RIP sweet baby. FLY HIGH 💙🐾

CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCBD) – A staffie-mix female dog who made national headlines after surviving an animal cruelty incident nearly ten years ago has passed away, her family announced through social media.

Caitlyn passed away peacefully Sunday after she was diagnosed with an aggressive cancer, according to an Instagram account dedicated to her.

“She was a tremendous blessing and a gift to our family that we cherished and loved every day,” her family wrote. “We remain very proud of the work done on her case and the ongoing work we are involved in related to animal welfare and combatting cruelty.”

“However, as proud as we are of bringing justice to her, what we are proudest of is being her family and having had her in our lives for as long as we did,” the statement continued.

Photos of Catelyn went viral after she was brought into the Charleston Animal Society on May 27, 2015, with electrical tape wrapped around her muzzle.

The tape was wrapped so tightly that her tongue was stuck between her teeth and had turned black. The cruelty led to years of recovery for Catelyn that included multiple surgeries and intense recovery supported by the animal society.

Her story of survival and strength caught national attention and sparked the hashtag , which brought awareness to stories of animals who have suffered abuse worldwide.

Once the legal proceedings were finished, Caitlyn soon found a home with Ted Corvey, the lead prosecutor on her case.

In a video update posted in 2024 by the Charleston Animal Society, Corvey said Caitlyn had become the adoptive mom to two dachshunds and was “very much a vital member” of the Corvey family.

As for her abuser, William Leonard Dodson was sentenced in March 2017 to five years in prison after pleading guilty to ill-treatment of an animal. That sentence was ordered to run concurrently with a 15-year federal weapon sentence.

Georgia awarded almost $2.2 million to prevent deadly wildlife-vehicle crashes
Dec 30, 2024 6:37 pm EST

The U.S. Department of Transportation announced the State of Georgia was awarded nearly $2.2 million in grant funding to help prevent deadly vehicle crashes with wildlife in the state.

The grant award was given to the Georgia Department of Transportation by the U.S. Federal Highway Administration’s Wildlife Crossings Pilot Program “to integrate wildlife-vehicle reduction measures and habitat connectivity goals into transportation project planning and construction.”

Across the United States, federal officials said more than one million wildlife-vehicle collisions happen each year, impacting drivers and wildlife and leading to about 200 human deaths and 26,000 injuries to drivers and their passengers.

“Too many Americans are injured or killed each year in crashes involving cars and wildlife, especially in rural areas – which is why our Department created the first-ever program dedicated to crossings that make roads and highways safer for both humans and wildlife,” U.S. Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg said in a statement. “With funding made possible by the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, the projects moving forward in 16 states will reduce collisions between drivers and wildlife, create places for wildlife to safely move over and under highways, and help preserve American life and property.”

Overall, the crashes lead to what USDOT said was about $10 billion in damages to the public, split between economic costs like losing income, medical costs, property damage and more.

Federal officials said the $2.2 million grant awarded to GDOT will be used to create a wildlife crossing prioritization tool, which will include analysis of wildlife-vehicle collisions, early coordination of habitat connectivity, monitoring of plans for projects and use of wildlife crossing educational materials.

“Safety is FHWA’s top priority, and these roadway safety investments will ensure that motorists and wildlife get to their destinations safely while advancing a safe, efficient transportation system that benefits all road users as well as the environment,” Acting Federal Highway Deputy Administrator Gloria M. Shepherd said.

Fulton County police have identified four suspects charged last month during an animal cruelty investigation at a home in the City of South Fulton.
Fulton County police have identified four suspects in an animal cruelty case.

Three have been arrested while one suspect is still at large.

Authorities say they discovered 20 dogs, nine of which are puppies, in what they described as deplorable conditions at a home off Old Farm Road.

Police say the investigation began after three dogs from the home attacked an 85-year-old neighbor while she was standing at her mailbox.

One of those dogs was shot and killed by police who charged at officers who were serving a warrant at the home.

