adult dogs behave, and model behavior for them. Socialization is a basic dog need.

When we take an 8 week old puppy out of their family and deprive him of his immediate family and social contact to be a pet, we need to be able to provide all of the necessary tools and social contacts to ensure there will be no deficiencies in that development. Sleep, nutrition, evacuation, safety, as well as mental and physical activities. Social interaction is one of them too and very critical.

Placing an 8 week old puppy in a crate, isolated, and asking him not to cry is not realistic. The puppy will cry and get desperate, he does not understand why he is alone, he is afraid and confused. The puppy needs our comfort, our touch and our care desperately, and only after several months of habituation and very patient and caring desensitization training, can a puppy be expected to be 'ok' with being left alone in a crate or alone, period.

Dogs need their family to develop. What happens if a momma dog does not lick her puppies enough during the first weeks of life?
As in humans, who experience issues in the absence of mom, the puppy will be more prone to behavioral issues such as fear, anxiety, or lack of confidence.

A puppy that is left alone without the support and comfort needed will also face these developmental issues later in life. So before getting a puppy, we need to consider if we will be able to provide the time needed for that puppy to develop into a happy dog.

If we have to work for 8+ hours, we can hire a dog walker, pet sitter or recruit family members to help.
Ultimately, perhaps is best to consider an older 2 yr dog that is more independent and can cope with being alone or with a playmate better if we are unable to meet these basic needs.

Advanced Skills๐Ÿ’›Forest Rottie walk!๐Ÿ’› No matter how heavy or big dogs are, we can walk them on a loose leash and enjoy our time together. Loose Leash walking is a skill that one can acquire, it is like swimming or riding a bike. It takes some practice to master the leash handling and not get tangled, but if you are considering learning, start in a flat open space. This will help you control the leash better and gain handling skills before you venture into a smaller space or a more crowded space like a suburban area.
If your dog pulls, this is a great skill to never worry about pulling again.

WHY is loose leash walking so important?

I have been asked this so many times, as it is evident that loose leash walking is an often neglected skill. We often see dogs in the street complying with 'heel', martingales that pull their necks where the guardian walks, even head halters that pull their entire head in the desired direction to make them walk with us.

We are in this robotic, obsessive race to see whose dog complies better, follows nicer, and does not pull. We show others: 'Oh look how he follows me and avoids pulling me'!

Pulling is an absolute no-no and often blamed on the dog as a 'non well trained' or 'misbehaved' dog. I often see guardians embarassed if their dog pulls on a leash, and often signaling the dog needing more training.

But what if I told you that WE humans are the ones needing the training? Yes, the loose leash walking skill. What if there was a simple skill that could allow us to walk any dog YES ANY DOG for life, successfully and without pulling after a couple of times?

Sounds like a dream.

Allow me to pull the rug from underneath you, and flip your world upside down for a moment. What if in reality, we are conditioned to believe dogs have no needs while they walk, but in reality they pull to meet those needs?

You see, while you walk in that suburban concrete sidewalk and worry about Fido not getting its paws dirty, eating p**p, or delaying you to get back home for your favorite show...(or simply not falling on your face) Fido is actually needing to get those paws right in the mud, grass, and natural soil because it is a big stress relief. Fido needs to smell that particular flower, and it is taking an annoyingly long minute of time because there is a specific compound in that flower that he wants to sniff to help him rebalance his gut microbiome. There is also a little green leaf he wants to chew for that, oh yes! And he thinks the cat p**p over (cat p**p that canids eat in the wild naturally as part of their diet) there has some specific compounds that may just... You get the picture.

Fido does not understand our timeframes, he is happy to share a walk with you his favorite person and there would be nothing more loving than to respect his tiny little walk and sniffing needs for those full ten minutes.

So here is where our loose leash walking skills come handy. We can share this special time with our dog without push and pull, without tension, without stress, without fear of falling, and we actually start enjoying the walks more.

'Heeling' in this would be inappropriate. Heeling is a structured walk which places enormous attention demands on the dog, and NONE on the human. It is a drill sargent exercise, it increases stress... but we are actually looking for a meditation experience instead that reduces stress. We want a PLEASANT walk for all, don't we?

What if instead of demanding our complete obedience and submission from our beloved dogs through a forceful leash, we instead offer them a caring, safe, and movement-free, discomfort-free experience where they get to be dogs again and explore the world together with us?

This is exactly what loose leash walking skills do for me. Everytime I take dogs out with this technique, and the dogs have never experienced this before they immediately start sniffing, exploring, thinking, and relaxing. They feel free again. They figure out quickly where the 'safety bubble' is, and they can make choices again, be confident again. They do not pull because their needs are met.

Loose leash walking is not as 'sexy' as teaching tricks, or other skills to show off. Loose leash walking is a simple, yet very difficult to master skill and is a LIFE skill.

Some trainers do not teach it because they believe most guardians want a quick fix for the leash pulling. So they default in a martingale to 'control' the dog. 'It worked! He doesn't pull!'

Yes the dog does not pull but now we have created other issues.

Loose leash walking is a small time investment to preserve the integrity of our dog's health (repeated pulling compromises the spine and back carriage over time), their confidence (the inability to make choices compromises not only their agency but also their anxiety) and in many cases there is a clear connection between chronic high cortisol state and reactivity.

A high price to pay.

In puppies and teenagers, since their growth plates are not fixed yet, the pulling generates potential degeneration in the skeleton, fascia, and overcompensation issues. This is why we are seeing so many dogs with torn ACLs, ligament issues and such. In elderly dogs arthritis and other pain issues may be exacerbated.

So if your dog is fearful, shy, lacks confidence, if your dog is nipping, if your dog is elderly, if your dog is a puppy... learn how to walk on a loose leash.

So if your dog is anxious: learn how to walk dogs in a loose leash.

If your dog is reactive: learn how to loose leash walk.

Your dog will be thankful.

Bring him home for the holiday. This big, lovable goofball of a Labrador is about 5-7 years old and he came into our care as a stray. Rocco is a playful, friendly boy who is sure to steal your heart with his irresistible puppy-dog eyes. Rocco's absolute favorite thing in the world is a good game of fetch. He'll chase a tennis ball all day if you let himโ€”and bring it back every time (well, *almost* every time). He also gets along wonderfully with other dogs that he has met here, so he would likely do well with a canine companion that shares his playful energy. https://www.petfinder.com/dog/rocco-id-44214-3114-73648362/va/manassas/prince-william-county-animal-services-center-va331/