Please DO NOT BUY any of these.
THROW THEM AWAY if your dog gets one as a gift.
Giving rawhide to a dog is NEVER a good idea.

Many of these so called treats end up with the dog “enjoying” some time in a veterinary surgery over Christmas. The vast majority of these rawhide products and treats come from China.

The chews are made from cattle or horse hides and their journey starts with the hides being soaked in a toxic sodium sulfide to remove the hair and fat. More chemicals are used in order to split the hide into layers which is then washed with hydrogen peroxide to give the white “pure” look and remove the rancid smell.

Now comes the pretty festive colors and the glue to form cute shapes.
On testing, these chews have shown traces of ARSENIC, MERCURY, CHROMIUM and FOMALDEHYDE.

If that wasn’t bad enough, they regularly cause INTESTINAL BLOCKAGES, POISONING from chemical residue and CHOKING.
The chews get slippery when wet and are near impossible to get hold of to save a choking dog.

Save yourself and your dog all the heartache, expense and suffering.
STAY AWAY FROM RAWHIDE!!!

Do not feed bread to ducks and geese.
Bread causes permanent harm to ducks and geese, leading to deformities like “angel wing,” which prevent them from migrating and escaping predators. Please avoid giving them bread.

Instead, opt for healthier options such as cracked corn, peas, mealworms, romaine lettuce, watermelon, or sliced grapes!

Please just don't
Every year the rawhides come out and people who don't understand, buy them for their beloved dogs.
Just don't.

We strive to provide the best for our furry friends, but sometimes what seems like a harmless treat can hide potential dangers. There have been documented cases of dogs with pieces of rawhide lodged in their windpipe, stomach, or intestines, creating choking hazards and an intestinal blockage, gastrointestinal distress, such as vomiting or diarrhea, can occur if rawhide irritates the digestive tract . Since rawhide is a byproduct of leather, some items pose a significant challenge to a dog’s digestive system when it comes to breaking down.

During the manufacturing process, rawhide is often soaked in a cocktail of chemicals to preserve it and enhance its flavor. These chemicals can include formaldehyde or chromium salts, hydrogen peroxide and bleach, which may pose risks to adult dogs and young puppies alike.

Safer alternatives like completely digestible Himalayan yak chews, dehydrated sweet potato chews, or any of the all meat jerky treats would be much better than rawhide.

“North Carolina’s Lake Lure Flowering Bridge and its Rainbow Bridge features a heartwarming tribute to beloved pets, incredible views of Chimney Rock, and a look at over 700 species of plants and flowers that make up the vibrant garden that spans the bridge. What was a decommissioned bridge that once carried traffic between Lake Lure and Chimney Rock has been turned into the “Flowering Bridge” garden that spans the Rocky Broad River. Walking the bridge now takes you through a flowery wonderland that serves as an official Monarch Waystation, but also to a heartwarming place of remembrance for lost pets. The Rainbow Bridge here is a place where visitors leave collars and tags to honor pets of all kinds who have “crossed the Rainbow Bridge”. The Lake Lure Flowering Bridge is a nonprofit managed by a number of caring volunteers, and one of the more peaceful and unique places you’ll find in NC.”

From a local gardener:
This tick has been on display for us to show people for a while. After months in a sealed container without any additional feeding, she laid eggs. This demonstrates how long a tick can remain dormant and how many eggs one female can lay. Remember, ticks become active again in the fall, so continue with preventive measures.
If you encounter a small pile of jelly-like balls in your garden, act immediately! These are tick eggs and they're set to hatch soon.
Either set them on fire or destroy them by soaking in isopropyl alcohol. Be sure to wear gloves if you handle the nest, as it contains hundreds of tick eggs that will hatch in a few weeks. I believe it's important to share this post because tick bites can be dangerous.
Stay safe and informed to protect yourself and your garden from these tiny but dangerous creatures!
